Love my 3qt Instapot

Love my 3qt Instapot
Now this 3 qt Instapot has been a game changer and life savor many times. I have the 8qt and added the 3qt to utilize as my rice cooker and smaller portions, such as collard greens, to include eggs. This Instapot is very versatile, keeps items like queso warm and it is easy to travel with, such as to friends or even to work. I use it at least once a day and it sits nice and neatly on my kitchen counter.

It's just me most of the time, and this 3-quart IP couldn't be more perfect. The maximum capacity is actually 2 quarts because, as you know if you've used one before, you can't fill it to the top of the pot. I verified this using water and a big measuring cup before I used for the first time.

The very best feature of the 3-quart is the size ... you can actually give it a spot on the counter if you use it often as I do (it's not much larger than a 5-lb bag of flour). When you figure out how versatile it is you WILL want to leave it out because you'll use it every day. My 6 and 8 quart IPs don't get used anywhere near that much, mostly because I cook for one, but also because I don't have to drag the unit out of the closet and put it back when I'm done (first world problems, I know).

The recipe book that comes with will get you off to a good start if you haven't used an IP before. The numerous settings allow you to cook anything, and even the presets can be customized for time and temperature. Customizing isn't necessary, but it surely is nice when you find out that a preset doesn't give you the results you want. Found out last night when making some hamburger steaks in brown gravy that the IP will warn you if something is burning or beginning to stick to the pot. It stopped cooking and gave an alert. I manually released the pressure and opened the unit, thinned the gravy a bit, stirred and finished the cook cycle with no further problem. The alert indicated "burned", but it was actually just beginning to stick to the bottom of the stainless steel pot a little. It would have certainly burned had the IP not told me.

My favorite regular use is to make yogurt. With this size IP, I don't even mess with the yogurt cups or jars. I make it right in the pot, strain it most of the time but not always, and then store the pot in the fridge with the IP brand silicone lid. The nonstick ceramic inner pot works best for making the yogurt in the pot itself. The yogurt setting is one that I had to customize because the preset temps were incorrect for my needs. My IP also seems to heat just about 2* lower than it’s set for, so I compensate for that.

I vacuum sealed some NY strip steaks with seasoning and used the IP to sous vide them to 135* then finish them off with a quick sear in a skillet or on the grill. Superb - juicy - flavorful.

Along with the 3-quart model, I also invested in a few extra inner pots, both stainless steel and the nonstick ceramic, IP silicone lids, a springform pan, as well as an accessory kit that included the egg rack, silicone egg bite mold, glass lid (for using as a crock or sauce pot) and steamer basket. I've included links to all of those at the end of this review and they may save you some time :)

So many meals taste better as leftovers and, if you have extra inner pots with lids, you can make meals for the entire week in one day and put them in the fridge. That's the other great thing about the 3-quart size ... the covered pots fit easily in the refrigerator. I love to be out in the yard in the evenings, and making meals ahead of time gives me the freedom to do just that and still have fabulous eats.

Bonus: I can take this setup in the RV and need almost nothing else besides a frying pan. It doesn't get easier.

If you haven't, join a couple or more IP groups on Facebook. Lots of recipes and tips get shared in these groups! The official IP page is good too.

First off, let me say I STOLE this thing on a Warehouse deal! If you know InstanPot, you know what this is and what it does. It an automated electric pressure cooker. Duh. This Ultra is especially nice but they’ll all do pretty much the same thing as any other model. The WIN here, for me, is the size. I’ve come across many recipes over the years where the water doesn’t scale correctly to my 8qt, or are specifically made for the 3qt minis. It’s small! So know what you are buying! That said, if you have a larger IP, and have considered the need for the smaller one, find a great deal and add it to your kitchen.

In general, everything has worked ok so far. I’m especially fond of the rice setting. 1 cup rice, well rinsed. 2 cups water. Rice setting. Release immediately. Is it faster? No. Is it perfect rice every time? Yep. And it frees my attention and stovetop to proceed with the remainder of the meal. I considered buying a rice cooker just before I stumbled onto this. I bought this for the price of 2 mini rice cookers. If it does nothing else, I’m happy enough with the rice function. Even if you only used this as a warmer, to keep food or soup hot for serving or a potluck carry-in, it’s a good value if bought correctly.

I also find this smaller one to be a little faster. The “community” collectively believes that’s because of the smaller volume of steam that needs to be generated to reach operating pressure. So, I suppose it comes to pressure faster, but cook times all remain the same as any larger IP. It’s time saved either way.

I haven’t tried the slow cooker feature yet. This is one point at which my 8qt IP failed miserably. I don’t expect this one to do any better, but I also did not buy this with any intention of using that feature. Sure, it would be nice to move an extra appliance down the road. But, a slow cooker is what it is and is famous for what it does for a reason. An IP is not a slow cooker, but pressure cooking is a close approximation.

All in, this is a great device if your expectations are are appropriately sized to match. If you are single or couple, this is a great all around size. If you are a family or group of 4 or more, size up to a 6 or 8 qt if it will be your sole InstantPot. If you meal prep and want to cook in volume, obviously go bigger. If you have room to keep both, I feel the both have a place in the kitchen arsenal.

Final thought- would I pay the full $119 for this pot? Probably not. At $41 delivered, via Amazon Warehouse, I think you should grab it and run for the checkout. Mine was sold as “like new” and my pot was flawless. All documentation and accessories, still in sealed plastic. Not sure why it was in Warehouse. My guess, is that someone bought it, was surprised by the small size, and returned. Fine by me and my wallet!
