5.0 out of 5 stars Portrayal of disability in children's picture books
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 31, 2019
My Amazon page tells me that I ordered this book on 25/03/2108 so it's been a long wait and much anticipated. I was not disappointed. My daughter is an adult with a severe learning disability and a wheelchair user but an ardent lover of picture books. Because of this I collect picture books which portray learning and physical disability in the hope of finding books where she might see herself reflected positively. These books are few and far between. This book goes right to the top of my list. Apart from the fantastic story, the vibrant illustrations and the sense of fun and enjoyment demonstrated throughout, it's refreshing that there is no moralistic or educational tone and that (overused) word 'special' is not mentioned once. I'm so pleased that a wheelchair user at last gets to be a bit naughty, rather than, as often happens, having to provide a lesson or example for other characters. I particularly love the double page spread where Zibbo and the hero are at the front of a line of other children who are all also on wheels, and delighted that the wheelchair user gets to be the leader rather than in the background or bringing up the rear. This is a wonderful book and I only wish I could give it 6 stars because it's in a league of its own. Thank you, Steve Antony!

This book has great illustrations depicting children with different characteristics. Most children should be able to see themselves . Positive and confidence building.

5.0 out of 5 stars An amazing dragon with a perfectly ordinary owner - great message

Vine Customer Review of Free Product( What's this? )
This is a book about a boy and his pet dragon and all the adventures they get up to together with their friends. Sometimes Zippo the dragon gets a bit overexcited but everyone loves him and he and his human friend have a great relationship.

On the surface this is what a child will read in this story. BUT Zippo's friend and the narrator is a wheelchair user so in every picture that Zippo is doing something his friend is too. So we see a wheelchair user in the midst of friends and taking part in activities with everyone else as an equal, and on occasion, a leader. We are told that Zippo is amazing but we are encouraged to take the little boy's experiences for granted.

Cleverly written. Expertly illustrated. Great hidden message. Really grasps equality and diversity in a way that many other books should emulate. A book for every child
