Product Description
This clean, simple, military-inspired Timex Expedition Camper watch hasn't changed much since 1918. We made it a little lighter, added a nylon Fast Wrap strap with Velcro fastener, and our signature Indiglo night-light.

- 40mm wide or less for the case and low profile
- analog display
- doesn’t look ugly
- water resistant to 100M so I can swim with it
- cheap enough I won’t care if a lose it or break it.
This was basically the only watch that met all of that criteria. The most difficult thing was to find a 40mm or less analog watch for cheap that could go to 100M eliminated almost every watch except this one. This is a big deal because anything less means you really shouldn’t take it swimming or in the shower. I will say, for a dirt cheap watch, it looks pretty good – something I couldn’t say about other analog sport watches in this price range. It looks better in person than in the photo.
Here’s what I like: It looks decently good. You could wear it as an everyday watch and not get funny looks unless you are the type to wear a suit to work. It’s lightweight so doing sports or swimming with it is easy as it doesn’t throw off balance at all, nor does it flop around on your wrist from the weight. The nylon strap was something I was initially concerned about because these kinds of straps wear out FAST. But this one is actually half leather (on the back) and half nylon (on the outside; the visible part). Over the past month and a half it has held up VERY well so I don’t really have any concerns about this wearing out any faster than any other band. The leather backing also makes it more comfortable than a regular nylon watch. The dial is extremely high contrast and VERY easy to read at a quick glance. The hands do not glow in the dark, but even better, it has indiglo if you push in the crown so the whole face lights up blue in the dark. The back of the case uses four tiny screws, so no need to take it into a store to have the battery replaced.
Here’s what I don’t like: The glass is actually acrylic so over time it WILL scratch just like the glass on any digital watch. That said, this watch was $25 so can I REALLY complain about that? Not really. And the acrylic does help make the watch very light weight which is something I like. The other thing is that it’s a pretty loud watch “tick tock tick tock!” This is due to the acrylic glass and plastic body. If you keep it on a nightstand right next to your head, you’ll hear it all night long. I keep it in an open drawer of my nightstand and I generally don’t hear it. But just be forewarned, it will probably be the loudest watch you ever buy.
Overall, I’m EXTREMELY happy with this purchase. If I lose this thing, I will buy another without a doubt.
+++++++++++++++FIVE YEAR UPDATE:++++++++++++++++
Well, I’ve now had this thing for over five years. It’s done a TON of woodworking, hard yardwork (including chainsaw work), a ton of bike rides, hikes, camping, etc. Whenever I have been concerned about scratching a watch, this is the one I’ve worn. I love it more now than I did when I bought it. The acrylic glass has held up surprisingly well. I bought one of these for my son in preschool and he played with it in a sandbox and scratched it up good. I was able to buff it out very quickly with 1000grit, 2000grit, and then toothpaste and it was good as new. My watch hasn’t needed any touchups. Are there scratches? Yes, but they are all very very fine and you don’t notice unless you look closely. The watch case is similar – if you look very closely you can see some very light wear, but you have to look closely. Overall, I’m very impressed with the cosmetic durability considering what I do with this watch.
That said, I almost lost this watch camping right at the five year mark. The watch strap started to fail right at the pin. To be fair, that’s five years and I’ve had leather straps on watches give up the ghost far sooner so I am impressed with the strap. I replace it with a black nato which I wanted to do for this very reason long ago, but I liked the included strap so I never did it. Nato straps are good for watches that see a lot of hard activity because they don’t rely on both pins, so in a catastrophic failure the watch stays on your wrist and just flops around. If you do get a NATO strap, be aware that there’s not a ton of clearance between the pin and the case so some straps might not fit easily if they are fairly thick – so avoid any strap that boasts about their thickness. Gotta say though, it looks darn good with a black nato with polished buckles.
Honestly, I would wear this watch more often as an occasional daily wearer if it were not for the fact that my daily wearer in an automatic and if I don’t wear that thing for two days I have to reset the time, which I don’t like doing. Aside from the low profile, weight, comfort, water resistance, etc. the thing that I truly love about this watch is how easy it is to very quickly read the time with a quick glance. When I’m on my bike or exercising or doing various things I often want to check the time, but can’t sit there staring at my watch. I want to get a 0.1 second glance and be able to read the time. I can do that with this watch.
When I bought this watch five years ago it was $25. Today it’s $42. If I lost this watch today I would absolutely pay $42 to replace it.

When I bought this watch five years ago it was $25. Today it’s $42. If I lost this watch today I would absolutely pay $42 to replace it.
I've owned in the last 5 years, an old casio digital, an MDC Infantry ($25), and now this. Casio sucked because of watch band. MDC felt great initially, its a bit big, but felt substantial. However, it wasn't easy to read, the luminos hands barely were wide enough. It also wasnt waterproof enough even to go in the bath, and what's worse, the dial started to rotate. So when the battery died, I took the super comfortable NATO strap off it, and ordered this one.
I was a bit surprised about the lack of weight and size, but it's fine. I LOVE the Indiglo, and it appears to be much more waterproof that the Infantry. The downsides, the lens is PLASTIC, and feels cheap. The numbers could be clearer. I live by the 24 hour clock, but I don't need to be told in miniscule letters that 1 is 13... etc.
This works.
Now make no mistake - this is not at all comparable to a $500 wonder watch. To compare it to a higher end wristwatch would be unfair. No, this is a very simple watch. The design is such that I think even having the date on it is a bit fancy. The watch exists to tell you what time it is, and to be light and convenient enough so you don't think about it when you're wearing it. I love it precisely because it is inexpensive and simple.
To be sure, my choices came down to this watch and the Casio Forester - and since the prices were right I bought both. I figure my son will more than likely lose at least one watch during his adventures, and happily the price points on these are low enough where you kind of (but only kind of) don't mind. My son says the Timex is somewhat easier to read. He wears this watch more than the Forester for that reason.
The band is easy to put on and take off, as it's Velcro and not a traditional buckle. Since I want my son to get in the habit of wearing this thing when he's out of the house (really, it does no good to tell him to be back home by six if he doesn't have a watch....), having an easy-to-wear band is crucial.
Indiglo lighting is fantastic on this - it's not so bright that it's blinding you, but rather just the right luminescence to illuminate the watch face. Important in, say, a tent in the wee small hours.
This works. it keeps good time and supports my son's Scouting activities. We are both rather happy with it.
Top reviews from other countries
smooth, and low profile. Comfortable nylon hook & loop strap with elastics to hold the watch pins. Easily goes down a sleeve without getting caught on the fabric. Easy to read face, glowing hands, and very bright Indiglo. Great little watch.
I wanted to use it for a short while before reviewing it,
It lights up well and is easy to read.
It is waterproof and stood up well in a swimming pool.
I will use it for my holiday scruff watch as well.
I prefer material straps for everyday watches.
The strap on this watch is okay. If I wore the watch 24/7 I am sure it would last a good while.
I take it off when I am not working so it is unlikely to last as long .
It is a little fiddly getting the strap through the strap but that is done to me putting it on and taking it off so much .
Its a good watch and I am pleased with it
