Only Man Among All Those Spirited Women!

Only Man Among All Those Spirited Women!
Director George Cukor must have been in heaven handling the cream of the MGM actresses in this 1939 dramedy. The following contains spoilers, although this isn't really a "spoiler" kind of movie. There are no men in this movie, except me, as the viewer. Being alone with Rosiland Russell, Paulette Goddard, Joan Fontaine and sweet Norma Shearer isn't the worst way to spend two hours, assuming any wife is foolish enough to leave her man in their company (more on that in a minute). It's part screwball comedy, part melodrama. The characters are bewildering at first (even with the cute cast intro as animals) and the rat-a-tat-tat delivery by Russell, (who manages to keep it up even while doing calisthenics) is hard to catch. It's worth back-to-back viewings to catch the one-liners.Perfect wife and mother Norma Shearer, one of the few admirable women in the pack, loses hubby to shopgirl Joan Crawford and her "friends" just can't wait to engineer her discovery of the betrayal. Eventually, everyone ends up on the train to Reno where they wait out their quickie divorces together at some sort of divorcee dude ranch. Rosiland Russell gets into a catfight with Paulette Goddard and rips her clothes partially off. I found this very entertaining--not so sure about women viewers. (Mr. Hays was asleep at the switch during one of Goddard's appearances.)The costumes by Adrian are wonderful, of course. Rosiland Russell rocks a top with three creepy eyeballs on it! (She gets all the best costumes & lines as they myopic and meddling Sylvia Fowler.) There is a funny tongue-in-cheek French fashion show shown in glorious Technicolor in this otherwise B&W movie. The humor ranges from innuendo and witty one-liners to really, really broad. The message seems strange these days: men are helpless sheep against all those female wolves out there and it's up to wives to fight for them. See, a guy having an affair is like getting TB. A wife doesn't abandon the trenches under fire! Pride is something a woman in love can't afford! I don't think just women are going to be taken aback by that. In fact, women are portrayed as conniving, mean-spirited, and either predatory or victims. As I mentioned, there isn't a single man in it, and the dated message may make this more of a guy movie than one for women. It would be a shame for guys to skip this one on account of the title. Movies with actresses like this are always spoiled by a bunch of male cast members. It's fun to be the only guy watching how women really act when we're not around. Okay, no women ever acted like this, but it's still entertaining. Paulette Goddard is very pretty and Roz Russell is very entertaining.
