I'm so happy with these LCD-1 headphones! They perform beautifully, recreating the sound that I expect, but no more ear fatigue!
They are open-backed and so not noise canceling, and though that means I need to control the sound in the room in order to mix, I do that anyway. I can mix now for hours without having to take a break.
Now I just need to do a better job mixing :)
The detail and separation are so much better than what I'm used to, even while just listening from the MacBook output.
I bought these on the recommendation of a respected mastering engineer I happen to know, and agree with him that these headphones are totally worth the investment.
* Addition: I must say that the constructive quality is not on a par with the audio: the headband contains hard plastic parts that break easily.
Everything regarding the product was perfectly fine. It didn’t look used but again, the product appeared to be an open box item. The item description defined stated for it to be a new item.
There was no plastic wrap on the box nor a manual, user guide, or spec sheet but it had a booklet cardboard cover which is what I think where the user manual should have been.
Beware the seller. The item appears to have arrived “new” but it all the previously stated details about the packaging.
-Ear pads are deep enough but the padding is so plush that it compresses to the point that my ear touches the driver and it is very uncomfortable to wear after about 30 minutes. I''m constantly readjusting to try to get them comfortable. My ears are not big by any standards. Ear opening is really small too.
-Head band causes me to have a hot spot on my head after about 30 minutes because it only comes in contact with a small portion of my head.
-Materials are suspect at best. Many headphones are made from plastic but this feels nearly identical to a Sony WTH700n that I also have. I believe the retail on those was $200 and they can be had much lower than that. Obviously Sony has way more buying power than Audeze but still... The design is eerily similar as well. This leads me to believe these are off the shelf type designs and that the headband was just a private label of an existing design that had a few changes.
-Ear cups rotate the wrong way. Purely my opinion but other cans I have rotate so they would lay flat against your chest when you take them off your head. These rotate the opposite way which doesn't enable them to lay flat against my chest but instead hug my neck when I take them off.
-Cable is weirdly too long. Good quality though. Perfect for desk top listening but these are marketed as a travel/portable headphone so the length of the cord is odd. Very easy to loop and put a band around for excess but the cord is actually heavy compared to the lightness of the headphone. Luckily two 3.5 mm cables into a splitter works just fine.
Comfort - 2 - Your mileage may vary if your head is smaller and ears more shallow
Build Quality - 2 - Barely passable especially for a $400 headphone. I'm sure most of the cost went into the driver which I'm somewhat cool with and the price point of $400 is probably a point that they felt they needed to get to. I'd rather have paid $500 with better build and hopefully comfort. Sennheiser Momentum is the level I'd expect at this price point.
Aesthetic: 2 - Purely my opinion but look at their other beautiful headphones.
The Good:
-Sounds amazing. Default signature is a little laid back for my taste. However, I purposely didn't EQ them to see how they sound. It took me about a song and a half before I started to really enjoy them. I've landed on a very slight EQ in the bass and highs. Just a bit of a nudge up for both. Mids are very nice and the highs are really detailed. They even have a plugin for these that brings up the bass a bit from my understanding. Admirable that they all but admitted that they couldn't quite get the sound whee they wanted it with the design limitations and made something to fix it. I EQ just about all of my cans though so it doesn't matter to me. They're mine after all. Sound stage is pretty good too compared to much larger and way more open planars I own. Imaging good as well.
Sound - 5 stars
-Easy to drive - No need for an amp
-Light (but not the cord)
I'm keeping them because they sound so good. However, I'm going to have to make some modifications. The ear pads are detachable but oddly Audeze doesn't offer any other pads for them... so I'll make my own. Headband is also going to get some padding as well. These also look ridiculous on my head. It's like a it's a giant shallow "U" turned upside down on my head without any curvature to the head. Vmoda and Audio Technica do a great job of having way more surface area of the head band in contact with the band ensuring no hot spots.
Audeze should be commended for bringing a portable, easy to drive, and great sounding planar in at a fairly reasonable price. Really nothing out there this small and portable. Not fair to judge these against cans with larger drivers that aren't easy to drive, and not portable. My guess is cost goes towards the drivers and the R&D and not the design and definitely not the materials. I can appreciate that. I wish they looked and felt better but they are headphones after all and what's really important is how they sound. I'll wear them out because at my age I don't care what people think of me.
I'd love to see a closed back version of this. I'd buy that one too even if I have to modify it to make it more comfortable. Charge $500 and change the design a bit. I'll pay it. Heck, put these drivers in a better built headphone and I'll pay $600.
I am, however, going to modify these. It will probably change the sound a bit, but if I want salt on my 5 star chef made meal, I'm putting salt on it... because I paid for them and I want to be happy.
Good with caveats. Great sound with no caveats. Always sacrifices for portability and sensitivity. I'll make the concessions.
Will update with pictures next to the Sony.
Update: 5/30/20 - I ended up returning these. Just couldn't get over the comfort and build issues. I also started to resent the sound. It was like I felt compelled to like the sound because other's like other Audeze headphones. Hifiman HE4XX sound perfect to me with no EQ. Monolith M570 sound perfect to me with no EQ. Even a stock T40rp sounds better than these with no EQ. Some may argue. But I returned these and got a pair of Monolith M565 closed back. I was really after a closed back anyway. Those are head and shoulders more comfortable to me. Sound signature is very similar too. So I just EQ'd those and I'm all good now... at half the price. Those are also easy to drive without an amp. I think I'm done with Audeze unless I find a screaming deal on a used set.
I also contacted Audeze about the pads and they don't offer any options even the pads come off easily. I even asked if I could just buy a bracket to build my own pads and they said they couldn't. I'd save your money and look elsewhere. Heck, buy a pair of Hifiman HE4XX and a pair of Monolith M565C's and you'll still be saving yourself 50 bucks.
