General Impressions – 4.5 out of 5
You know as soon as you take this amp out of the box that you’re holding something special. The amp itself is a work of art and it is honestly a shame that its small form factor means it will be hidden away in most vehicles. From the Alpine logo to the removable panel allowing you to get to the adjustments the amp is just pleasing to look at and has a good heft to it letting you know this isn’t a lackluster multichannel amp from the days of yore. This amp is so well put together and seamless I had to refer to the manual to figure out how to take the trim ring off of it to get to the holes for the mounting screws.
The plugs that you wire the speakers/power to and then plug into the amp are genius. For someone like me it is absolutely perfect for my application. I have it mounted up under the steering column in a Jeep Wrangler away from the elements and prying eyes. Standing outside the vehicle you cannot tell where the amp is.
The manual also does a very good job of explaining everything including most common wiring setups for those new users that may be confused.
The only reason I gave 4.5/5 is because the plugs that go into the amp feel somewhat cheap. The set screws on the speaker plugs are extremely tiny, and the plugs feel kind of cheap. I was afraid to break one since there are no extras so I didn’t tighten the set screws as hard as I wanted to. This resulted in a couple wires pulling out of the plugs during installation. I went back and tightened them down harder and everything was fine.
Sound Quality – 5 out of 5
Wow. This amp blows away many other amps I have heard, which is surprising for its class and size. At first I was not very impressed, but once I got all the settings on my head unit dialed in I was impressed. My current speakers are Polk DB which are entry level speakers and even with these the sound if just stellar. I plan to pick up with a set of Alpines which will handle everything this amp can throw at them.
The high’s from my tweeters are crystal clear, the mids are just right, and the bass is deep and full.
Some other users have reported a pop or click when the amp turns on, but I have none of this. The amp was wired using high quality Knu Konceptz power and RCA cables and just sounds amazing. I used a good solid ground and also have no alternator whine, hissing, or feedback whatsoever.
Power – 5 out of 5
This tiny little amp puts out big power for its size, and I mean big. This amp puts out even above what its rated at with enough consistent voltage. The birth sheet for mine said 135 rms and 571 rms, respectively. I could blow my speaker and subs with a twist of the knob. Alpine definitely delivers on their stated power ratings and then some. This is uncommon, especially in the lower end spectrum of mobile audio amps.
My current speakers and subwoofer cannot handle all of the power this amp puts out. Like I said above I plan to pick up a set of Alpine speakers. My sub is currently a 10” JBL GTO capable of about 400rms. I smelled voice coil within ten minutes of playing with the system after installation. I also plan to pick up an Alpine 10” capable of far more power.
One Issue: This amp comes with speaker adapters for the amp, which work great, except if they are not working correctly which was the case with one of the ones that came with mine, no biggie, I was finally able to get it to work but it got me thinking that if for any reason you break one you are screwed since there is no other way to connect the wires to the amp but through this adapters.
I am no audio expert but here are some tips:
1) Make sure you are using good wires and make solid connections all over your system, failing to do so will lead you to blame Alpine for your products not sounding great, or cutting off, or hearing engine whine noises or what have you. You can buy the most expensive equipment out there but if your connections are no good, you're expensive equipment will make no difference.
2) Be very careful with what you are doing if your are setting up an active front stage, you WILL blow your tweeters otherwise.
3) My system sounds like everything I have ever dreamed of, this is because this amp is amazing, but also because I am sending very clean signal to it by using an EQ (you don't need one if you have a good sound processing head unit or something that will clean up your music signal), don't expect to send poop to it and get amazing sound out, you will get amplified poop out...
This product is special. End of story....
I really didn't believe the hype with this amp, I was never impressed with there speakers either and they sounded good but IMO identical to infinity speakers.
My birth sheet was rated on par with others 137 to the doors! I verified this myself & yes I was very doubtful with claims like that I need proof! the only complaint I have is that the bass knob I had to by separate sucked and would always vibrate to the high bass setting, I fixed it my self and now my car screams when I want it to.
I have never owned an amp that was this consistent even after a few hours of use, this Alpine is top notch and I couldn't be happier:). Don't wait to install, if you don't love it return it. I also bought a pair of Infinity reference components that run at 2ohm and they sound really good with this amp, my Memphis made them sound like pigs squealing in my doors!! Now I need to sack up and get a couple of sets of focal components found here on amazon for about 400!
I'm not a stereo whore and honestly I just like my music loud and clear and when I want a little thump I don't want to hear my car rattle like a bag of soda cans in the trunk! This amp I am sure will sound even better with a premium set of components, but my budget infinity sound damn good too! My wife btw always wants my car now, she cranks it up and loves it!
