Addressing key questions of photographic practice, the book illuminates the creative methods, strategies, and editing processes behind some of the world’s most iconic images.

Featured are 139 contact sheets from sixty- nine photographers, as well as zoom-in details, selected photographs, press cards, notebooks, and spreads from contemporary publications including Life magazine and Picture Post. Further insight into each contact sheet is provided by texts written by the photographers themselves or by experts chosen by the members’ estates. Many of the acknowledged greats of photography are featured, including Henri Cartier- Bresson, Elliott Erwitt, and Inge Morath, as well as such members of Magnum’s latest generation as Jonas Bendiksen, Alessandra Sanguinetti, and Alec Soth. The contact sheets cover over seventy years of history, from Robert Capa’s Normandy landings and the Paris riots of 1968 via Bruno Barbey, to images of Che Geuvara by René Burri, Malcolm X by Eve Arnold, and portraits of classic New Yorkers by Bruce Gilden.

This is a fantastic book. What a great job of the editor. It's so fascinating to look at those contact
sheet and see how the not choosen pictures looked and also all not perfect exposed pictures.And to read about some of those famous pictures from the Magnum photographer
To develop an contactsheet and then sitting down with a markerpen and an enlarging glass to choose which pictures you wanted to enlarge was one of the most joyful moments in the "old days" before the digital world.
Buy this book and you will have many hours to join and get inspired .

Photography is a hobby of mine and this book was full of insights. You do not have to have a background in film to understand what happens in a contact sheet. You just need to see enough of them to learn how to read them. When I worked at a fashion studio, we were happy to get one keeper in a 36 exposure roll. What you don't see in the other 35 shots is often helpful in understanding what steps led to that $$$ keeper. You know your process from reviewing what you shoot, and then to see it from what other people have shot helps you understand the process is different for all of us, but, yet, the visual path of other photographers is readable. You'll flip the pages and read the details and you will "get it" and be happy you digested this brick of a book. I mean, that is, if you visually want to get better.

A brilliant book I would recommend any aspiring photographer or photojournalist to have in their collection as it talks about not just the trials or work of the great ones before them, but it shows them how the photographers of the past had worked.

I particularly love this book as it shows how much the final printed out shoot differs from the ones shown in the contact sheet indicating that some degree of printing skills was involved to make the photo work very well. As well as that exposure is not always spot on when they took the photos in the hectic situation.

I also love the stories associated with each of the winning shots from each contact sheet taken over the years. Keep in mind, this isn't just for film enthusiast (but it helps to have a better understanding of the work presented here) as later chapters shows digital contact sheet as well.

The book is unique. I was very encouraged to see that even the best in world shoot a lot of film to get a single best shot. Often enough, a single shot only was a winner. Other lessons from the best of the best include determination, awareness, love for all living things and for beauty itself.

Honestly, I was shocked at the print quality for the price of $45. I’ve bought photo books that cost 2x-3x as much that less photos in worse quality. It’s also just absolutely massive at over 500 pages with something interesting on almost every page. I’m a bit worried about the longevity of the binding as it’s a lot of strain and weight on a paperback but I imagine if I’m nice with it it will last a good while. If you want it as a book that you take to your grave, I’d go with the hardcover. But for a student like me, the paperback is a real value proposition.

This book represents a unique and extraordinary insight into the photojournalistic photographic process. Many famous images are represented here, but what makes them particularly valuable is you get to see the contact sheets as well as the stories behind the pictures. I know of no other book on photography that comes as close to this. Some examples that spring to mind are Ansel Adams - Making 40 Photographs, Michael Freeman's photo books, and most recently, those of Scott Kelby, all of which give you insights into technique and the photographer's mind. But none of these tap into the extraordinary resources captured in this book. My approach to reading and absorbing this substantial volume has been to look at the contact sheets first, to understand the material captured, and then see how your choices relate to those of the photographer. This in itself is a valuable learning experience, not diminished in any way by the clues contained on the contact sheet in the form of notations. This is one book that should be on the bookshelf of every serious student of photography.
