On the surface this is what a child will read in this story. BUT Zippo's friend and the narrator is a wheelchair user so in every picture that Zippo is doing something his friend is too. So we see a wheelchair user in the midst of friends and taking part in activities with everyone else as an equal, and on occasion, a leader. We are told that Zippo is amazing but we are encouraged to take the little boy's experiences for granted.
Cleverly written. Expertly illustrated. Great hidden message. Really grasps equality and diversity in a way that many other books should emulate. A book for every child
