Our Editor's Take

Every listener to rock & roll music has that moment that made them a true fan. Whether it is a song, chorus, a certain album, or a live performance that made them pay attention. This juncture is the essence of The Hook Rocks! podcast. The show wants to create a community for rock fans to talk about what got them addicted to the music. It wants to be a place where friends share memories and explore this passion further.

For the host of The Hook Rocks! podcast, that moment came at an early age. Jay Scott was about seven when his older brother brought a record home from school. The first sound that came through the record player was the piano. Jay's grandfather had been a pianist. So that familiar sound captivated him. Then came the voice of Steve Perry, which sounded like nothing he had ever heard before. The song was Don't Stop Believin' by Journey. It set Jay off a lifelong admiration for the genre, which resulted in this podcast.

On the podcast, Jay doesn't seek to be a music critic. He doesn't want to tell his audience what to listen to. Instead, he wants to explore what makes certain rock performers so appealing. He does that by dedicating full episodes to talk about the legacy bands have left behind. Acts such as Ozzy Osbourne, Def Leppard, and Whitesnake get featured on the show. Jay discusses their history and influence on music along with expert guests. The host also interviews renowned guitarists, like Brian Tatler of Diamond Head and guitarist Joe Satriani. He invites music writers, journalists, and critics to talk about their past with rock music.

While this music podcast doesn't want to dictate tastes, it does wish to help evolve them. Episodes devoted to introducing new music showcase artists that might be otherwise unknown. Jay interviews musical guests Austin Meade and the members of South of Eden. Not only does that provide exposure for the acts, but it helps the listeners discover more music to adore. The Hook Rocks! podcast premieres new episodes several times each week.
