Pros: When you first receive the unit it is almost reasonable for the cost, 2 tuners, clear picture, no inoperable bugs and fairly easy programming.
Cons: 30 days after you receive the unit (and you can’t return it), the usable software is taken from you, the software YOU paid for! It is disabled and a lower grade software is activated. That’s right; they steel back your software and hold it for ransom!
They say it’s all about the guide so, they stop the 14 day guide but still allow you to receive a 24 hour guide instead. The guide service cost them nothing and no reason to stop it other than to extort more money from you, otherwise why would they pay for your 24 hr guide?
So, if you want that expensive unit you paid for, you must pay their ransom month after month for life! The lesser software includes a manual program setting feature because they fixed it so you can no longer use the one button programming from the guide.
They also removed the wifi feature so you can’t access Tablo from you FireStick or something for convenience, just because they felt like it! - It adds no cost to them.
They remove all these features just so you will pay their ransom; removing the 14 day guide wasn’t enough to get people to pay.
And finally, you end up with a $40 unit similar to all those cheaper models. The software has seemed to become unstable since the original software theft; The recordings are often broken up into several files which is blamed on poor reception. (My reception is immaculate; with an outdoor antenna and an antenna amp.) Very seldom a few digital flakes appear on screen but I never lose the picture even in a storm!
When the recordings break up, it’s only once or twice and then it just stops recording and you lose your show. Also, the actions are much slower and the GUI freezes up constantly and there is no power switch to reset so you just wait and wait for recovery or you dig down there for the plug!
If their unscrupulous business model is not illegal, it should be! There could be a class-action suit coming.
So if you don’t mind the extortion and are willing to pay, then this is the OTA unit for you!
The original was when I first purchased (April 30, 2021), and the “Update” being recently (Nov 27, 2021) — So I’ve had about 7 months (of actual [die HARD👷♂️] experience and evidence) of how this thing/product works.
Update (Nov 27):
As you will see (from my original post [below], I had HIGH hopes, of a Cut-The-Cord, Over-the-Air [OTA] solution).
Out of all the OTA products, I [initially] found that the Tablo was the superior product.
BUT, it is only recently [Oct/Nov 2021] that I found some MAJOR bugs… 🐞 within the Tablo product and platform.
About a month ago, I had my first problem, where the Tablo would [regularly] “Reset” (intermittently) and would reboot a number of times. This was AFTER a firmware update 😳🤔
This wasn’t major (just a “minor” annoyance 😡🤬).
Then (2nd) the cable connector on the back became VERY “Loose.” — which the Tablo company DID quickly fix (with a replacement unit).
Then (3rd) after I received the replacement unit, it would “freeze” me out, of some menus (???), where I couldn’t check/change the network settings, or even “reset” the unit. — I then did a Master Reset. — which afterwards, the unit would not recognize the the [past/prior] recordings.
I then Master Reset (again), which at that [this] time it “freezes,” at the Set-Up stage (and just “Loops”, over and over).
I am now in the process of contacting the company [again] to repair or replace the [new] unit.
In my opinion (from my 7 month experience), this product is NOT fully ready (or stable) — it seems [more like] a “Beta” to me.
As of now, I will give it ONE-MORE-SHOT, and then go back to my non-DVR world.
So overall, Users/Consumers BEWARE!!!😡🚨🚨⚠️🚨⚠️🚨⚠️
Original Post (read, below).
Coming from an environment where I had NO Cable, and just “standard” OTA (Over-The-Air), I am ECSTATIC about this product.
BUT, that doesn’t mean that this is “Perfect” (and needs MAJOR work!)
Pros:
1) It does EXACTLY what it claims. So it records OTA signals, and at a very good resolution BTW (using the less compressed [MPEG2] Technology). This depends though, whether the broadcast is at 720 or 1080 (480 has some MAJOR issues [see the Con]).
2) So you NEED to have an [Extra] Hard Drive, as an Attachment, in order to “Record” [Store] Videos. I just use an Old [spare] drive I had laying around. I did have to buy a [separate] USB drive enclosure (from here, on Amazon). — The Hard Drive formatting worked FLAWLESSLY (for me). Even though they use a “tricky” [older] formatting (called Ext4 [which is UNIX/Linux World]), so you can’t readily access the Drive contents (unless you get special Windows or Mac software, to mount the drive (which I did 😁🤫)).
3) The GUI (interface) is pretty straightforward, and simple to learn/figure out (I didn’t need the manual, much).
4) The “Size” of this box is really AMAZING (I am surprised, it can do so....Much, for such a Small size).
Cons:
1) On 480 resolution the TV image is “SQUEEZED” (inward). Most modern Android boxes have a (Basic) image adjustment [option], to STRETCH out the picture, and even most Modern TV’s 📺 [again] do this AUTOMATICALLY — (Maker: could you PLEASE update this?!?)
2) With the HMDI model they DON’T give the option to get/buy the “Lifetime” subscription (MADNESS!!😡🤬), only the Monthly, or Yearly. — (WHY?!?)
3) There is a [slight] 2 to 4 second DELAY when you switch/change channels. I believe this is due to the “buffering” feature, which stores 20-30 seconds of TV show’s (which is nice and annoying, all at the same time).
Overall, I would say that I really Like 👍 a majority of this products benefits & features (I would say, about 70-80%)
But there is still a need of around 20% improvement (as per the “Cons” [above]).
I got this Box (over the other products, like the “Lite” and or the “Quad”) because I wanted access to the MPEG files (for obvious reasons 😉👍).
The other Tablo box’s use a “weird” streaming format (HLS) where you can’t readily download these recorded files.
But I hear this HLS is REALLY GOOD, if you wish to “stream,” to MANY devices.
(REMEMBER: You MUST have/buy the [Extra] external HARD DRIVE, in order to RECORD your TV 📺 programs). — I hear the More Expensive [“Quad”] model allows you to insert/install this, Internally.
So, overall, I would [mostly] recommend this product — Again, it is better than NOTHING!
Having had Comcast/DirectTV, and other Media “Robber Barons” (for YEARS), this product is a REFRESHING way, to “Cut-The-Cord.”😉👍 (although the monthly $5, for this, does “sting,” a Wee Bit😨😰).
