Product Description

The GEL-Venture 5 shoe provides great fit and everyday comfort, with Rearfoot gel cushioning technology and a rugged outsole ideal for a variety of terrains.

In 1949, Mr. Kihachiro Onitsuka began his athletic footwear company (Onitsuka Co., Ltd.) by manufacturing basketball shoes out of his living room in Kobe, Japan. He chose the name ASICS for his company in 1977, based on a famous Latin phrase "Anima Sana In Corpore Sano," which, when translated, expresses the ancient ideal of "A Sound Mind in a Sound Body." Taking the acronym of this phrase, ASICS was founded on the belief that the best way to create a healthy and happy lifestyle is to promote total health and fitness. Today, ASICS offers a full line of performance-driven athletic shoes and technical active sports apparel and accessories dedicated to bringing harmony to the body and soul.

Customers say

Customers like the comfort, fit, appearance, durability and value of the shoes. For example, they mention that the foot support and overall comfort are very good, the sizing was totally normal, and accommodates their orthotics well. They also like the conservative color and that they look new again. That said, some complain about the tread being worn down after 2.5 years. That being said, they are reliable and good value for money.

Good color options, easy to wear/true fit, well priced at around $50 + have held up nicely with normal use.
Like most Asics sneakers at the $50 ish price point, we got these for casual use a few times a week, and don't put them through the ringer as they are not made for / meant for heavy duty use or work etc. I think some of the issues people have may be from putting them through too vigorous use (other than running) but as long as you understand these are running sneakers and not work shoes or heavy duty shoes, you should get a good amount of use from them. (Note - we don't use these for actually running :) so can't speak to wear with that. For day to day normal use though they have held up wonderfully, lots of walking and light things like moving furniture now and then etc.LOOK: Great colors (we have a few but the favorites are the blue/neon ones that I posted photos of below! A little different and cool looking but not too crazy or loud.) Nicely made, no weird stitching, even, definitely happy with Asic quality at the $50 ish price point.FIT: Easy on/off and a very comfortable fit even from the start before they broke in (which did not take too long) True to size with a nice slight bit of room for a thicker sock like a Thorlo or a work sock and a replacement insole that's usually thicker than the stock one. If you are between sizes I would go up one and not down, though.QUALITY: We for years thought of Asics as middle of the line, so so quality wise brand -- but these and the few others we have gotten seem to be quite well made and have held up great even at the year + mark. Our previous pair only started to really break down at 2+ years - pretty good in this price range. No noticeable wear or issues other than normal wear/tear -- will update as usual if this does change.PRICE: Paid $45 during a sale. The normal price seems to be $55-$65 and still not a bad deal.Overall - cool color options, easy to wear/true fit, nicely priced at around $50 and have held up nicely with normal use.

My first pair of Asics and I'm sold. I switched from New Balance because their quality has tanked. These shoes are light, durable, breathable, and provide great support. I got the black ones and they look quite good too. Every shoe these days has too be shiny or reflective and tacky but these are the black mean looking sneakers I was looking for. I've worn them on the treadmill at the gym, longs walks on pavement, and long hikes on the Appalachian trail for a couple months and they still looks and feel new. I spray them off with a hose when they're muddy and let them dry in the sun. They're always dry in a couple hours and still feel soft. The pull strap on the back is heavy duty and very convenient. I usually have to use inserts in my New Balances, and these Asics are compatible, but I haven't needed one. The included insert works fine for me. No foot pain even after a 12 hour day of standing in one place at work.

The sizing was totally normal. I wear a 10.5 in everything except Converse All Stars so that's the size I got and they fit perfectly. I have a wider foot but I got the normal width and they fit me well so I think they run a bit wide. I like them so much, and the price is so good, that I ordered a backup pair.

I've been happily running in various ASICS running shoes for over 20 years, like the DS-1000 & 2000, Gel-Kahana, and DS-Trainer (my fave, but too expensive for my needs these days). I'm an 8-1/2 in street shoes but have always sized a half size up with my ASICS shoes, to a 9-D, and the fit has usually been perfect. The only exceptions, interestingly my two most recent pairs of ASICS, were the Gel-Kahana, which was just a tad too large, and the DS-1000, which was a bit too narrow.

It was time for a new pair and I'd read good things about the Gel-Venture, so I ordered a pair of 9-Ds from Amazon (after trying them on in a local store to make sure the size was right). But when I got them, I could immediately tell that they were too narrow, and they actually hurt one foot that's slightly bigger than the other. I thought that maybe my feet had swelled due to the heat wave we've been having here, and waited a few more days to try them again, but no difference. Same thing several days later.

So I'm going to be sending them back for a refund. Pity, as I really liked the shoes otherwise, and I do mostly trail running these days. However, when I saw that the same model, but in a wider 9-4E, had just jumped down in price here, I decided to order those and try them out. I get them in a couple of days. Hopefully, they'll fit much better and I'll keep them. Sadly, they're not available in my preferred color scheme, but I guess you can't have everything!

I'll post an update when I get the new pair and try them on. Bottom line, though, some ASICS shoes appear to run even smaller and/or narrower than they usually do. Perhaps my feet have just gotten bigger. But I had the same exact problem with a pair of DS-1000's that I bought last year, so who knows.

UPDATE: I ended up ordering a wide pair and they turned out to be too wide. And by the time they arrived, the first pair was now fitting me just fine. I think I know what the problem was. It's been incredibly hot and humid here in the northeast all summer, and I found out that such weather can make feet swell. That was almost certainly the case with me. Once it cooled down a bit and I tried them on again, they fit perfectly. I returned the second, wide pair, and tried running in the original, standard width pair.

They had slightly less arch support than I'm used to, but then they're listed as Neutral, not Stability shoes, so that makes sense. It took a little getting used to, but now I like running in them, on paved and unpaved surfaces (grass, trails, dirt paths, etc.) I wouldn't call these hard-core trail shoes, for long trail runs on poorly maintained trails with roots, rocks, streams, etc. But for casual off-road running they're more than adequate. Plus they're light and cushiony enough for paved surface running. They're also good for walking around.

Ironically, they're actually a bit too large sometimes, when I'm wearing very thin socks, so I insert an old pair of orthotics to make them fit properly. With thicker socks I don't need the orthotics. I'm wondering how they'll perform when it starts to get cooler, over fallen leaves, snow, ice, etc., when traction is important. But, overall, I like them so far.

I’ve been buying ASICS for years and found that the toe box in these specific runners are much tighter than usual for a supposedly WIDE fit.
Going to be a long and painful break in period.
Wore them once and put them on hold. Ouch!!
