4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 476 ratings

He's doing what he can to save the Prince Regent's life . . . but can he save his new marriage as well?

Evan Eldridge never meant to be a war hero--he just wanted to fight Napoleon for the future of his country. And he certainly didn't think that saving the life of a peer would mean being made the Earl of Whitelock. But when the life you save is dear to the Prince Regent, things can change in a hurry.

Now Evan has a new title, a manor house in shambles, and a stranger for a bride, all thrust upon him by a grateful ruler. What he doesn't have are all his memories. Traumatized as a result of his wounds and bravery on the battlefield, Evan knows there's something he can't quite remember. It's important, dangerous--and if he doesn't recall it in time, will jeopardize not only his marriage but someone's very life.

Readers who enjoy Julie Klassen, Carolyn Miller, and Kristi Ann Hunter will love diving into this brand-new Regency series filled with suspense, aristocratic struggles, and a firm foundation of faith.

Excellent entertaining in an interesting plot with captivating character building
Saving Prince Regent’s godson on the battle field Evan Eldridge is knighted, given an estate, land and money. Duke’s daughter Diana Seaton is also selected by the Prince Regent to marry the new Earl of Whitelock, wildly against her father’s wishes. The married couple hides serious secrets, but is forced to trust each other when life threatening events occur. The Lost Lieutenant is first installment in the new (Serendipity & Secrets) by Erica Vetsch which is set in London and Berkshire 1813. It’s about War Veteran Evan Eldridge who is knighted for bravery in the Peninsular War. I find this book to be interesting and unusual as it focuses on a male main character. In all similar stories I have read the main character has been female, which makes this a novelty.Main character Evan Eldridge is a traumatized ex sharpshooter. Following the Prince Regent’s gratitude he has to suddenly learn how to be a gentleman and. I like him a lot as he seems a well rounded character with good values who is a believer in God. He is my favorite of this story.Secondary character Diana Seaton is pressured to do her father’s bidding to marry someone chosen by him. She seems assertive and strong despite the way her father treats her.I felt sorry for her trying to deal with an impossible situation. There is some impressive character building in The Lost Lieutenant (Serendipity & Secrets #1) by Erica Vetsch. The characters seem to be built from a combination of the most problematic character traits of the time.Evan suffered memory loss related to events on the battle field. My favorite part of the story was clues to the mystery of what happened. This part of the plot included a surprising development.Plenty of complications prevented Diana and Evan from getting close. Nothing much happened in the way of romance until the second half of the book, which I found in keeping with the development of the plot. It made room for other dramatic elements to remain in the foreground.I enjoyed that some of the spiritual message was conveyed through song (or poem) and that both Evan and Diana prayed for strength throughout the story. The Lost Lieutenant (Serendipity & Secrets #1) by Erica Vetsch is excellent entertaining in an interesting plot with captivating character building and enjoyable, vivid writing. The ending is exciting as well as satisfying and ties up loose ends while still leaving enough to build a plot for the next book. I will eagerly be watching out for the next installment in Serendipity & Secrets Series by Erica Vetsch.Fans of Erica Vetsch will love this new series. Readers of historical romance fiction might enjoy it as well. Similar authors to explore might be Julie Klassen, Carolyn Miller, and Kristi Ann Hunter.Thank you to publisher Kregel Publications and NetGalley for this eARC which gave me the opportunity to share my honest review. My rating: 5 stars / 5Main reason: interesting plot, excellent character building, great writing

Loved every minute of The Lost Lieutenant by Erica Vetsch. It is my first book by this author and I will definitely be reading more by her! I am thrilled to be binge reading this wonderfully engaging story AND The Gentleman Spy back to back!

What an amazing Regency tale. Two people completely at a loss for situations thrust upon them. A war hero Evan Eldridge, is given a title, that comes with a run-down estate, and a bride he felt obligated to marry. Diana Seaton has a marriage foisted upon her and doesn't know if she can trust her new husband. She trades in her cruel father and brother for an unknown husband.

Very engaging story! I could not put it down!

Quotes I enjoyed:
At the moment, he looked at Evan as if you were a stray mongrel sneaking into a pedigree kennel. Which was just how Evan felt.

Upon arriving at his dilapidated estate with his steward and former army friend, "We might as well advance, sir. " followed by the standard army answer "Retreat is not an option."

Nobility had more to do with character than birth. There were many who called themselves Noble because of their family tree, but Evan had nobility stamped all over him because of his character.

All his military said if you ever gave someone the opportunity to best you, you gave them a weapon to use against you. This was what love did to you. Made you vulnerable because the person you loved had enough of your heart to break it. He'd never trusted someone like that before, but now he needed to. Wanted to, even.

I really enjoyed Erica Vetsch's writing. She had some terrific figures of speech and other highly original turns of phrase. Her knowledge of the Regency period was thorough and convincing. There was, however, a certain stereotyped feeling to the development of Evan's character that she could have easily avoided. First he is made an earl, then he goes to the tailor, then he goes to Tattersall's, then to Almack's, yada yada. I just think anyone familiar with the era could weave a less predictable course of events. Also, VERY early in the book, the author starts advocating for a personal relationship with Jesus. I was shocked. I mean, I realize a lot of people really like Christian romance, but this was so heavy-handed. Fortunately she maintained a lighter touch for the rest of the book, although God was mentioned more than 50 times. Very good writing but I confess I will have to think twice about the next book.

This book was just so fantastic, I am struggling for the right words. Evan and Diana were a match made in Royal plots.

I loved the way the characters came together after they were forced together. I loved the revelations of secrets and the way they worked through what came up.

The villains were vile and the heroes extraordinary, I couldn't put this down once I picked it up.

Diana had such strength in the face of some pretty daunting obstacles. She fought for what she believed in and made sacrifices for those she loved. Topics addressed were taboo at the time and showed how little power a woman had.

Evan and Diana grow together through communication and faith, even though there are a couple of blips in that communication that make for a tense moment or two. This story was beautifully written and was a perfect way to start this series.

I am an avid reader, and I love books of all time periods. So I was excited to have the opportunity to review this book. Diana has been groomed her entire life to be a true “lady of the manor”, while Evan as a commoner who happened to save the godson of the Prince Regent – who just happens to also be Diana’s step-brother.

When the Prince Regent declares the two must marry, Diana and Evan have no choice but to follow his directives. But both of them also have secrets they keep from each other. After giving Evan a title and a crumbling home, the Prince Regent ensures the two marry and carry out his plans to revive the property. I loved how the Prince Regent either knowingly or unknowingly thwarted the plans of Diana's father and her brother.

Diana is willing to do whatever it takes to protect her nephew from her father even taking him from her father's home. I loved watching Evan interact with her nephew.. Evan knows he has forgotten something he needs to remember. In the process of renovations, the two realize they can not keep secrets from each other if they want to experience true happiness. They need to trust each other and work together to keep Diana’s nephew safe and help Evan rediscover his lost memories.

I think the Prince Regent is the perfect meddling grandfather-like figure. I would have loved reading more about what he was thinking as he set these two up for marriage. I also adored meeting Evan’s parents. I just wish I could have gotten to know them better. They seemed to be the perfect example of what a country preacher and his wife should be like and act like.

So if you like Regency period novels that deal with nobility, check out this book for yourself.

I received a copy of this book for my fair and honest review.

This was my first Erica Vetsch book but it won’t be the last. I really enjoyed The Lost Lieutenant. The plot moved at a decent pace. The characters brought out all sorts of emotions swinging from love to hate. The main characters are incredibly endearing.
The Lost Lieutenant had a strong message of the effects of mental and physical abuse. The reader gets to see a behind the scenes view of a woman’s thought process after living thru this. But there is also a strong theme of healing and endurance.
I read this book fairly quickly because once I started, I couldn’t put it down. I can’t wait to read the rest of the books in the series.
