This unit is well worth the extra cost.
My circular saw is old but reliable, and I have tried to dial in the edge guides on the Kreg jig a few times, with mixed success. I am getting very good accuracy but not perfect accuracy. This may be my fault. In any case, I like the ease of setting the jig, the clamping mechanism works quite well. I think the only way to be more accurate is to have a plunge circular saw with guide rail.
I will probably make my own zero clearance plywood guide rail if I need to be more exact.
For some odd reason the two Retractable Cutline Indicators don't slide through so easily. It was tough to insert them into position and they get a bit sticky when trying to move them. I'm afraid to push them too far (since it's plastic) it may end up breaking. Maybe after a bit of wear and tear they will slip better or perhaps I can put some baby powder or something to make it slide easier??
I like the fact that I can use this either as a 2 foot guide or a 4 foot guide (if I add the extension), plus the fact that I can purchase additional segments to make it even longer -- that is great... But the part that Kreg did not do so well is why did they make it so cumbersome to put them together and then apart? !
We got to deal with 8 (tiny) screw sets and an allen (hex) wrench! It will take almost 15 to 20 mins. putting it together or taking it apart, not to mention that when you put it together you gotta make sure you got both pieces aligned correctly (with a level or something) or you can forget about cutting straight past that point.
I get that we just need to loosen them up to take them apart, but still a pain in the rear when having to put them back together and etc. -- and not to mention they are 8 screw sets to deal with! Plus those set screws can easily just fall out during that procedure -- good luck finding them on a floor full of sawdust! -- lol
Couldn't they have managed to come up with something much easier to work with when doing that process? They failed that concept -- for sure!
NOTE: I've used other types (brands) of cutting guides and some are much easier to put them together and apart.
So with that, I give it 3 stars for now, I still haven't used it to cut with my circular saw, that will be tomorrow morning to see how the rest of it handles that.
I am kind of curious how the mechanism of clamping the rail on a board -- I'm used to the ratchet type clamping style and this one doesn't have this type of feature, its more like a pull and push procedure and it's still a bit iffy to me.
I will later update this review after that fact.... (to be continued)...
P.S. I was also surprised on the lack of branding... the box it came with is just a plain looking carton box -- customized to fit the shipment, no markings; and absolutely nothing that it shows on the carton box what's inside and etc. So I will have to make sure I mark it somehow, so I know I don't toss it away if in case I need to return it or something.
It almost looks like they shipped me a demo version, but all the accessories were included, so no problem with that, plus it looked brand new and all the nuts and screws were inside sealed clear plastic bags.
Plus they shipped it with that box and the inner packaging doesn't really protect the rails. If the delivery people would have stomped on it or stepped on it (by accident) -- it would have bent the aluminum rails and pretty much destroyed them.
UPDATE:
Well I did try to use it the next day, but I found some more issues. Right now I am contacting Kreg Tools to see if they can sort it out. I might have gotten a faulty one. I'll later update this at a later time.
UPDATE 2:
Kreg Tools sent me a replacement, and that solved 99.9% of my issues I reported earlier. It seems the first one I got was a bit troubled (must have been a floor model version or something). So the replacement was perfect. Boosting to 4 stars for that.
