Use It on the RangeWarmup mode provides simple feedback such as ball speed, club head speed, tempo, smash factor and estimated distance. Tempo training helps you evaluate which backswing and downswing timings are best for you, and it provides instant feedback. Virtual round allows you to compete and play in a tournament and target practice allows you to work on different parts of your game for short and long drives. |
Use It During Your RoundsOn the course, the launch monitor measures shot distance. For easy access during play, simply press the quick access radar button to open launch monitor functionality. Touch any point on the sunlight-readable display, and it shows the precise distance to that spot — fairway, hazard, landing area or the front, middle and back of the green. It also doubles as a digital scorecard with scoring options for Stroke Play, Stableford, Skins and Match Play with adjustable handicaps. Periodic course map updates are automatically sent to your device. |
PlaysLike DistanceThe PlaysLike Distance feature gives you distances to the target, adjusted for uphill or downhill shots. It is easily turned off for tournament play. PinPointer shows you the green’s location on blind shots. Green View allows you to zoom in on the green to get more accurate yardage to today’s pin location. Big Numbers Mode increases the type, making it easier to read yardage numbers to the front, back and middle of the green. |
Compatible with the Garmin Golf AppApproach G80 works with the free Garmin Golf app, which lets you compete, compare and connect with fellow golfers playing on more than 41,000 courses worldwide. Players can post their results and can compare data, rankings and stats in the app. |

Its a great deal, cant beat it.
Smash factor felt accurate, and I don’t question the speed on club/ball. Roll distance can be fiddled with depending on your tendency, but the carry distance was spot on +-5 yards or so.
The gps is wonderful and works really well. Really enjoyed being able to move the pin around on the digital green, and was provided with multiple yardages around the green. (Front, back, center, and pin)
Excited to use this indoors during the winter. Overall feels worth 375-400 bucks but hey... I’m happy with my purchase overall.
I didn't have a known distance on many of my clubs. I am 54yrs and i have been a single digit for many years, when measured at golf shops I thought my average speed was around 105 and distance was 280yd. I found out unfortunately that it was not.
After a few rounds my driving average was 245yd, and swing speed 97mph. I was still scoring well but I was still a little deflated. I started working out and doing flexibility exercises as well as range work, the launch monitor is amazing the smash factor was key to my success i average 1.41 on smash factor now, swing speed consistently 104-107 mph, driving distance average is 292 on the range. Ive hit it well over 300yds several at times per round and at different elevations and wind conditions. The gps on it plugged in with my averages allows me to play and attack shots with confidence.
Only complaint is that it has no memory or record keeping so i have to write everything down to see my progress and get my averages. I wish it had a computer download app so i could track range vs round averages. Hint hint
Overall best golf gadget buy of my life.
I was WRONG!
While it does have GPS and scorecard, it does not really track detailed stats. If you want to use a device to determine your club distances, this isn't it. You can measure a shot but it will not tie it to a club. There are Garmin forums where these features have been requested but we don't know if they will be implemented.
That being said, this device is great for the range with the radar functions. If I would have known this is what this devices primary function was, I would have gone with the G8 and waited on a more detailed launch monitor.
While at the range, it keeps me focused on practicing my shots, aiming for distances and consistency more than just whacking a few balls out there. The virtual round piece has me using different clubs and trying to improve distance accuracy. For this purpose the device is great!
Another feature that is sorely missing is the tracking of the radar data. It would be nice to have it where I tell it that I am hitting my driver and it stores the data for that club so I can do a better job evaluating what I did at the range. This feature should be for both the GPS and radar side and it isn't.
I have not had any over heating issues like others and I have been out to the range on some very hot days. I do not sit it in direct sunlight so that may help.
After all of this, I will probably keep the device for when I set up a net in the back yard. I will use the GPS on the course and basic scorecard because even in the scorecard it is very basic, doesn't allow to add penalties, just score and putts.

In practice mode there is tempo training, target practice and virtual rounds.
Tempo training allows you to choose swing type and uses audible tones to help you. Pretty useful.
Target Practice allows you to pick yardage targets and play for a score. 3 rings around the pin. 5 shots per target. You can also play 2 players. A lot of fun.
Virtual Round allows you to choose 1 of 41000 course to play. It shows you the overhead of the hole and gives you the yardage. You choose your club and hit the ball. The launch monitor tells you how far the ball went and calculates the distance for you next shot. The next shot into the green is shown landing in the green rolling to the pin. There is three rings, ring 1 +1 stroke, ring 2 +2 strokes and ring 3 +3 strokes. It then calculates your score and you move to the next hole. Can play 2 players. A lot of fun.
The virtual tournament, once paired to your phone through the Garmin app, allows you to play a tournament against other golfers. If you choose to play an existing tournament you play the course the pros are playing that weekend. Your score is posted on the leaderboard.
You can create your own tournament to play with your buddies. (I have not done this). Not sure how well it works.
It only picks up distance. No left or right. You have to use your own sight to see flight of the ball. So you can bounce it off the wall of the dome and it will give you a distance. But consistency is what we are looking for and this helps you with that.
It is a great device for practicing. “If you are going to practice, practice perfect “ I was always told and now I can. And I can’t wait to get to the range again.
Sorry I have no knowledge about the actual GPS part of it as I can’t play outside yet. I am really looking forward to using it. Come on spring.
It appears to have some neat features. The hole shows you the 200, 150 and 100 yard markers. You can mark spots and it shows you where your driving distance would land.
So the Garmin G80 Approach helps makes golfing extra fun.
Scott R.
The battery drops to about 67% after 4 rounds of golf. Each round takes about 3-1/2 to 4 hours.
I don't use the scoring feature and have not tried the swing radar.
I recommend it.
