Great finish on these. There looks to be a light coating of polyurethane on one side. I ended up sanding it off. I bought the California and Iowa states. I decided to stain this, so keep in mind this is the first time I've ever stained something. Here's what I did.
For Iowa, I used 60 grit sand paper and random orbital sander to remove the original finish. Then 150 and 220 sand paper on the random orbital sander. Then Varathane pre-stain, 2 coats of a dark walnut colored Varathane stain, followed up with Varathane aerosol glossy polyurethane spray. I mint do another light sanding to smooth it out but it's still drying in the pictures.
For California, I did not use pre-stain. You can see the difference. California came out lighter colored.
The back side of these come with no coating.
To hang on the wall, I'm going to use some 1/2" aluminum spacers and 1.5 inch screws so these will be sort of "floating" on the wall.

My only critique is it is a little flimsier than I wanted it to be. Also I actually like the unfinished wood look better but it would be backwards. The bottle cap fits great as you can see pictured.

I love this and I’m happy I ordered it. The only issue I had was the corner was damaged. I felt the packaging could have better. It’s not completely the sellers fault it does have to travel a ways. Even with the small damage is a beautiful piece and I do think my husband will like it. It’s a great gift for any who likes beer and has an appreciation for it.
