1. Easy to use, there's no temperature dial, it warms up quickly, you put your food and take it out when you think it's done. While there's no temperature dial, the unit does appear to cool down if you raise the lid fully up, the green "ready" light turns off and it turns back on once you lower the lid and it warms up again. I'm not sure if this was intentionally designed to cool down if you raise the lid, it might just be due to the cooking plates having a wide amount of cool air between them with the lid raised, not sure but I'll take it lol.
2. Cooks from both sides at the same time and it cooks FAST. Two rock hard completely frozen burger patties straight out of the freezer are cooked completely in 4 minutes, I timed it (and the included booklet says they should cook for 3-4 minutes).
3. No mess, no splatter cooking, beats oil splattering around and having to clean the entire stovetop.
4. Doesn't produce oily fumes either, if you don't like oily fumes traveling and leaving an oily residue on everything near the kitchen or don't have a hood/range fan over your stove.
5. The kickstand to slant it and drain the grease is a HUGE plus, practically the best part. Your average 20-25% fat burgers drains out a huge pool of oil.
So the convenience in cooking is there but... it's balanced negatively by the inconvenience in cleaning and its dated and cheap design. The cons are:
1. It's been more than a decade, why they can't make a design with removable cooking plates is perplexing.
2. No temperature dial? Fine but the lack of a simple toggle switch for power (which probably costs ten cents per-unit) is a big thumbs down. Having to plug and unplug every time you use it becomes annoying, it's even more annoying if you position this in your kitchen where the outlet is hard to access.
3. The drip tray with its sharp right angles and the two thin wing passages is annoying to clean, making the shape like that is weird for something that's going to have tenacious oily residues in it. It also should lock onto the unit or have a backstop at the least, so you can push it in below until it stops in the proper position. In its current form it's very easy to accidentally push the tray away from it OR push it too far under and find out you've been dripping grease onto your counter top the whole time.
4. A new unit will produce an obnoxious odor, almost like burning plastic or electronics. It's almost bad enough to interfere with eating what it cooks afterward. This goes away completely by the third cook or so.
Overall I love it and I don't regret buying it at all, it's better, healthier and less messy than using a stovetop. Seeing the amount of grease that drains out is wild.
Here are some tips:
1. Ideally try to clean it while it's warm, especially if you're cooking something with animal fats, once the fats cool into lard you'll find it difficult to clean without hot water to dissolve them anyway.
2. Don't scrub with abrasives, you'll damage the non-stick coating.
3. If constantly plugging and unplugging it becomes annoying, you may want to buy an inline power switch, it's a little cord with a power switch on it, it plugs into the outlet, then you plug your grill into that, this way you have a switch in the electrical circuit between the wall power and your grill (the switch they should have built into the unit in the first place...).
There's two ways I clean the grill, the first way I do most often because it's simpler and doesn't impact the taste of the food.
1. Use a cheap spray bottle filled with water, after cooking spritz onto the grill surface, wait at least a minute with grill off before doing this so you don't get water splattering on hot oil. The residual heat combined with water starts to steam deglaze the bits off, then use a paper towel or rag to wipe the bits off the grill plates.
2. Position the grill with the kickstand out so that its run off is directed into your sink, then using the soft non-scotchbrite abrasive side of a sponge only, use dish soap and water. For the top grill plate I soap it up like the bottom, but since it doesn't contour in a way that runs water off, I flip the unit upside down and kind of angle it weirdly so the water runs off the side of the top plate, then pour hot water using a cup (if you have a sink with a hose this would be much easier).
I'd use the second method involving soap if you plan on putting the unit away for an extended period of time, if you're using it frequently the first method is faster.
Lastly, not sure why but they printed "George Foreman" on the top with no mention of "grill", so I just treat it as if the grill is literally named "George Foreman" and talk to it, you should too. Thank you for cooking my food for me George! LOL
