Let me preface this by saying this is not for beginners. If the extent of your music playing comes from apps on your phone, you might be lost in the beginning. If you're looking for a touch screen with big pretty buttons, this isn't it. I read another review saying the user experience is bad. I think that's absurd. If you're serious about music but on a tight budget, this has an experience you will appreciate. The UI is extremely intuitive and there are a lot of options and settings to fiddle with to get this set up exactly the way you want it.
DAC - This has a great DAC for the price. It's not the most current generation, but at this price point that is to be expected. It does the job and does it well. My FLAC and MP3 sound fantastic pumped through a solid pair of IEM headphones. Blows away other DACs in the next tier down. TI makes a really great DAC!
Sound - Even my lower quality MP3s I've been keeping since the days of Napster sound great. Obviously you can tell the difference in quality when one of the old files pops up on the shuffle, but it doesn't sound grainy or glitchy. My high quality 320kbps files and the few albums I've ripped from CD to FLAC are where this shines. It is absolutely phenomenal to listen to hi res audio on this device. I am really impressed at the sound for the price.
Build - Another review says this device is lacking in build quality. This is an aluminum brick. The buttons are plastic but seem completely solid. The scrolling wheel is textured plastic but feels very sturdy. I had no problems navigating the menus with it. The buttons are all perfectly labeled and make navigating the interface that much easier. The screen is of a decent resolution for this type of device as well.
EQ - This has a very competent 10 band equalizer with lots of presets. Unlike in low-end hi-res players, the equalizer here makes a difference. I've got it set on Rock and it sounds fantastic.
I/O - I've used this device with bluetooth headphones, bluetooth earbuds, a bluetooth stereo, single bluetooth speaker, and my car bluetooth. No connectivity problems at all. I get the best sound out of my wired IEMs, though. Bluetooth is fine, but nothing compares to a decent pair of headphones. You can also connect external devices (I used a generic USB stick connected with a micro-USB OTG cable) and get music from those. I've got a 128GB MicroSD card installed and am listening to this device streaming through an Anker Soundcore about 25 feet away as I type this review. The HiBy Music app works as expected, and streaming from my phone through this is really a simple process IF YOU READ THE INSTRUCTIONS. Haha
Interface - Three themes to choose from..Doesn't do much but change the color scheme. What I LOVE about the interface is that you can access important settings from the now playing screen. Turn on and off bluetooth, display lyrics, show album art (looks great), and access the EQ. The back button does what it says, and the menu button does what it says. There is literally no issue with the UI for someone who understands file structure or has ever used a computer. There are two other settings menus accessed from the home screen. You can customize nearly everything.
Battery - I fully charged this after receiving. Took about 1.5 hours to fully charge. As of this moment, I've listened to music either through headphones or streaming through bluetooth for about sixteen hours. Mostly streaming to bluetooth. Battery bar shown in the photos is showing about 50%. In real world use, this device might need to be charged once a week, especially if you're mainly listening through wired headphones.
Overall impressions: THIS is the MP3 player I've been looking for. It's inexpensive, built like a truck, looks good, and has more settings than I can shake a stick at. I am extremely pleased with my purchase.

Two weeks in with 1,000+ files dropped onto it:
Pros:
- Beautiful sound quality for what it's worth. At the price point that it's at, it expectedly has better sound quality than the nuggets of cheap.
- Beautiful design. The thing in the pictures is actually what you get surprisingly. The sleek etching, color, screen size and *all* are what you get, which I can definitely appreciate for how much I payed.
- Hardware is sleek and easy to use. The three yellow/bronze themes are pretty and give this thing a unique feel among other soulless nuggets. It feels like it's from the future, and the future is badass. 😎
Cons:
- Randomly goes up in pitch when bluetooth is too far away. This one is WEIRD and spooked me a bit the first time it happened. When I'm at work, I usually set it down in the corner and do whatever I'm doing. However the moment I walk too far away, the thing disconnects and reconnects like usual, except the pitch and speed go up, making me power off/on which is needlessly annoying. It's straight out of a cartoon for how weird it is.
- Very rarely powers off for no reason. I'll be setting my favorite song up when all of a sudden I get flashed by the bootup screen and have to set it up again. This has only happened about three times however.
- Minor nitpick, but you cannot select shuffle AND repeat. What I mean by this is that shuffling songs and repeating songs are completely different settings. On my old nuggets, having the option to combine the two was nice, as I could listen to something completely new and unexpected when the current tune was getting old.
Overall, it's held up very well and seems like it will last a good amount of time. I'm praying it survives at least a year, which would make this a better alternative than a Spotify membership. The problems it already has however are slightly annoying, yet can be avoided if you get used to the thing. I wasn't asking for much out of the box, but with the price point, I was hoping it would be less... y'know, randomly pitching itself up-y.
Very good for what it's worth, and I'm betting I'm the only one with said problems. I can live with it, and love it for what it is.
Good nugget, recommend if you're feeling lucky.

Until now, I was using a 16gb Ipod loaded with MP3 files for space and convenience, but I knew that I wasn't getting the most from the music. It sounded OK, especially when paired with my Beoplay H6 2nd gen earphones, but it was still compressed and a little flat. The F20 can play pretty much any format you load on to the SD card with no issues at all. It can drive my over ear cans no problem, and it can easily drive my IEMs, although I would recommend that you use something with significantly higher impedance than the minimum recommendation of 8ohms. My cans are 32 and the IEMs are 30. Anything lower than that and you might find that there's a bit of noise, especially if they're particularly sensitive.
Loading and playing music is very straightforward, although annoyingly the player doesn't offer folder support, or allow you to Play All Songs by an artist the way the Ipod does. That's something I would like Surfans to address when they next update the firmware. Making playlists is easy too. I use M3u Dropper, and have made about 20 lists with very little effort.
It is important that you put the lists into the main folder, and don't nest them. The software will only look in the folder the M3u is in to find the songs. If you delete a song, or move it, the player will not load your playlist, and you will need to make a new one.
Battery life is very good. I've had mine play continuously for 3 hours with only 25% loss. It's not as good if you use bluetooth, but that's to be expected. If you have bought this, then I would assume that you're not using BT anyway. There's little point in buying a lossless player and then not using wired earphones.
So, it's a basic but very competent player that lacks few features that could easily be added. It's not going to give you the full audiophile experience, especially if you're not using good 'phones, but the cost of the high end stuff is getting harder to justify when you can buy this for around £100.
