Works great to not off dust and light dirt prior to daily wear. Works best on a treated leather. If you need to aggressively clean your leather this is likely not the brush you need. Too soft for aggressive cleaning
I have been using Kiwi brushes for over fifty years and have yet to see one with bristles breaking free from the wood or even shed other than one or two that may fall out when you first unwrap it. One company that focuses mainly on the equestrain trade (I forget the company name) makes brushes just as good in a number of sizes but they're typically (or used to be) significantly more expensive and no better. So, stick with Kiwi is my advice.
Here's a tip for you, if you polish both light and dark color shoes after a every dozen uses dampen a rag with Laquer Thinner, buff the rag, turn the rag and buff some more, and so on until the color stops coming out of the brush. That way you can use the brush on multiple colors of shoes without the residue from darkest polish you use occasionally coming out of the brush and streaking a lighter color. Be SURE to let the brush sit a half hour or so after cleaning before you use it though, otherwise there's a slim chance some of the Thinner will not have evaporated out of the horsehair.
As for something other than horsehair, what, are you crazy? "Like, gag me with a spoon" is the only thing that fist that idea.
