There are even buttons near the space bar that allow you to instantly record a game clip or take a screenshot, which is a cool feature.
But keep in mind that you can use the free xbox app on your smartphone to type with a keyboard in lots of circumstances. The only time you should **really** need a controller chatpad is if you need to type without putting down your controller, so primarily for games with heavy reliance on a text based chat feature. I play a lot of Smite, a moba with cross platform play with PC, which means that a lot of other players don't have voicechat enabled, and since communication is key, being able to type out a quick phrase here and there is immensely helpful.
But if you're not playing a game like this and only want to be able to type out your email address faster, send a PM to a friend over xbox live in between games, or enter a gift card code faster, do you really need this? Like I said previously, a lot of those functions can be achieved by the free xbox app for smartphones.
The chat headset is also 3.5mm compatible and plugs into the chatpad too. There is padded foam on the ear piece which is much better than the basic chat headset that came with the console. One thing to point out is that the keyboard takes the data port so any other devices cannot be used with the chatpad.
On Windows 10, the chatpad works great! I game with a controller on my TV so having a full keyboard is really nice since PC games support key maps. For example, on Fallout 4 the weapon favorite screen a few of the favorites are hotkeyed to the alphanumeric buttons which can be pressed on the chat pad to instantly switch weapons. Pretty cool! Also handy for couch typing.
I took the advice of several reviewers and went with this one because it is made by microsoft which guarantees compatibility and firmware updates. In fact when I first attached it to the controller I did have to go into settings then devices and update the controller to support the chatpad.
Also, an added bonus is that it comes with a headset. It is a standard intro level headset but still offers basic mic functions.
Back to the chatpad though, it is excellent quality. I fact it reminds me of a sturdier version of an og slider phone keyboard with the physical buttons. It is backlit as well and will only light up when you are typing to save on battery life, which it draws directly from the contoller. I highly suggest getting a charging dock as i did and this way you can pay 20$ once and never have to buy batteries again.
This pad also has extra button you can program as shortcut keys.
I personally rather communicate in game through messaging so as expected this ups my gameplay drastically as I can quickly type things out and resume gameplay without much interruption.
Higjly recommend!
The keypad does not obstruct your palms or fingers when holding the controller which was a reservation I had when purchasing. The buttons are clicky and tactile, however they are somewhat small and close together which can make fast typing a little sloppy. The keypad also packs some extra functionality with the "X1" and "X2" buttons providing ease of access to the screenshot and record functions as well as volume control and mute buttons on the right side.
The headset is cheap and flimsy but gets the job done if you have nothing else. However, xbox one controllers are fitted with a 3.5mm headphone jack which can fit any normal pair of headphones or earbuds. I have a pair of Samsung earbuds that I plug into my controller and use for voice chat. They also put out in-game sound as well as chat so you can play with your tv on mute which is a little known life-hack.
Overall, the bundle is great value for someone who really wants the keypad for easy typing and wouldn't mind a basic, average sounding headset for casual gaming.
