What Melania wants, Melania gets.

The former director of special events at
Vogue and producer of nine legendary Met Galas, Stephanie Winston Wolkoff met Melania Knauss in 2003 and had a front row seat to the transformation of Donald Trump’s then girlfriend from a rough-cut gem to a precious diamond. As their friendship deepened over lunches at Manhattan hot spots, black-tie parties, and giggle sessions in the penthouse at Trump Tower, Wolkoff watched the newest Mrs. Trump raise her son, Barron, and manage her highly scrutinized marriage.

After Trump won the 2016 election, Wolkoff was recruited to help produce the 58th Presidential Inauguration and to become the First Lady’s trusted advisor. Melania put Wolkoff in charge of hiring her staff, organizing her events, helping her write speeches, and creating her debut initiatives. Then it all fell apart when she was made the scapegoat for inauguration finance irregularities. Melania could have defended her innocent friend and confidant, but she stood by her man, knowing full well who was really to blame. The betrayal nearly destroyed Wolkoff.

In this candid and emotional memoir, Stephanie Winston Wolkoff takes you into Trump Tower and the White House to tell the funny, thrilling, and heartbreaking story of her intimate friendship with one of the most famous women in the world, a woman few people truly understand.

How did Melania react to the
Access Hollywood tape and her husband’s affair with Stormy Daniels? Does she get along well with Ivanka? Why did she wear that jacket with “I really don’t care, do u?” printed on the back? Is Melania happy being First Lady? And what really happened with the inauguration’s funding of $107 million? Wolkoff has some ideas...

Review

"...an 'I was betrayed!' book to beat all."
USA Today

“Winston Wolkoff's book is unique in the landscape of books about the Trumps, as the first insider's look at the first lady's private world.”
The Washington Post

“The third of the big unauthorized Melania explainers, after
Free, Melania by Kate Bennet in 2019 and The Art of Her Deal by Mary Jordan, which was published earlier this year, Melania & Me may also be the most revealing.”
The New York Times

"Wolkoff’s book is remarkable both for its intimacy and for the sheer volume of receipts it contains. It’s also the first real look at what’s under Melania Trump’s hood—which, in Wolkoff’s telling, is surprisingly callous and ugly."
Vanity Fair's The Hive

"epic scream of a tell-all"
New York Times Book Review

"...scathing tell-all."
—People.com

"The first lady's former aide shares juicy tales of backbiting, inauguration chaos, and why Melania wouldn't use Michelle Obama's bathroom."
—Vice New

I read it in one day.... fascinating insight
This is a very well written and engaging book. So many books have been written contemporaneously about the Trumps that it leaves almost nothing for historians to uncover in the future. The history is being written in real time - with lots of documentation and evidence. What's different about this one is that is one of the few books written about Trumpworld by a woman who was a close family friend for 14 years. Friend or not, she was expendable. As is everyone in Trumpworld. These people are about self preservation. What is poignant about this book is how the author, Stephanie Winston Wolkoff, humanizes a First Lady who is a person few people know anything about. Ultimately their friendship and it's demise is like a Shakespearian tragedy. It *is* a tragedy on so many levels. What is sad to consider is how easily Melania Trump was willing to allow a friend to be thrown under the bus to preserve the Trump family. When Donald Trump is in a prison jumpsuit in a cell between Harvey Weinstein and Bill Cosby, Melania might need a friend or two, but I can't imagine who will be there. Not Stephanie.Ultimately, this is a book about politics, friendships and what it means to care about someone so much that you lose your own sense of self preservation. I highly recommend it. I learned a lot.

While reading this book, I was constantly thinking of friends I wanted to share bits and pieces with. It brought to mind the pure fun of female friendships, along with the unpleasant aspects of ranking systems and status that sometimes lurk in the background (think "mean girls"), set in fashionable NYC locations. The author was honest and open, had clearly given her heart fully to a friendship that was never truly reciprocal, and does a good job telling her side of the story. At times it reminded me of listening to a friend talk about an abusive relationship, or one in which she was not nearly as important to the object of her affection as he was to her. It's basically the same story as one in which a smart, pretty high school girl who lacks confidence does homework for a handsome football player who feeds her crumbs of encouragement, then dumps her and takes the head cheerleader to the prom. Of course it's worse, because to complete the analogy, the couple would need to get drunk and cause a colossal car accident, flee the scene, then pin the wreck on the smart, pretty girl. So yeah, it's that kind of story, but all grown up. The author treats us to an inside look at working for Vogue, planning spectacular NYC events, and, later on, the machinations of the Trump transition team and Whitehouse interpersonal politics. Some reviews complain that she's bragging by listing her accomplishments and celebrity connections, but to me it seemed more like she was just defending herself. She wanted those who might judge her to know her qualifications for the job she held and money she was paid, hoping we would see that she has value. She did, at times, seem to get bogged down in the details of meetings and time tables and who talked to whom about what during the inauguration planning, but her pain at being erroneously portrayed in the media was so raw and evident, it's easy to understand, and forgive, her need to tell the whole story.
Many times it was hard to understand why she continued the "friendship" with Melania. She addresses this over and over, talking about her excitement about what they could accomplish together for children and our country, and fears that Melania was being treated unfairly by White House staff, other Trumps, and the press. Still, Melania's extreme selfishness and lack of interest in anyone's needs but her own were abundantly clear, and Stephanie allowed her own health, comfort, marriage and children to rest lower on her priority list than Melania's whims. If you've read Michael Cohen's book, Disloyal, you will recognize a similar pattern. Cohen was so enthralled by Donald Trump's aura that he committed horrible acts to remain in the inner circle, causing his wife and children considerable pain the whole time, and eventually costing him everything. A key difference is that Cohen admits he knew many of the things he was doing for Trump were despicable, yet his loyalty or need for approval overrode his conscience, whereas Stephanie truly believed she was working for the greater good, and protecting her friend. Melania comes across as a pale version of Donald Trump himself, and their marriage makes perfect sense. Both lack empathy, while abounding in entitlement and selfishness. Donald's need for power and constant attention amplify both his flaws and his talents, creating a cultish vortex, where he must control everyone and everything. Melania is content to let someone else drive, in fact she insists they do, as long as the vehicle is luxurious and the driver caters to her every whim and is grateful for the privilege. Hers is a quiet control, but it is absolute.
Overall, anyone who has ever been in a relationship where they were undervalued will likely find this book relatable and thought provoking, regardless of their politics. The voice is honest and the pain is raw. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it, and I wish the author well.

First, I'd like to say that this was a very interesting book. At times, it read like a thriller and I couldn't wait until bedtime when I got to read another chapter.

By the end of the book, however, I was more impressed with Melania's character than with the author's. What became clear to me was that the author was a social climber and had been her entire adult life. She used Melania, not the other way around. She used Melania because Melania was a big leap up that social ladder, not because of a true friendship with Melania. That is why Stephanie allowed the lop-sided friendship to continue for so many years. She was getting fame and power as her reward for putting up with Melania's occasional lack of effort to maintain the friendship.

In the end, it was Melania who showed genuine friendship, by trying to continue the friendship after the media "disaster" that caused Stephanie to appear in a bad light. A true friend to a POTUS and FLOTUS would be willing to fall on their sword (to a point) to protect the reputation of the White House. Several of the Trumps' employees and friends had done so, and were richly rewarded by the Trumps. Stephanie was clearly not that loyal friend. Stephanie was only interested in being Melania's friend as long as it made Stephanie look good and as long as it gave Stephanie power and social status.

By the end of the book, it was clear to me that Melania was a person of true character and Stephanie was a wannabe star who fell apart when her self-perceived reputation was damaged. I think she needs to grow up and take full responsibility for HER true motives in the relationship with Melania.

Right from the beginning of this book, irony abounds. The author actually dedicated the book: To Melania. it is ironic because if even 80% of this book is accurate, Melania will not care about what the author has to say about her, let alone feel any emotion concerning the depth of Wolkoff’s friendship and loyalty to a person who apparently never cared about her. – anyone who was a friend and/or worked for her. And I mean worked for her, Melania did almost nothing.

Wolkoff took copious notes during their relationship and never tossed out their texts, which were replete with Melania telling her she loved her with added emojis. Wolkoff, despite her affluent life, is a hard-working, charitable woman, and mother of three children and an adoring husband, whom she says is a great dancer – loved that part. Wolkoff worked very hard to become the great advisor, director and professional who was able to create and organize big events. She has a valid, impressive resume.

Wolkoff became a convert to Trumpland. The night of the election, she was very happy for Melania and the Trumps. Up to that time, the author supported Melania’s rise to First Lady and advised of her personal and national responsibilities. She counseled her and was sincere in her support. She wanted Melania to be the “best,” sound familiar?

They became friends or at least Wolkoff thought they were. They always said they loved each other as many close girl friends express... Melania cared about her son, possibly Donald, since she is so much like him, her parents and sister. At one point, Melania asked her to help her sister obtain an O-1 visa which is granted to non-Americans who have achieved an extraordinary achievement or ability that would benefit our country. The author did not know her sister but wrote a recommendation for Ines. Ines was granted the visa but Stephanie Wolkoff never received a thank you. As an American citizen and referencing Trump’s penchant against immigrants, I do not approve of Wolkoff’s help in obtaining a visa for someone she did not know. But apparently, she would do anything for Melania.

Everything came crashing down when Stephanie was expelled from the Trump kingdom. Apparently, there were serious problems concerning the finances of the inauguration. Melania could have assuaged any culpability directed at her, but she didn’t. Stephanie begged Melania to just explain everything. She didn’t. Their relationship was all but over. Our author was devastated and needed legal representation. She was betrayed and then began to tape pertinent conversations of Melania regarding the questionable usage of substantial inaugural money. We may hear Melania discussing this money - STAY TUNED.

Wolkoff can support conversations, texts, notes, events, etc. She is meticulous; after all she is an event planner. Many readers may find the references to Ivanka and her relationship to Melania very interesting. Personally, I am still waiting for Melania to do something for our country. Almost all First Ladies had an active goal: literacy, obesity in children, women’s rights are a few. Apparently, Melania does not want to be bothered. Wolkoff finally understood why Melania remains with Donald, she is just like him.

This is one of the best books written about the Trumps. I devoured it in 2 days. Stephanie Winston Wolkoff certainly has writing chops. I always thought Melania was nicer than the rest of the Trumps. Whoah, was I wrong. She is just as souless as her husband. This was not a tell-all. This was a book that had to be written--the author had to defend herself. She was worried all along about others overcharging during the Inauguration--that much for a stage to be built? The Trump Hotel isn't donating space? More than twice as much money was raised as other Inaugurations. Whose pockets were lined as the money vanished? Not Wolkoff's, but she was the fall-guy. I think they targeted her early on. I found myself getting a bit frustrated with Wolkoff as the friendship with Melania proceeded because there were so many red flags. Her friends telling her to RUN! The blood, sweat and tears put into the Inauguration, only to be told to go sit on the grass at the ceremoney. The Holocaust tour where she wanted to light a candle for her grandparents who survived the Holocaust. Melania knew about them, but never called her over. Melania treated her so-called friend worse than dirt, but Wolkoff stuck around and even kept in touch and sending emojis. Even after Melania didn't come to her defense when accused of stealing $126 million. Melania could have cleared her name but just said, "Talk to your lawyer." I wanted to shake Wolkoff. Tell Melania she is a piece of doodoo! "You are the worst friend ever!" The Trumps get away with everything. You find out from this book all about the Be Best agenda--and how it was just a shell of a program. Nothing like Michelle Obama's fitness movement and the White House gardens. Melania just doesn't care about anything except her facials. At the end of the book, I was glad that Michael Cohen lit a fire under Wolkoff, and told her to get the truth out there. I hope this Inauguration fraud comes to light and whoever is responsible goes to jail. Congrats on writing this book. Job well done.

I initially was reluctant to purchase another tell-all book about this horribly dysfunctional president and his family by someone who at some point was part of their inner circle. But this is a very autgentic, fair, heartfelt, honest and ethical report which should be read by anyone even considering keeping the Trumps in office for another term.

Read this as fiction soap opera entertainment on how to master the art of bitching . Main characters - a fictional first lady of a respected world leading country whose husband the leader outbitches all as the number one butch bitch on twitter. His "camelot" wannabe first lady is master of her own wardrobe - styles her inaugeration look on Jackie O - but leaves out the hat and ends up in a monochrome two piece with a big collar and updo - ending up more Tipi Hedren from the Birds in look than Jackie O. The Camelot wannabe wants to be a traditional first lady supporting her husband but is annoyed it takes up so much of her "me" time. In one episode she is sent to the border to "put a softer face" on one of her husbands contoversial policies - only goes to outdo her wicked stepdaughter who it appears is always trying to upstage step mama. She who is in charge of her wardrobe choses a jacket (green - the Hedran Birds costume was green too -is there a hidden horror message here) - whatever - the jacket has a slogan - " I really don't care Do you ". She who is in charge of her wardrobe wears this slogan jacket to annoy the liberal media to stay on the right side of the butch bitch who pays her "to be in charge of her wardrobe". He's happy ( the wardrobe is safe) she's happy - never mind the public humiliations where he pays for his bonks - just not with IT - the camelot wannabe who is in charge of her wardrobe. The wannabe thinks she has upstaged the wicked stepdaughter and the media in one and laughing emoji dance around her brain. Enter stage left - Steffo - the wicked stepdaughters plant - who has to issue a press release. Steffo - mindful of her precarious job situation - issues a press release - It's only a jacket" PURE GENIUS - Steffo - you go girl!!! The best BITCH SHADE line of all time. Steffo gets out of the situation - brilliant -the camelot wannabe is referred to by her husband as it - so Steffo composes her Bitch Shade line "IT" (the clothes horse - isn't a clothes horse) IT is 'only' a jacket. That has to be the best bitch line ever. STEFFO FOR PRESIDENT -can't wait for the twitter feed. AND she who is in charge of her wardrobe still doesn't understand what an own goal the jacket. STEFFO AND THE WICKED STEPDAUGHTER wet themselves laughing. Serves she who is in charge of her wardrobe right for deliberately obscuring the princess at the inaugeration. HANDBAGS AT DAWN - BIBLES IN BOTH.
The Princess -1 /The Wannabe -0 /STEFFO 10.
Just as well this is fiction and bears no resemblance to anyone in public life. Great entertaining read - laughed my ass off at the bitching. Can't wait for the series The Crown to finish and someone to make a series with all the main players in this fictional camelot BE BEST BITCH could be the title.
