- we applied with a cheap garden sprayer, and then worked in with brushes. This worked well even though the sprayer was very haphazard in its spray. It got the oil on the surface faster and easier than dipping a brush, but also allowed the benefit of brushwork (working it into every grain, getting a thin even coat). This worked well for two people working together, as we would spray down a section, then work together to brush it in using a couple cheap brushes that we just tossed after.
- we did all the vertical surfaces first, which are easier since you cant really over apply (it just runs down the pole). We wiped them all down after with rags (important) to remove excess.
- we then did the horizontal surfaces, spraying about 4 boards at a time, then brushing it in and spreading even. We did half the deck, wiped with rags, then did the other half and wiped with rags.
- The entire project took 2.5 hours for two people. The deck is about 250 sq. foot with a bit of railing and a couple stairs. That took exactly one gallon of oil.
- if you are careful to wipe up excess, there is really no issue with getting an even finish, even if you go over an area twice as you are moving along. The wood absorbs only so much oil, the rest needs to be wiped up.
When we do it again, what we will do differently is to purchase a nicer sprayer (a $25 one instead of the $9 one we used). This would make the initial coat pretty much uniform. We would still brush in, but much less work. The sprayer approach is also great when you have very thin cracks between each slat. The spray gets in even where a brush struggles. The spray first, and then brush after is so much faster than a brush or pad, and very clean, as there is no pan or can you are dipping into or moving around.
Unless you’re particularly OCD, you’re going to get some on your clothes. When this happens, they’re ruined. The stain will never come out and neither will the smell. I have some old t-shirts that I use for painting, and I’ve probably washed them 6 times after getting this stuff on them and they still have a strong Penofin odor.
As far as chemical smells go, Penofin isn’t unpleasant but it’s not something you’d choose for cologne. .
1. Ipe wood doesn't like to absorb the stuff very well so I had to make sure that I went back over it a few different times during the day to wipe off any excess that pushed its way up to the top.
2. It smells and I mean a lot. My furniture sits outside in the open air and I feel like it took close to a month for most of the smell to go away.
3. I can't remember how long it took to actually drive before I put my cushions back on but I know I let it go quite a few weeks.
4. A little bit of the stuff seems to go a long way and I thought that I would buy the gallon container and be able to keep it for a while. But after receiving it and reading the container I think it mentioned something about it possibly gelling up. I haven't checked my container to see if that actually happened but I would advise buying a small of a container as possible for your needs.
5. I feel like maybe it raise the grain of my wood a little bit and I need to take some steel wool to the top of my furniture. I could be wrong on that because my furniture sits outdoors but I recently built all of this and put a coat of the oil on it not too long after sending everything down turn nice smooth finish.
I probably buy it again if I had to and I'll keep reusing the stuff that I have but I don't know of any other brand that's supposedly protects as well.
