The Mountain: Ryan Decker, Book 3 Audible Audiobook – Unabridged

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 9,899 ratings

The Wall Street Journal bestselling series

Investigating a missing persons case on Murder Mountain means looking for trouble in a propulsive thriller by the author of The Raid.

When someone disappears on Northern California’s lawless Murder Mountain, it isn’t news. The vast terrain for illegal marijuana harvests is also a notorious black hole for outsiders. But when that someone is the family friend of the persuasive and righteous Senator Steele, finding him becomes covert investigator Ryan Decker’s mission.

For Decker, the risks of infiltrating a multibillion-dollar outlaw industry are greater than he could possibly understand. Especially when that industry has flourished into the profitable backbone of a secretive and influential DC-based think tank. And protecting its untraceable revenue in the Emerald Triangle is a band of ruthless white nationalists.

What begins as a seemingly straightforward favor soon pulls Decker and his partner, Harlow Mackenzie, into a high-stakes conspiracy linked to the most cold-blooded puppet masters and power brokers in the country. The harder Decker and Harlow work to expose the insidious faction, the harder it’ll be to make it out of Murder Mountain alive.

The mountain is for you. At times it was hard to keep, track fo who was 2here doing what to whom—but it sure was interesting!

I alternate between other best-selling authors books and action books like Steve Konkoly writes. These are fun filled stories with interesting plots and some familiar characters.

Try them. You might just get hooked on the action. Never a dull moment.

Very fast read. Decker and Harlow, etc are likable with just enough banter to keep things light. Konkoly is a good author and knows how to keep things interesting. I feel like the story didn't live up to the plot description only because I wanted the Mountain to have more action in it. It was a staging ground but not a lot of fighting on the actual mountain. Intriguing and fun though and I'm looking forward the next book in the series

This book, as were the previous two, is well researched and well written. It moves at a rapid pace and entertains and excites all the way. Just the right amount of twists and turns to keep you yearning for more. A truly fine read!!

Everything I read from this author is excellent. Gripping stories, almost impossible to put down. I can't wait to start the next one!

Decker and crowd are at it again mowing down the bad guys like ducks at a shooting gallery. So if you're looking for instant solutions to unsolvable situations, he's your guy. Notwithstanding that mini critique, The Mountain was more or less fun to read. There wasn't much of a surprise to how the story would end, so that cost it one star. There was the usual mole in the police station. And Decker is still trying to sort out his love life, so there were occasional interruptions in the narrative for that. But there were not a lot of slow moments which results in a four star review from this reader. Predictable but exciting - what more do you expect for four stars. Looking forward to Skystorm - Decker #4.

I found this story easier to follow than some of Konkoly’s. He can lose me when there are layers of interlinked bad guys, although things usually clarify by the end. Here it’s pretty straightforward.

A big Washington linked security firm with a secret dark side has mounted a huge growing operation in northern California’s remote and lawless marijuana lands. The profits will give the company an untraceable source of wealth in the billions with which to fund its secret ops.

It’s a private sector version of the “off the shelf” income source that so preoccupied Bill Casey and Oliver North way back when.

It comes to our characters’ attention when a young man disappears there. His parents are friends of Senator Steele’s. She dispatches Ryan Decker and Harlow Mackenzie on it with unlimited funding.

I like this story. That the United States harbors an area as dangerous as South American or Afghan narco-lands is sobering. Konkoly gives us lots of detail. The West’s wide-open spaces provide endless hiding places for large-scale skulduggery.

The tactical cat and mouse is good, both in the bang-bang and the digital. Decker and another op get into a huge when the bad guys attack their motel.

Much of the story hinges on the electronic measures and countermeasures each side mounts - the great technology the bad guys have the money to institute to protect their investment, versus the gear and ingenuity Decker and his crowd, backed with Steele’s money, bring to bear against it. Anticipating it all is half the battle.

Decker brings all his bad-ass resolve and banter to the table. The supporting cast is entertaining, including Garza, a stone-cold mercenary with a jones for In-and-Out burgers, and Brooklyn, the Israeli girl commando (now a thing in technothrillers) who joins the crew.

"The Mountain" is an action full book with great character development. I also enjoyed the humor added in. It would make a great movie script. Move over Wick, Decker's here!

Ryan and Harlow (and crew) continue to stumble onto evil conspiracies. Lots of action. Lots of thrills. And the good guys, well, they, umm, mostly win. Surprised? If so, I’m surprised you made it through the first two Decker books. I’m not complaining: I want the good guys to win. Every time. And I want to enjoy reading about it. And that’s guaranteed with Steven Konkoly. Now, on to book four, and let’s hope I didn’t jinx myself!

If you like James Bond and things blowing up, you’ll love this book. Decker and the gang are after a major pot operation that turns out to be very well funded.

If you are going to select one series to follow; one that gives you nigh on non-stop action, sarky dialogue, government conspiracies and, of course, more firepower than you can throw a frag grenade at, then you could do a lot worse than to follow Decker and his crew. This is the third book in the series and, having read all three, this is as good as ever. The plots have some real thought behind them; you will not find that in many similar styled series or one offs. The protagonists are likeable. The conversations don’t make you cringe. There’s a lot to be said for such a series.

There are other great books out there of course. All I’d say is that adding this series to your library would be no bad thing.

Ryan Decker is the person to hire to get rid of a problem that most would fear to tackle- ruthless, without conscience, bullying murderers, who enjoy making the innocent suffer. In this story, the job is to locate the son of a friend of the Senator, gone missing in a marijuana growing region where many have gone missing and are never found. Skinheads, cops turning the other way, all in the control of a higher lawless power. The problem for them is that Decker brings the team, bankroll, brains, and firepower to the show to challenge rule by fear. Good character development in this book of the team supporting him. Some explaining to do as the body count becomes difficult not to notice.
