Ilana Griffo is an illustrator with typographic tendencies. She has taught many craft and creative workshops, and as an adjunct professor. In 2011, Ilana launched a stationery line, Sugar & Type, which includes the Rule the World Planner, a weekly planner designed for creative go-getters. She turned her side hustle into a six-figure design studio after leaving her full-time job as an art director in 2015. Ilana lives in Rochester, New York, with her husband, son, and dog.

Ilana Griffo is a best-selling author, and illustrator. Her personality and work process can be described as fast-paced and bursting with creative energy.

Ilana launched her business as a side hustle, first designing a stationery line, Sugar & Type which included hand-drawn cards and the Rule the World Planner, a weekly planner designed for creative go-getters. After leaving her full-time job as an art director in 2015, she quickly grew her side hustle into a six-figure design studio. Her work has been featured on Buzzfeed™ and in various print publications. Ilana is approachable, honest, and sassy; she understands the challenges creative business owners face and is passionate about helping them to achieve their goals and reach their professional dreams.

In addition to serving her own clients, Ilana has served as a Program Director for the upstate New York chapter of AIGA (the American Institute of Graphic Arts) and embraces opportunities to connect with fellow creatives in person and through social media. She teaches workshops throughout upstate New York and has taught as an adjunct instructor at the Rochester Institute of Technology.

Ilana balances sass with sweet; she strongly believes in eating dessert first and always. She lives in Rochester, New York with her bike enthusiast husband, Gregg, son Heath, daughter Zoie, and their two (big) fur babies.

After reading the reviews I felt this was right up my alley and something that I need to grow my business. I'm a new business owner and felt that this workbook will guide me down the correct path and also keep me motivated. This workbook makes you look deeper into your business and help you set personal goals. It's easy to read, enough space for notes and love the quotes b4 each chapter begins.

I’m a motion graphics designer by day and a freelance artist/designer and small business owner by night. I have spent a lot of time an energy over the last couple of years soaking up business advice and marketing insight like a sponge, which has included some exposure to the shenanigans of career coaches and marketing “experts”. I’m not the type to invest in self-help books or fluffy inspiration tools/guides, but I was excited to receive my copy of Mind Your Business in the mail. Its pages provide a great balance of fun and functional, with an aesthetic that feels joyful (I smiled when I opened it up for the first time and saw a handlettered quote from a Jen Gotch) but practical.

Personally, I’m finding that this workbook is an opportunity to brainstorm and reflect without too much pressure. I’m taking to each page with a pen and a commitment to letting my first thoughts flow freely. It can be so hard to commit to ideas about ourselves and our businesses, especially when you’re writing in a beautiful book, but Mind Your Business has a sense of humor that takes some pressure off. This isn’t a rigid business plan— it’s a big collection of pages that encourage you to think and explore freely. As a perfectionist, I find that really exciting.

If you’re the type to get stuck and bogged down by the details, and you need to refocus to push your business to the next level, I can’t recommend this enough.

I love this workbook! Plain and simple. I was getting several orders on social media for my art left and right before I even came up with a business name and logo and taxes and pricing and... it was a lot. I have plenty of books that tell you where to sell your art but do nothing to explain how to tackle the business side. I find it offensive and unnecessary to use swear words in a journal made for all kinds of people to use for business. Call me old fashioned, I don't care. I get it, new generation thinks language doesn't matter in life or business, but I personally think it does.

I am very disappointed. I planned to use it with my entrepreneurial son, who started his business a few years ago at age 8. I thought it would make a great tool to use, but no thanks.

If the swear words were missing it would be a great tool.

I love this book!

First of all, I want to talk about the design: you can see that Ilana is an awesome designer, the book is filled with beautiful hand written quotes which keep you motivated along your journey, I love the choice of neutral and pastel colours and how every chapter has its own colour palette.
But onto the juicy stuff: this is the most complete book I've ever seen related to small and online businesses; I read a few of them in the past but most of the times they just focused on branding OR marketing OR planning, while this book has ALL the aforementioned topics and more! I feel it will become something close to a journal, which I'll need to check out multiple times per day as it's full of handy information.
What I've never found in other books and to be honest I was pleasantly surprised to find it here is "Pricing" and "Legal Stuff" chapters! Obviously they are based on the US laws so if you're a foreigner like me, you will still need to do your research locally regarding the legal counterpart of your business, but still! It gives you so many information about these sort of things which are easily overlooked by a newbie.
So yes, I definitely suggest picking up your copy and be ready for an awesome business year ✨
