Editorial Reviews
Archive release. Recorded in the spring of 2010 and then mysteriously abandoned by Prince before it's release, the statement album Welcome 2 America documents Prince's concerns, hopes, and visions for a shifting society, presciently foreshadowing an era of political division, disinformation, and a renewed fight for racial justice. The album features some of Prince's only studio collaborations with the bassist Tal Wilkenfeld, drummer Chris Coleman, and engineer Jason Agel, with additional contributions from New Power Generation singers Shelby J, LIV Warfield, and Elisa Fiorillo and keyboardist Morris Hayes, who Prince also recruited to co-produce the album.

The music: 3 out of 5
Out of 12 songs, there are probably 3 that are skips. Very few of the songs are radio friendly, with the exception of "Hot Summer" and "Check the Record," but that's ok. You'll still enjoy "Same Page, Different Book," "Born 2 Die," "Stand Up And Be Strong" and others. This album also features some "political" songs, such as "Welcome 2 America." It's interesting to hear Prince's stance on the world issues and why he feared technology.
The album feature real instruments and collaborations. Morris Hayes gets coproducing credit and adds keys to some of the songs, while Elisa Fiorillo, Liv Warfield and Shelby J add vocals. The songs are not overproduced and some sound a little stripped down.
Of note is the evolution of certain Prince songs. "When She Comes" was released in 2015 on the Hit & Run Phase 2 song dump, but sounds better here in its original version and "1000 Light Years from Here" includes melody from later songs, like "Black Muse" and the mix of songs on the unreleased, but publicly leaked "Deliverance" EP.
The packaging: 5 out of 5
So, the Prince Estate, Sony and NPG Records have spared no experience. The deluxe vinyl comes in a foldout book format. The CD and Blu-ray have their own sleeves that fit into one of the foldouts. The D side of the vinyl has picture etching. There is a massive full color booklet telling the story of the album, and includes song lyrics and liner notes. There is also a pull out folder that includes replicated tour items like passes, tickets, set list for a show and a poster. Had this album been released in 2010/2011, it would not have received this kind of treatment.

Prince steps from this plane of existence into Eternity. The Key Master opens The Vault and finds a rare jewel. It is one stone, cut to specifications, and tucked away. The Prince is gone, but his life's work lives on. Eleven years on and the grace and power of Prince continues. If you dug Prince celebrate. If your not a fan, then no foul, no harm.
Great price, on great music, plus it is interrelated; not a collection, nor pastiche. A nice little message in a bottle to a pandemically-challenged Present. I hope that he who was knows how appreciative I am of his gift from another time and place.
"Welcome 2 America" is by far the best 'from the vault' release so far, but that's not saying much. I mean "Piano and a Microphone" was awful, and "Originals" was superfluous. This is literally the first 'newer' album released from the vault. Apparently this was made and shelved in 2010. It plays like a brand new Prince album. It hasn't aged a day.
That being said, after repeatedly listening to the album it is his most political record to date. Nearly every song addressed that state of African American existence in today's America. Some poignant thoughts are put to lyric here. In fact, "Welcome 2 America" is arguably better than many of the albums Prince release between 1996-2016. It's cohesive, coherent, and focused. It is, however, prone to all the things I didn't like about Prince's music beginning with 1996's "Emancipation"--and those are bland r&b sounds/jazz, faceless vocals, uninspired musicianship. There's not much creativity on "Welcome 2 America". The thrust of Prince's ingenuity and innovation dropped off around "The Gold Experience" in 1995. Literally, when he left Warner Bros. the quality of his music took a hit with very few exceptions between 1996-2016. "Welcome 2 America" is one such exception. While not a classic in any sense, and not reaching the dizzying heights of his 80's heyday, it is still a decent unheard work.
As with most Prince albums, there were songs that stood out to me such as the title track, "1000 Light Years From Here", "Hot Summer", "Stand Up and B Strong", "Check the Record", "Yes" and "One Day We Will All B Free". That's half an album's worth of decent material that I'd add to a Prince playlist. The rest? Well enough, but not exactly memorable.
For years the media and fans circulated and built a myth around how much material Prince had in his 'vault' at Paisley Park in Minnesota. So far, I haven't been too impressed. Instead, I've been more impressed with his estate's attention to his remasters such as "1999", "Purple Rain" and "Sign 'O' the Times". Those were all great albums and they've been given the treatment they deserve. In fact, I am hoping that "Dirty Mind", "Controversy", "Around the World in a Day", "Parade", "Lovesexy", "Diamonds & Pearls", "Symbol" and "The Gold Experience" all get the same treatment soon.
Until the next 'vault' release, "Welcome 2 America" will have to tide fans over.

Com toda a certeza ums dos artistas mais talentosos que passou nesse plano.
The album itself is some great experimentation from Prince, don't go in expecting the typical sound of his hit singles...but if you're a Prince fan, you'll enjoy it ! Other than the double LP, CD, AND digital download code...this set includes a bunch of fun little extras : a 12x12" photobook, replica setlist, VIP access pass, ticket...there may be a kitchen sink hidden in there somewhere...
Overall, i'd call this a great value for yourself or the Prince fan in your life.
