Before I got my Paw Plunger, the routine was to fill a plastic wash basin with warm, semi-soapy water, don rubber gloves, then take rags and painstakingly wipe all twelve paws off as best I could. This process typically had to be done two, three or even four times a day! The amount of effort involved and the number of dirty rags I had to launder was beyond ridiculous. Sometimes, I was able to dip their paws in the basin itself. Clearly, this was a far more effective technique, but my dogs absolutely hated me doing it. So that was a procedure I only resorted to when their paws were incredibly filthy.
I knew there had to be a better method, and I often wondered about something kind of like the Paw Plunger. Thank Heavens someone not only wondered, but developed a product and included features that had never even crossed my mind!
So, how good is the Paw Plunger, you are wondering. Well, in a word, it's FANTASTIC! To quote another reviewer, I wish I would have been using this long ago. Simply put, the Paw Plunger is quick, thorough, effective, self contained and well constructed. Also, It's as easy to use as one could ever hope for. Short of teaching your dogs how to bathe themselves, I don't think a better solution is going to come along.
The brushes on the inside are very effective at removing dirt from the pads, between the pads, and even under their nails! Occasionally, there is a form of very fine sticky mud that doesn't want to come completely off, but 96% of the time, this is not the case. When I first started using it, I COULD NOT BELIEVE how much dirt was coming off my dogs paws! It made me realize that over the years, in spite of my best efforts, much of the dirt was getting left behind. Probably just long enough to end up in the carpets. :( Also, I have been especially surprised at how much fine sand and silt gets removed.
Now, let me mention a couple of other things you might find helpful; First, I was unsure how the Medium Paw Plunger I purchased would work for me since my two German Shepherds and the Black Lab/English Pointer mix weigh 87, 65 and 53 pounds respectively. Answer: Perfectly. Yes, it is a closer fit for the large dog, but his paw still goes in without discomfort. For the smaller guy, I just work the Plunger a little closer to his pads to provide good scrubbing power. Next, a lot of people ask about dew claws. All my dogs have their dew claws and the only thing is with the Large male, I need to watch as his paw enters to avoid catching his dew claw. Once he is all the way in, there is no issue. And frankly, this is not a big deal as long as you are mindful of it. I also wondered if I would have to change the water between dogs. My experience has been that even when they are really dirty, the reservoir is large enough to let me wash all three dogs without transferring dirt from one to the next. But you definitely want to change between sessions. At least in my situation.
I have found it helpful to spread a beach towel out for them to stand on. This keeps their dirty feet off the floor before I wash them, and helps further dry them after the wash and dry process is done.
The flaps at the top do a marvelous job of preventing water from sloshing out. And afterwards, the Plunger is a snap to empty, rinse out and have ready for the next session.
This little gadget does cost a few bucks, but it is SO worth it. After all, what is your inconvenience, laundering, and clean floors worth to you? :)
Finally, do the dogs like it? Well, it kind of depends on their mood. Sometimes they stand there calm and quiet, while other times they do try to avoid bath time. Just like kids, huh? But I often give them a piece of a biscuit during the process and this has seemed to help them accept the new routine a lot better.
Good luck and rest assured, there is now a better way! 💡🙂
.
The trick is to train them to be still while you dip their paws in the unit. I dip, squeeze the excess water from his paw and have the towel ready to dry, and he is such a good boy that he even turns around and lifts his back legs up for me..BUT...!
I can totally see the reviews in regards to it being too heavy and hard to use, because it really is! My wife and sister (when she watches the dogs) will not use it, they both say that it is too heavy and cumbersome for them. I just muscle through it and call it good.
I have since took the idea and made my own, lighter and smaller version that will work for my Jack Russell as well.
GREAT!!! idea, just needs some tweaking. If you don't mind a little work it really is better then standing there for 10 mins cleaning mud from between their toes when this does it in a few secs. In the summer it doesn't get used because the garden hose is WAY easier.
Hope this helps!
This thing really works! I've had a bunch of people ask me about it (I posted an endorsement on FaceBook a few weeks ago) and some folks say "Why not just use a bucket and a towel?". Well, let me tell you why...
First of all, the Paw Plunger has an "aperture" seal on the top, that keeps most of the water inside the receptacle.
Secondly, it has scrubby brushes inside to remove grit, salt, dirt, etc. Does your bucket have these?
Thirdly, the handle on the side is very useful - instead of just dipping a dirty paw into a bucket of water, something that even the most chillaxin' pooch might have a problem with, you just hold the dog's paw and leg stationary, and move the Paw Plunger up and down via the handle. Genius!
In case you doubt how effective this can be, here's a photo of the water after one walk when it wasn't even that messy outside...
All in all, and especially for the price, get this thing! It really works, is inexpensive, is well-built and solves a lot of the problems when you have dogs that go outside. We fill it with warm water in the front bathroom, put the top on it, and place it outside our entry door in the hallway along with a "dog towel" when we are heading outside. Then when we come back home, we clean up in the hallway outside our apartment, before even coming inside, then come inside and dump the dirty water in the toilet. This works GREAT!
Regarding the size, as stated above, we have two 35 pound dogs. The medium is PLENTY big and almost too big. It's nice to have a large volume of water, but the unit is so large that I need to swirl the dog's paws around a bit to contact all portions of their paws. I fear a small would be too small.
