-ASUS lights flash all the time when closed, wasting power and you have to open the ASUS app to turn them off which tries to get you to sign up for something
I play Path of Exile, which can be resource intensive occasionally. This hasn't handled it like a champ, but done fairly well. I haven't tried anything graphically intense yet, but it should do fine there.
Now on to the specific laptop: It has aluminum and plastic construction, but I believe it is all thick nice PBT plastic. The interior material is some kind of fiberglass or smooth matte finish plastic that feels thick and high quality - completely smooth to the touch but matte color finish not glossy. When combined with the aluminum lid and internals and a couple plates on the bottom, I would rate its physical build quality a solid 8/10, and that is easily the worst thing about it. It only gets better from here. You will be amazed what you get at this price from a laptop. I am matching things you can do with a mid range gaming desktop. In terms of ports there's a USB A and C with the power, ethernet and HDMI on the back with 2 more USB A ports and the headphone jack on the left side, leaving the right side with no ports. It also lacks a webcam which is slightly annoying but again that is worth every other benefit.
In terms of the internals, there are 2 m.2 slots and 2 RAM slots. Wifi card upgradable. It comes with 16gb of DDR4 3200 mhz RAM which is nice standard RAM and plenty enough for normal multitasking and gaming. I may upgrade to a faster 32GB kit in the future as the other specs are much more impressive. It only has a 512GB NVME drive included but it can accept up to 8TB of NVME storage if upgraded and it is PCIE gen 4 so it is blazing fast even for an SSD. The display is a matte bezel free 165 Hz 1440p 1MS response time display, probably nicer than your monitor at home. Probably nicer than your TV too, even if its 4K it won't have this refresh rate or color. The vivid setting for videos on windows 11 on this display makes every color pop and I almost prefer it to the identical monitor I just bought for my desktop, an MSI 32 inch 165hz 1440p curved model with shiny finish. It does have higher pixel density being just 15 inches and that is something to consider when looking and comparing this system to its desktop PC competition. I would say the display looks as crisp as my Dell 24 inch 4k display to be honest, it's the nicest display I have in the lineup now.
The rest of the specs just get better. On top of the upgradeability and the amazing display it has the best GPU and CPU combo on the market for its generation, especially considering price. The Ryzen 9 5980HX can compete very well with the i9 12900HK and generally outperforms it, although the next gen DDR5 and 13th gen intel might change things a bit it seems. But, this is still one of the top 5 laptop CPUs on the market, and debatably top 3 (i9 13900HK, R9 6900H, R9 5980 HX are the top 3 laptop cpus on most apps and benches for mobile CPUs) in my mind. It is just one generation old but this new gen did not bring much necessity for gamers on the AMD side. DDR5 RAM would have been nice like I mentioned but this came out more towards the beginning of the Ryzen 5000 release, not any time recently. The GPU is the best or tied for the best on the market as well depending on if you like gaming or creativity apps more. The 6800M's guaranteed 12GB of V RAM is much better for things like photoshop and high res gaming like 1440p or 4k compared to the main 8gb model of the 3080 mobile GPU. Overall the 6800M wins in about half of the gaming benchmarks compared to the normal 3080 8gb, and does considerably better with tasks like mining bitcoin, photoshop, video editing, and hardware acceleration for other programs. I have always been an AMD fan and I also love Asus products so I have been waiting for a laptop like this to come out for a long time and have been waiting a long time to receive one as well. It is everything I hoped for! If you want anything close to being able to say its actually better than this laptop, it would need at LEAST 32GB of DDR5, an i9 13900HK and an Nvidia 3080 16GB mobile. This laptop would still be able to trade blow and do certain things better than that laptop as well, because AMD focuses on different things. So generally, the actual equivalent laptops for this one with Intel/Nvidia are almost never found for under $2000+.
And if all that was not enough, the red shoulder is a removable colored piece that can be changed to chrome or black, but I like the red - it of course represents AMD to me. The keyboard is full RGB and a nice quality to it but I would just plug in a mechanical or bring a bluetooth one anyways. It is not a mechanical laptop keyboard in any way. There are also RGB lighting accents on the bottom front of the laptop in strips and the lid has LEDs on it as well. It also comes with a YEAR of Xbox live game pass, which gives you access to like every single Xbox game even some exclusives, plus another TB in your OneDrive and a TB in your Asus Cloud account. It's multiple hundred dollars of really desirable software bonuses thrown in there on top of an impossibly well priced unit.
So really, if you have a certain budget and have been looking for a gaming laptop, and this is in your budget, I would say your search is over. If you want something even newer and nicer that can compete with the best of the best from the newest gen, the Lenovo Legion 7 AMD Edition is an incredible computer but is priced much more similarly to its competition. It is slightly higher quality in build with all aluminum shell compared to this laptop's combo of metal and plastic, but it still feels completely premium and heavy. The specs are some of the best specs you can get on a laptop, period. For some reason people aren't doing 4k displays on laptops much any more, that would be my one last complaint. I would have rather had a 4k 120hz display. But again, for the price, that is asking way too much. You are already practically robbing Asus every time you buy one of these.
