“If you’re looking for a new series with the same kind of found family, band of brothers feel you got from Albert’s Out of Uniform, this is the place to start!” (Small Queer, Big Opinions)

Introducing Annabeth Albert’s Hotshots series: The emotions and intensity of Chicago Fire with the raw, natural elements of Man vs. Wild.

Smokejumper Lincoln Reid is speechless to see Jacob Hartman among his squad’s new recruits. Linc had promised his late best friend he’d stay away from his little brother. And yet here Jacob is...and almost instantly, the same temptation Linc has always felt around him is causing way too many problems.

Jacob gets everyone’s concerns, but he’s waited years for his shot at joining the elite smokejumping team, hoping to honor his brother’s memory. He’s ready to tackle any challenge Linc throws his way, and senses the chemistry between them - chemistry Linc insists on ignoring - is still alive and kicking. This time, Jacob’s determined to get what he wants.

Close quarters and high stakes make it difficult for Linc to keep his resolve, nevermind do so while also making sure the rookie’s safe. But the closer they get, the more Linc’s plan to leave at the end of the season risks him breaking another promise: the one his heart wants to make to Jacob.

Danger lurks everywhere for Central Oregon’s fire crews, but the biggest risk of all might be losing their hearts.

Burn Zone by Annabeth Albert is the first book in her Hotshots series. If you read my review of High Heat, you know I read Book 2 before Book 1. I do think the books can be read as standalones but, as mentioned in my review, you do meet up with Linc and Jacob in that book and you learn about Garrick’s accident in this book.

Linc and Jacob stole my heart in this book; I think they’re my favorites over Garrick and Rain in High Heat. Linc (full name Lincoln) is a smokejumper along with Garrick and Jacob is Linc’s best friend, Wyatt’s, younger brother.

This book was an emotional rollercoaster ride. Jacob and Linc have been attracted to each other for years but Linc holds himself back due to the fact that he feels like he owes Wyatt and his family. Resigning himself to the idea that Linc would never settle for him, Jacob proposes a temporary fling to work their attraction out of their systems. The more time they spend together, the more feelings start to deepen between the two.

Eventually, Jacob ends up revealing his new feelings to Linc and forces Linc to make a decision. Of course, a firefighter romance wouldn’t be a firefighter romance without the dangers of fighting fires. As Linc comes to a decision, their lives are put in danger by an out of control forest fire. Will they make it out in time? Will Linc and Jacob get their HEA? Pick up this book to find out; available to buy on Amazon and on KU.

4.5

I'm not sure if this book had a slow start or it's just me who had one stressed out 2 weeks. But for some reason it took me time to understand Linc's true reasoning for pushing the one guy he is unable to resist, no matter the promises made to a dead man. Yet once I was IN the story I was TOTALLY in. Linc's background story is heart breaking and Jacob with his fun and loving personality seems to be the best cure for Linc's default mode of burying himself in the past. There is quite a bit age difference between them (10 years) but I gotta say it never truly showed in the interaction between them. They were a match made in heaven or rather Annabeth's head yet though there is fire around them with their occupation as Smoke Jumpers this is a true slow burn.

Lincoln Reid has known Wyatt Hartman all of his life. They have been best friends from when they were little and though Linc coming out as gay pushed their friendship to it's limits, after awhile away, when he returned, things sort of went back to how they were before. Though some (or rather few) people know about Linc's sexual orientation it's not something he talks about and even the Hartman family - one he considers his own - doesn't know. Yet one guy figures it out - Jacob - Wyatt's little brother, who comes out himself as being gay. That's when Wyatt makes it VERY clear to Linc he needs to STAY AWAY and that he does, for 6 years. But when Wyatt dies on the job he shortly takes comfort in Jacob's arms and from there, especially considering Jacob's new post on his (their) Smoke Jumpers crew, makes him totally and utterly irresistible.

Jacob Hartman has waited enough for Linc to see his as a man and though Wyatt's memory always looms over both of them, he doesn't understand why Linc keeps resisting what is obvious between them. He might have made a promise to Wyatt but it has been years and Wyatt isn't HERE anymore. Jacob struggles with making Linc see him, truly SEE him and be proud of the man he has become - see how much he has grown up, the man he has become, his strength and ability, his resolve to be a Smoke Jumper even after his brother's death. He has wanted it for years and worked hard to make it his future. His mother isn't thrilled about it as well and though she tried to send Linc to make him change his mind, he is determined to show both of them, okay, mostly Linc, what he is made of.

Though Linc would rather see Jacob in any other occupation he can't ignore the fact he is actually good at it, and has a lot of promise. It's hard to ignore when he is working with him in their old team (with Ray and Garrick). Though he wanted to keep his distance from Jacob both guys asked to have Jacob with them as their own way of keeping Jacob safe. But how can he keeps his HEART safe when he sees the guy he wants everyday? Especially after desperate Jacob offers Linc to "get their attraction off their system". They both don't think it will work but they need SOMETHING as both can't take it anymore.

Jacob and Linc used to be friends. Jacob helped Linc with getting things out of his house after his father had died so it's no wonder once they start seeing each other again (even if the reason is to blow steam) turns fast into a friendship and a deeper one, more comfortable one almost domestic, once they spend more and more time together. They see what it is, what's going on, yet Jacob is too scared to spook Linc away. Linc is in his own battle with himself as it is. He knows he will always care for Jacob but he simply CANNOT make a claim. He would rather run away once the fire season is over.

There is a lot of back and forth between these two, with the danger of the job and the huge question marks both men are fighting, each in his own head. Linc feels so alone in the world. He has no one but the Hartman family but he doesn't expect them to stay this way with Jacob by his side. He is also unable to break free from his promise to Wyatt. Jacob on the other hand just wishes Linc would SAY what he is obviously feeling and showing Jacob with every touch, every meal prepared. He believes they can make it work, even while working together. They are a good team.

This book was quite the ride. It was heartfelt and endearing as it was frustrating with Linc being so damn stubborn (talking about Jacob being the stubborn one? really?!) but it was SO worth it to wait for them to find their footing. Now all we have to do is wait and not that long for Garrick Nelson's book, coming in July. Garrick is currently dealing with his own issues after an occurrence near the ending of this book, wonder how he will deal with it.

If you are a fan of slow burn I HIGHLY RECOMMEND you give this one a go.

This is certainly a new series for me and Annabeth did not skimp on any of the anguish, excitement or the love!
Lincoln is a fire jumper that worked with Jacob's brother for many years. Then his brother died and Jacob earned his place as a fire jumper against the wishes of Lincoln and Jacob's family.
The excitement of the fires the dangers and the growing love between those two men will keep you turning pages as fast as possible!

I didn't find this book as emotionally engaging as many of Annabeth Albert's other books. It jumps around a lot so that many scenes aren't given the space to fully develop and give the reader a chance to immerse themselves into the situation.

Jacob an Lincoln’s story was very well written an such a joy to read. One lusty teen an one undecided family friend take on the journey of finding each other when everything an seemingly everyone is in their way. Twists and turns add to the heat making the HEA a controlled burn we all can enjoy.

I wasn't expecting too much from this type of book. So that ment I was even more surprised to find how much I liked it. Started a little slow and predictable but the character development was superior and the wasn't too much hand wringing after they got together. All in all worth my time and yours. Also learned a nice amount of fire/smoke jumping and those parts were well written.

I love this story about a young mans crush turning in to something more but can it be something lasting?
No unnecessary descriptions of surroundings
The story is filled with despair, love and split feelings.
Linc is torn between his promise to a friend and his feeling for Jacob. In some ways I can see his predicament but at the same time I’m thinking; he was not worth your promise.
The storyline is good and progresses nicely to a happy ending

5 stars for a beautiful mm story that is filled with feelings

What I admire most about this Author is you can count on superb research. Where I'm from we don't have forestry dangers like these. At the time I read this the west coast seems to be burning out of control. I pray for the residents and the crews trying to save them. This story gave a life and personality to two of those brave souls. Lincoln and Jacob had a long roe to hoe with lots of baggage. This is a MAGNIFICENT representation of the men in this area. I really ENJOYED this book. I HIGHLY, HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK!!!!!!

Burn Zone is the the first book in the Hotshots series for Annabeth Albert and when I saw the cover (so hot 🔥🔥🔥) and read the blurb I was insanely excited to start. I mean what’s not to love... MM romance, smoke jumpers (which I did not know existed till this book. Sad I know) 😲 sexy men, hidden attraction, off the charts sexual chemistry, slow burn .. I mean the list goes on. Just like I have noticed with the other two books I have read in her library, I was hooked from chapter one.

This book tells the story of Lincoln Reid, seasoned smokejumper and Jacob Hartman, new recruit going through the vigorous training to join the elite smokejumpers team. These two are no strangers, Lincoln is the best friend/Work partner of Jacob’s late brother Wyatt.

There is a complicated history that spans 6 years between Linc & Jacob. They are friends because of Wyatt but Jacob has had a crush since he was 19. Now 25 and he’s determined to show Linc he’s more than Wyatt Hartman’s “Younger KID Brother” and that crush? It’s only gotten worse and intensified. He’s stubborn, determined and more than willing to show Lincoln what he’s got firmly in his sights ... him and a career he’s been working his butt of to get. He wants both and he’ll stop at nothing to get them.

I loved both these characters for very different reasons because well... they are very different people, Jacob is Out and Lincoln is not. But that’s not all that’s different. Even though there is 10 years between them , I found Jacob very mature for his age, he was confident and I loved how his strong determination and ‘go getter’ attitude was exactly what Lincoln needed.
Now Linc... well my heart just exploded for him. That man has the weight of the world on his shoulders and I felt extreme empathy for all that he had been through. The more you learn about him through each page, you more you can’t help but fall in love.

I’m not saying anymore on where this story goes, you just have to read and enjoy the ride. It’s exciting, emotional, heartfelt and will have you turning the pages at rapid pace.

Loved every minute and cannot wait to see where book two has Annabeth taking us for Garrett’s story.

Linc was so annoying omg he was painful. Still I am totally clueless at why he could never have a relationship with Jacob. Wyatt was not friend either not accepting Linc his best friend as being gay and was cruel to him but was still Linc’s best friend and why he wouldnt date Jacob. Who needs enemies when you have friends like Wyatt. Though it is sad he died and he did do some nice things for Linc.
Jacob wow was one determined guy, I would of walked away ages ago, wouldnt put myself through that much rejection, especially for no good reason for being redirected. Jacob was a strong gorgeous mature MC. Linc never got it, this story started very slowly and took me forever to get into it was going to skip reading it, and I did skip a bit of it. But three stars going to the end when they do get together as they do make a great couple. Hopefully next one is better.

Took me a while to get into this book; I always forget how thorough Annabeth Albert is with her research and I wasn't in the mood for something too in depth when I first had a go at it. I also have to be in the mood to stick with a story with a fair bit of martyrdom by one character ("I know what's best for you, even without consulting you or taking into account your wants or needs and even if it makes me unhappy").
Definitely glad I persisted though. It's a well written, well researched story and the characters are all beautifully formed and more-ish. Linc also has a lot of character growth throughout, so hang in there with him.
Will be hanging for the next book.
