How to use RT628 kids walkie talkies？

    Probably more like 3.5 stars. Have bought 3 boxes of these for a total of 6 units so far to practice with during hiking and beginner prep for potential emergencies (with plans to upgrade later).

    My 7 y/o has a sense of the units' most basic functions. I think these would be most functional for a soludly smart 10 y/o or 12 y/o of average intelligence for kid age starters.

    I had quite a time trying to figure out basic operations, set up, and use parameters. The instructions are not amazing. I found that a lot of information out there on FRS+ radios don't slant towards super beginners. Usually my trusty YTube research ventures pull through, but there is either lots of hazy garbage info or too high-level info. My best advice to search something like "best practices for emergency (FRS) radio / walkie talkie use". Those results should at least give you a sense.

    Decent sound transmission during our practice runs in our suburban neighborhood were between 1500-1750 feet (so just under a 1/3 of a mile). This was with moderate obstructions (park trees, a park pavilion, wooden play structure, and a 3 story brick faced apartment building) and low-to-moderate elevation changes.

    3 walkie units were set to the same channel. 2 of those units were stationed at the park across the street and one went to the apartment property. Voice transmission could be heard within the building in the hallways with moderate clarity, which was pleasantly surprising. The property 'dips down' on a slope so that stories 2 and 3 are at and above street level. From the ground outside with the building completely between the park and the radio, the sound was pretty decent. The park in this instance would be situated at a higher elevation. It has a number of mature trees, but there is a large expanse of open space and undulating ground in the middle for disc golf and running around. The sound was also totally fine while transmitting while standing outside on one of the 2nd story balconies facing the park. I checked and measured the pinpointed distances on the Google satellite map.

    If you're handing these units to unsupervised kids, my suggestion would be to have a plan in place if they overhear voices and/or run into people trying to talk to them on these open radio channels. Like switching to pre-agreed backup channels, having call signs (instead of saying real names), group/team names, and cloak destination/location names. We have a code word for approaching or suspected danger that's in the realm of "cupcake".

    I can't speak to battery life at the moment as we're still in test/practice mode, but do plan on upgrading to lithium batteries or the Retevis rechargeable battery pack in time.

    I purchased these walkie-talkies for communication among children who didn't have phones while skiing. I tested them at Chestnut Mountain Resort, IL, and Alpine Valley Resort, WI. Both resorts have a distance of about 0.4 miles (2220 ft) from the bottom to the top of the slope, with a vertical drop of around 500 ft.

    Using these walkie-talkies, voices came through clearly from the bottom to the top of the slope. I was satisfied with the range; if there were no obstructions, the range could extend beyond a mile.

    Despite using them all day with only three AA batteries, the battery gauge decreased by only one bar.

    Children aged 6 and 10 could easily communicate by simply pressing buttons. It's really simple: just push and talk. Even Voice Activation is possible, and I found this feature especially helpful for young children. However, there was a slight delay, and constant responses to surrounding sounds led to battery concerns and unnecessary noise, so I opted to disable it.

    You can push a button to send a call tone other walkie-talkies, which helped me easily locate my child in a crowd by sound.

    There are 22 channels, and you can easily change them. Make sure all walkie-talkies use the same channel. Children might accidentally enter a configuration mode by pressing buttons randomly. With the lock button, you can prevent children from entering a configuration mode to change settings like channels.

    Even with the walkie-talkie in the pocket of a jacket, the voice was effectively transmitted. Children didn't need to remove the walkie-talkie from their jackets, eliminating worries about loss.

    Overall, walkie-talkies proved to be invaluable for communication on the slopes, providing reliable and easy-to-use connectivity for children.

    I first bought a “toy” walkie-talkie at Dollar General thinking my 3 year old would enjoy it. I brought it home, put batteries in it, and tried to use it. It was horrible! I returned it.

    Then I bought this on Amazon because it was the next cheapest walkie-talkie I could find. For $7 more than the Dollar General junk, I got a REAL walkie-talkie that is absolutely amazing!! Not only does my 3 year old love it, but Mom and Dad regularly use it! It works for a huge distance in our farm! And there are so many functions! It makes the Dollar General walkie-talkies an absolute joke! And for $7 more! Hard to believe, but this is a quality product. I would definitely buy again!

    These are legit. They work with great quality and for long distance and all for a super fair price. When I was young you had to drop over 100 bucks for quality walkie talkies so was super excited to try these and see they work amazingly. My 4 year olds tried them a bit, I think they are a little young for these, but whatever, my wife and I play with them and love it and the kids will come around and learn whats good for them
