Product Description
The downspout rain water collector connects to a vertical downspout and captures 50% of rainwater while debris is directed down the gutter, diverting filtered rainwater into a storage tank or rain barrel, or directly to a garden. As the water travels down the inside walls of the downspout, the rainwater adheres to the walls of the downspout and does not free-fall from the center. The Rainwater Colander installed inside the downspout captures water free of large debris in a 2-inch tall reservoir that has an outlet to attach to a garden hose or cap when not in use. The innovative design of the patented colander automatically diverts rainwater back into the downspout when the rain barrel is full, or a cap is attached.

I decided not to fuss over setting the height of this diverter as the instructions suggested, which is supposed to automatically prevent the rain barrel from overflowing. Instead I added an overflow port neart the top of my rain barrel and ran a hose from that into a drain. I also put a shutoff on the fill line coming from the diverter so I can shut it off if I want to.
The main thing I like about this diverter is that a standard garden hose can be connected from it to the rain barrel, simple and neat. The rain barrel can be closed, with no need for large holes and screens, and no splashing.
It works great. A few tenths of an inch of rain filled a 30 gallon barrel. I've bought a 3 of these diverters now.
Install was super easy, just make sure you deburr the fresh cut gutter edges since it's a close fit. The bracket they shipped with to hold the bottom part doesn't quite fit on the gutter, but it still holds well enough for now.
I'm very happy with how this one turned out, and it was way cheaper than alternative versions.
