Things We Do in the Dark: A Novel Hardcover – July 19, 2022
Purchase options and add-ons
"Propulsive and chilling." --People Magazine
"An intoxicating thrill ride. Hillier jams her foot on the accelerator and never lets up." --New York Times Book Review
Things We Do in the Dark is a brilliant new thriller from Jennifer Hillier, the award-winning author of the breakout novels Little Secrets and Jar of Hearts. Paris Peralta is suspected of killing her celebrity husband, and her long-hidden past now threatens to destroy her future.
When Paris Peralta is arrested in her own bathroom―covered in blood, holding a straight razor, her celebrity husband dead in the bathtub behind her―she knows she'll be charged with murder. But as bad as this looks, it's not what worries her the most. With the unwanted media attention now surrounding her, it's only a matter of time before someone from her long hidden past recognizes her and destroys the new life she's worked so hard to build, along with any chance of a future.
Twenty-five years earlier, Ruby Reyes, known as the Ice Queen, was convicted of a similar murder in a trial that riveted Canada in the early nineties. Reyes knows who Paris really is, and when she's unexpectedly released from prison, she threatens to expose all of Paris's secrets. Left with no other choice, Paris must finally confront the dark past she escaped, once and for all.
Because the only thing worse than a murder charge are two murder charges.

It had many twists and turns.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this unique story.
If you like a good triller this book is for you!
A very twisted ride that kept me engaged throughout the entire book!
I could not turn the pages fast enough! This book is filled with twists and turns and I loved every second of it!
You know a book has you hooked when you are thinking about it when your not reading it and can’t get back to reading it quick enough! Well, this is that book!
Jennifer Hillier knows how to draw you in and keep you hooked!
Well done! No spoilers with my review! This is a must read!
Starting off with a dead celebrity in his bathtub and his much younger wife, Paris being arrested for his possible murder had me hooked from page 1.
While being held to be brought to charges, Paris is nervous that someone from her previous life will come forward and destroy her new life. What is she running from? I couldn’t wait to find out.
The story is broken up in 6 parts. In one of the next parts we get Drew Malcolm, journalist turned podcaster who discusses true crime cases. Hes getting ready to do a season dedicated to “The Ice Queen” Ruby Reyes who is back in the headlines for her pending release from prison after her murder conviction. Drew has a connection with Ruby’s case because he was best friends with Ruby’s daughter, Joey.
Now, we have Joey. We learn her gut wrenching childhood with her abusive mother, both physically and emotionally. Her story is truly heartbreaking. You know those kids who don’t even stand a chance in life from the moment they are born because of their parents? Thats Joey’s story. Joey has a tragic end to her story when she died in a house fire at age 20. Her life truly made me cry.
Come back today, now that Ruby is getting out, she’s blackmailing Paris. How could these 2 women be connected if Ruby has been locked up for 25 years? What could Ruby possibly have on Paris to blackmail her? And is this what Paris is running away from ?
What a page turner the final parts came to be! The storytelling and connecting factors are so well laid out to be so intriguing that it kept me trying to connect the dots, but when it came out, it took a turn i didn’t see coming. Truly mind blown. I was not expecting the connection between Joey, Paris, Ruby and Drew and to say the twists kept coming and coming would be an understatement.
The entire book, while parts were heartbreaking, it was compelling in the best ways. What a captivating thriller by an outstanding author. Jennifer Hillier can write great page turning thrillers.

Halfway through the book i knew what was going to happen. Let's be honest, if you introduce 2 main characters in the story in different timeline, they are the same person in most cases. Author tried to keep it like a BIG SECRET that will be revealed like a HUGE plot twist. Tried to introduce 1-2 smaller plot twists in second half but they were inconsequential to the overall plot... might as well have skipped it and saved 100 pages. I finished it because I was looking for a book where i dont have to use too many brain cells.
Have I ever rated a book by Jennifer Hillier with less than 4 stars?
The answer is no!
And why, I hear you ask ...?
Because she's bloody brilliant! That’s why!
I honestly loved every part of this thriller!
This is the story of Paris who is found one morning with a bloody knife in her hand next to her famous dead husband! What an opening scene! I was immediately drawn into the story as I tried to figure out whether Paris might be guilty or not. At one stage I suspected every character in the book.
Then the book takes a sudden turn. Paris receives a letter from a woman who is about to be released after serving 25 years for murder. What is the connection between these two women? As the story rolls back 25 years, we begin to see parts of the bigger picture.
This reminded me very much of Jar of Hearts by the same author, so if you loved that book, you can’t go wrong with this one.
Now I’m ready to start on Hillier’s backlist!
I dare say there aren’t many good things we do in the dark and that is definitely true in this story. Paris Peralta is arrested for the murder of her comedian husband. Things look bad, obviously, but Paris is more worried about someone from her past recognising her and destroying everything she’s worked for. Especially Ruby Reyes, currently serving a prison term for murder. She knows who Paris really is and when she’s unexpectedly released from prison, she threatens to reveal all of Paris’s secrets unless she’s paid good money.
Once you start reading, it really doesn’t take a genius to figure out how the two storylines are connected. Did I care? Nope. Because there is always something entirely engrossing and absorbing about the way Hillier writes that it feels almost impossible to physically let go of the book you’re holding. ‘The Things We Do In The Dark‘ is told through various parts and other than part one, which deals with Paris’s arrest, I really don’t feel I can talk about any of it for fear of spoilers. Except to say that the parts dealing with the past were by far some of my favourites.
I had a difficult time with Paris. I didn’t particularly like her or, even worse, care about her predicament. Furthermore, I again didn’t really think it took much brain energy to realise what happened to her husband. Did I care? Also nope. The supporting cast mostly got on my nerves, except for a character called Drew, who turns out to be far more instrumental than I anticipated. He was someone I felt sorry for, carrying around a lot of guilt because of something he had zero influence over.
This story is definitely addictive. Even when you know what’s coming, it’s always nice to discover you were right. It’s often slightly uncomfortable to read. Not to worry, it never goes into all the dirty details but your imagination will still fill in the blanks just fine. But what was undoubtedly missing was tension and suspense. Entertaining but missing the thrill in thriller. And despite the fact that I didn’t mind the predictability, I suppose somewhere deep down I was hoping for something that would at some point rock my socks off but it never really came.
I’m a huge fan of Jennifer Hillier’s books and I absolutely loved her previous one, ‘Little Secrets‘. It’s quite possible the next one was always going to struggle a little bit since my expectations were sky high. ‘The Things We Do In The Dark‘ left me somewhat conflicted. I very much enjoyed it but I expected more. I really liked it but I didn’t love it. If you use star ratings, it’s that difference between 4 stars and 5. Great, yet lacking that certain something that makes it awesome. That said, still a fan and I’ll definitely be at the front of the line when Jennifer Hillier drops her next book.
