Review

Gaydar Nation, a British website, had this to say:

You may remember Paws and Reflect, Neil S. Plakcy's recent co-authored book about the special bond between gay men and their dogs. This is an author who has more than one string to his bow, having already published two books (read our review of his second, Mahu Surfer) that feature his Hawaiian police detective, Kimo Kanapa'aka. Now he's back and the writing is stronger than ever.

Thanks for reading! I’d love to stay in touch with you. Visit my home page at www.mahubooks.com, where you can subscribe to one or more of my newsletters. I hope you'll also consider following me at Goodreads to see what I'm reading, and subscribe to my author page at Facebook where I post news and giveaways.

I've wanted to be an author since I was about sixteen, when a high school assignment on A Separate Peace showed me how powerful writing can be. At the University of Pennsylvania I studied creative writing with Philip Roth and Carlos Fuentes; I went on to receive my MFA from Florida International University.

My first published novel was Mahu, about a Honolulu homicide detective dragged out of the closet during a tough case. I put a lot of myself into Kimo Kanapa'aka, the hero, and yet he’s very much his own character, and much better than I am! He has had a powerful hold on my imagination for many years. I love writing about him and hope to keep doing so for a long time. He’s also the source of my favorite reader question. A few years ago, someone emailed to ask if he was circumcised.

My first reaction was “Man, I’ll bet Stephen King doesn’t get questions like that.” But then, his are probably even weirder. I went online and did some research and discovered that at the time Kimo was born, hospital circumcisions were common. So there you go.

My path to publication was a long and checkered one, as is the case with many authors. My first published stories were magazine erotica, and I still like to keep my hand in (no pun intended) with that kind of writing. But for the most part now I write mystery and romance—all my books seem to have both those elements, though in different proportions.

I began writing the golden retriever mysteries because I spent so much time walking my golden, Samwise (yes, I’m a Tolkien geek). He had so many funny habits and such a strong personality that I just knew I had to write a book that featured a dog like him. (Fortunately, Sam had no habit of finding dead bodies.)

I live in Hollywood, Florida now, with my partner and our golden retrievers, Brody and Griffin.

Some of the stories were redundant! Neil repeated some of the previous stories! But, then, new insights into the stories appear!! I can’t wait to read more!!!

Chock full of entertaining short mysteries following Kimo through the series. One of them, about the twins being born, is included in one of the box sets (Mahu 7-11), too. Most of them have deeper themes, like the books, about being gay, and how it affected people on the islands, or during the Vietnam War/Police Action. The short stories are what I needed right now. 😊

This Mahu book is a little different. Rather than a full novel covering one case we have several short stories focused on cases and also Kimo's life and relationships. Rather than a full symphony the author sits at his instrument and tickles the keys to reveal the grace notes to expand and complete Kimo's world in Hawaii. The stories are short and satisfying. There are some surprises to make the reading more fun.

This is a collection of short stories, featuring Kimo Kanapaka'a, the central character of the Mahu series. These stories fill in time between the novels or represent stories that didn't fit into one of the novels. For regular readers of the Mahu series, it is always a joy to get a Kimo-fix. The stories are always quirky and intriguing. Nothing is ever what it seems. That is what makes the collection fun.

Stories that flesh out some of the holes in between the main novels as well as some new short stories.
This can’t be the end of Detective Kimo Kanapa’aka. The author
MUST give us more!

After reading the previous 12 books, of course I was going to read these stories. They’re not bad, and a couple of them do add interesting depth of Kimo’s and Mike’s characters. I’d rather read some more Mahu mysteries.

Short stories are ever more difficult to write than novels. Unfortunately, Plakcy wanted to include a number of pieces from his Mahu series that didn't fit in books - his intention was good. But I lost interest about a third of the way through the collection and have no interest in picking it up again. His novels merely on character development and by their nature the stories have no room for that.
