Product Description
After an undisputed reign at the peak of Hong Kong's film industry in the 1960s, Shaw Brothers (the studio founded by real-life brothers Run Run and Runme Shaw) found their dominance challenged by up-and-coming rivals in the early 1970s. They swiftly responded by producing hundreds of the most iconic action films ever made, revolutionizing the genre through the hard work of top-shelf talent on both sides of the camera as well as unbeatable widescreen production value, much of it shot at 'Movietown', their huge, privately-owned studio on the outskirts of Hong Kong.
This inaugural collection by Arrow Video presents twelve jewels from the Shaw crown, all released within the 1970s, kicking off in 1972 with Korean director Jeong Chang-hwa's King Boxer, the film that established kung fu cinema as an international box office powerhouse when it hit Stateside cinemas under the title Five Fingers of Death. From there we see Chang Cheh (arguably Shaw's most prolific director) helm the blood-soaked brutality of The Boxer from Shantung and two self-produced films in his 'Shaolin Cycle' series, Five Shaolin Masters and its prequel Shaolin Temple, before taking a detour into Ho Meng Hua's King Kong-inspired Mighty Peking Man, one of the most unmissably insane giant monster films ever made. Chang's action choreographer Lau Kar-leung then becomes a director in his own right, propelling his adoptive brother Gordon Liu to stardom in Challenge of the Masters and Executioners from Shaolin. Not to be outdone, Chang introduces some of Shaw's most famous faces to the screen, including Alexander Fu Sheng fighting on the streets of San Francisco in Chinatown Kid and, of course, the mighty Venom Mob in The Five Venoms and Crippled Avengers. Finally, Lau and Liu successfully meld high kicks with humor in two of their masterworks, Heroes of the East and Dirty Ho, both co-starring fan favorite Hsiao Hou.
From kickass kung fu killers to crazy kaiju knockoffs to culture clash comedies, this carefully curated and gorgeously presented selection of all-time Shaw Brothers classics merely represents the tip of the iceberg of the studio's rich output, making it both an ideal starting point for newcomers and a treat for hardcore fans alike.

Some of the highlights of the set include The 36th Chamber of Shaolin, Five Deadly Venoms, and The Five Shaolin Masters. These films are all classics of the genre, and they feature some of the most iconic kung fu action ever put on film. The set also includes a number of lesser-known gems, such as The Deadly Duo and The Chinese Boxer. These films are just as good as the more famous ones, and they offer a glimpse into the wide variety of kung fu films that were made during this period.
In addition to the films, Shawscope: Volume One also includes a wealth of bonus features. There are interviews with cast and crew members, documentaries about the Shaw Brothers studio, and even a kung fu workout video. These bonus features are a great way to learn more about the films and the people who made them.
Shawscope: Volume One is an essential purchase for any fan of kung fu cinema. This set is packed with classic films, bonus features, and high-quality presentation. If you're a fan of martial arts movies, then this is the set for you.

The one thing drawback that have found so far is the fact that at least one of the guys doing a commentary really doesn't know when to shut up. There are some commentaries where you kind of have to fill the space to get all the information in, but some of at least one of the commentators is just kind of babbling on-and-on ... unnecessarily so. If it weren't for subtitles, you wouldn't be able to keep up with movie because you can't hear the dialog (and even if I can't understand the dialog, I still want to hear it). Worst of all, talking over fight scenes. It's a FIGHT SCENE just shut up already. I mean, yeah. The guy just needs to shut up sometimes and let people enjoy the movie. It wasn't that all the info was bad, because it wasn't and some of it I wouldn't have known unless they talked about it, but still, even so ... I'm trying to enjoy the movie!
So that's my main gripe.
I've watched 4 or 5 of the movies at this point and they are really high quality versions of the films. Beautiful.
There are soundtrack CDs, I think 2 of them, but I haven't checked them out yet.
The box is really nice. Not sure what to do with the wrap around cover thing that has the film listing on it as it doesn't stay tight to the box. I just set it aside near where I display my set.
There are two books in the box. One book is about the movies and the actors and such. The other holds the discs and write-up on the discs. I have to say that this appears to be a great way to store the discs. I think this is a much better way to store discs than the plastic boxes (some of which made with plastic that is so hard that it can easily damage a disc if you get too rough with it.)
So yeah, I know it takes a while to make a quality product like this, and that I haven't even watched all the discs provided with this set (let alone the various versions of the films), but where is Volume 2 (and ... 3 and 4... and, well you get the idea).
Oh, and for a throw in Kaiju film, I would have rather have seen Inframan in the set instead of the Mighty Peking Man.

Big thanks to Arrow films for this!!!

The films are pristine, and it was a pleasure to see them in such excellent condition. It was also really interesting to some of the choices made between dubbing and original subtitles - there has clearly been quite a lot of care and effort put into this, and it deserves a big shout-out! As far as I can tell, nothing seems to have slipped by - there were occasions where even the otherwise-excellent HKL team allowed for a few dreaded 'dub-titles'...but the QC from Arrow Films seems nothing if not meticulous!
There's so much to like about the entire box-set. I found it well-presented, and I enjoyed seeing the level of care that had gone into the design of the box, as well as artwork that captures the spirit of the movies and characters. However, most impressive 'off-DVD' is the high-quality writing in the booklet accompanying this set, in which various intricacies and film plots are relayed in an engaging fashion - although fingers crossed that the spoiler synopses I didn't read are not riddled with typos or grammatical errors :D
While the aforementioned Tarantino doesn't appear as a commentator in this collection, there are one or two films here that clearly inspired very minor aspects of his work. As far as the extras go - wow! There is a diverse range of commentary tracks that are on a par with the best I've ever heard. Certainly, while one could quibble about the lack of tracks on a small number of the movies, there's nothing redundant in any of the commentaries visited so far. It really is all great and informative stuff! There are also numerous interviews with the star names from both behind and in front of the camera. It's great to see a mix of archive and new material put into one big collection like this. There are some extras that I haven't had the time to dive into yet, but I don't think they'll be knocking any stars or half-stars off from this review.
Overall, this works out at just less than £10 a movie right now, and that seems like a pretty good deal to me :)
I noticed that a volume 2 is likely to be on the way, and I'm already looking forward to it! Great work!
This box set is a work of beauty, the booklet, how it is housed but its the films that are the real stand out. The love care and attention to remastering them is amazing, they all look gorgeous, I know nothing about transfers or restorations but my God, you would never believe they were all made over 40 years ago.
Lau Kar-leung is my favourite film maker of all time and the 4 films featured in this set are some of the best I have ever seen. Some people get excited by Strictly come dancing, for me it's well executed martial arts choreography. If you want to see an example of this, Dirty Ho will leave you gobsmacked.
I have seen around 300 kung fu films and this set has around 5 that are in my top 20 of all time. AND it's less than a month until Shawscope volume 2 is out. Just buy this set, you won't be disappointed!!!
Die Gnadenlos 5 ist auch mit Chang Che logo und Uncut. Ein Muss für jeden Fan i
