Now, about the cherries themselves. They are packaged in a plastic bag which is prominently labelled, No Added Sugar. The only ingredients are tart cherries and sunflower oil. We know tart cherries are good for us, which is one of the reasons we go out of our way to buy them, but what about sunflower oil? Not so good. It is high in omega six fatty acids which, unfortunately, we already get too much of in our diet. We want more omega 3 fatty acids and less omega six. The purpose of these oils is to keep the cherries from sticking together and they succeed reasonably well in doing that.
I am now looking carefully at a small pile of the cherries on my desk next to the keyboard for this computer. They look exactly like raisins; that is, small, dark, and shriveled up. Now I am chewing them and they taste like a dry, tart cherry, which I like. I put the cherries in my morning cereal and also drop a few in my cup of hot green tea. They don't plump up much in the tea and not at all in the bowl of cold cereal. Added to hot oatmeal and then allowed to sit over night, they do plump up a bit.
I would like it better if the producers of these cherries were able to find a healthier oil to us than sunflower oil, but I don't think the little sunflower oil that I am ingesting with these cherries is a problem. Readers of this review who disagree, might leave a comment. The important thing for me is NO SUGAR. Have readers of this review noticed how difficult it is to buy packaged goods that don't have sugar added to them?
For the time being, until I find a healthier alternative, I will stick with the Country Spoon tart cherries.
Update: The cherries in my last batch are small and hard. I just got off the phone with a Country Spoon rep who told me that my latest order was end of the season cherries. This is May; he tells me I should get larger and moister cherries by the end of June. I won't be reordering until then.
6/30/16 I have ordered my 7th bag or maybe 8th bag of these cherries. I keep them double bagged in the fridge. From the 1st bag to the 5th bag they are the same quality and there is hardly any oil. Even after soaking them in warm water there is very little oily residue. I have 2 unopened bags in the fridge so I don't run out.
Was I pleased? You must try it, if you are a jam maker. I have a Ball’s automatic jam/jelly maker which is the easiest way to make small amounts, 4 half pints with a tad left over, of jam or jelly. Perfect for a small family. They are sold here at Amazon. I reconstituted ½ pound of these tart cherries , added them to a 12 oz. bag of frozen, unsweetened bing cherries and the result was the best cherry jam I have ever had. While the Ball jam/jelly maker makes 2 pints at a time, the entire process takes half an hour, and I can be doing something else while it does all the stirring and clock watching.
