If you are into increasing the quality of your sound/video, start with this. However, if you get this in combination with Audioquest's NRG Edison, prepare yourself for an increase in sound/video that will surprise you and blow your mind. :)
It has good detail, but it's because the Power Quest is anemic, and not supplying full power to my amps.
Dynamics are weak, and it can sound bright.
If you have an integrated amp that lacks detail, this may be a great solution for the price.
If you're running high end tube gear, you need to move up to the AQ Niagara.
Additionally I'd like to proclaim I'm a big AQ fan, all of my cables ( HDMI, RCA, Digital and Power) are AQ products. No AQ hate here what so ever.
The PQ-3 is a very large, well designed, attractive unit. The power outlets grip cord prongs firmly and the plastic base keeps the unit quite stable when in use. I was honestly a tad surprised at how large the unit was but I had ample room for it. Love the look of it.
Electronic units need time to settle in, They do. In fact stated in plain black and white in the Furman Elite-15 PFi user manual is "the unit needs two weeks of use before sounding it's best". So one must never cast an opinion upon first plug in. ( I auditioned the 15-PFi unit a few months ago. )
The PQ-3 is quite dark and muddy sounding at first. I was taken back by the reduction in body and dynamics that I'm accustomed to hearing, but I let that go as unit was brand new and needed time to bloom and come to life.
As the hours passed the sound quality improved somewhat, however it wasn't anywhere near as transparent nor full bodied as the Furman PST-8D.
The PST-8D costs about $125 less than the PQ-3 for those interested.
Perhaps with additional break in time the PQ-3 could have caught up to PST-8D, however I didn't spend $300 to
HOPE that eventually, the PQ-3 MIGHT be as sound as good as the $175 PST-8D.
Filtering wise the PQ and Furman seem to be in the same ball park with the PQ-3 starting down a bit lower on the MHz scale compared to the PST-8D. The PST-8D has "Zero ground" as a feature which the PQ-3 does not.
AQ makes a big deal about "Zero ground" as a key feature on the much more expensive Niagara 1000 unit.
Just food for thought. I'd be lying if I said I knew what that actually meant for enhancing sound quality however it is quite notable to me to have a $999 unit and a $175 unit proclaiming a similar feature.
Sound quality wise the PQ-3 was outclassed by the PST-8D, but the PQ-3 was far better than plugging directly to the wall outlet with no filtering at all.
As far as TV picture quality went, the PQ-3 darkened the overall presentation. So yes, blacks were blacker with the PQ-3, but so was everything else. While gaming with the PQ-3 graphics lost the crispness, vibrancy and overall smooth motion they had with the PST-8D at the helm.
Conclusion, the AQ PQ-3 while cool looking and highly functional, is beaten by the less attractive, less expensive but superb at doing it's job Furman PST-8D.
At least this was the case on my system. As it is written "YMMV" ;)

As a power outlet
As a power outlet, it's great. It is a sturdy piece of hardware, well designed so it doesn't slip around, and quite stable. I love the upright shape, it saves space and is very easy to access the outlets. It can also sit on its side with rubber feet, and has screw mount brackets for a wall or shelf mount.
The outlets are all tight with no wiggle, and without those annoying built-in safety caps a lot of them have no. The outlets are fairly well spaced (30cm prong-to-prong) but your larger power adapters, or those designed at right-angles, could block the neighbouring outlet.
The front has some status lights, not too bright so they won't distract in a dark room.
The back has two USB charging outlets. I wonder if they feature the noise suppressing technology that Audioquest is famous for? That would be a great deal, since their Jitterbug product does just that and costs $75. Audioquest can you answer that for me? I don't have any way of testing it. But at any rate, it's useful to have them because it can potentially clear up two outlets if you are charging by USB.
The back also a coax filter, a reset button, and a power switch. I wish the power switch and reset button were shielded against accidental press, but they are not. Just need to be careful when reaching around the back.
The power cord is captive, thick but still flexible. It is 14AWG and labeled "simple concentric - long grained copper" on it. Not sure what that means but Audioquest is a leader and innovator in power cable design, so I expect it's special. It's about six feet long. I really love that it ends in an offset right-angle plug, absolutely the best design for tight spaces. Thank you Audioquest! It was really easy to plug and unplug, while crawling on hands and knees behind my furniture where my audio equipment is installed.
As a power noise filter
I have a wicked ground loop hum in my office, where I have my secondary stereo system. Some equipment isn't affected at all, but on some equipment it's a constant hiss, hum, and digital gurgling. I tested the Powerquest with the noisy equipment and it didn't suppress anything: all the noise was there, same as before. In contrast, my Hum X device gets rid of 95% of it. Maybe it isn't designed for ground loops.
As an audio enhancer
This is a tricky one: does a power outlet improve your sound? Some people say no, it's impossible, and others swear by it. I bought the Powerquest for my main stereo system (not the office system with the ground loop hum). On a first listen, it sounded about the same as it had before, plugged into a standard office surge protector/power outlet. But after a while, my impression was that the bass was deeper and more responsive, the treble slightly more extended, and the overall sound more realistic and responsive. My amplifier uses a rare push-pull Darlington transistor drive stage, similar to tube amplifiers, and it's always been very dynamic and realistic: I felt it was more so with the Powerquest.
But the differences were subtle and I did not do a lot of A-B testing. Honestly I just like to listen to music and not obsess over my audio equipment. I think the Powerquest made my music sound better. Maybe you will too.
Overall, this is a great power outlet with surge protection and I think it's worth the price for that alone: quality power outlets aren't cheap and this one is really well designed. As a noise filtration device, it didn't help with my ground loop problem at all, and I couldn't tell what else it may have a been doing. As an audio enhancing device, I think it made my music sound better.
Overall, I highly recommend it.
