The inside is smaller than you think.

The inside is smaller than you think.
The insulation is thick and the cooler is tough. The problem is that it approaches a full size cooler outer dimension with a small picnic cooler inner dimension. In almost every circumstance where you would have room to bring this cooler somewhere, you could also bring the 65qt cooler and have room for more ice and more food. I happened to end up with both sizes and I have them pictured. Unless you are storing your cooler in a place that just doesnt have room for the 65 qt cooler, then I would bring that one. Even without being full of ice, the 65 qt cooler maintained a temperature of 36 degrees in a basket in the top of the cooler (the warmest part of the cooler). I'm sure the 45 qt would have done the same. I just wouldn't expect it to last as long, because there is room for more ice in the bigger cooler. When I bought them both, there was only around a $30 difference between the two ($250 or $280), so I would spend the extra few dollars for the larger cooler. I also highly recommend the basket on the top for anything stored in paper, or cardboard (like butter amd eggs) and the cutting board divider. They are both great.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great cooler! (updates)
Reviewed in the United States on October 24, 2016
Highly impressed with the RTIC 45. First off, ordered the 45 and 20 on a Monday afternoon and received them Tuesday morning. Coolers both look great, no discernible difference in appearance or build quality between these and the Yetis.

The big question is how does it hold ice? The answer is great. The 45 has had ice in it going on day 4 now. Not sure if the 20 will go as long, but mine has done very well even while being constantly opened and closed.

I was torn between the 45 and the 65. After carrying the 45 filled with ice, I'm glad I didn't go bigger!

Attached pic is from today, after a few days, in and out grabbing water, adding new water, and sitting in the back of my truck.

Update: I've had both the 20 and 45 for about two months now and have used them both quite a bit traveling and during hunting season. Five observations so far:

1. The 20 doesn't hold ice as long as the larger 45. Kind of expected though, and it still holds ice worlds longer than the Igloo cube it replaced. The Igloo didn't last a day and I get 3, maybe 4 days out of the 20. I'm happy with that.
2. The lid doesn't always want to stay open. Somewhat annoying at first but I've gotten used to it.
3. I haven't had the issue, but have seen complaints about condensation around the drain plug. The drain plug is not insulated, and a quick fix is shoving a wine cork into there. It fits perfectly and effectively insulates the drain plug.
4. The 45 is a great performer. I'm constantly impressed with ice retention. Loaded, it is quite heavy to carry solo.
5. What I'm not impressed with is what they did with their warranty. They changed overnight without notice from 7 years to 30 days. I really like the product, but probably wouldn't have bought knowing that. The two I have so far give every appearance that I won't have any issues, but I'm a little wary now.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent cooler for the money.
Reviewed in the United States on February 19, 2017
I have gone through a lot of coolers. Many coolers crack on the sides or edges. Some have the lids warp after a time in the sun (spent three days fishing and the 100 Qt cooler lid warped). A 190 pound guy cannot sit on most coolers without some creak or crack of dissent from the cooler (even with a cushion on top). I was looking for a better cooler and when this went on sale, I bought one. Now I wish i bought both the 65 and 45.

The cooler arrived quickly. It was well finished on all six sides and smooth and shiny on the inside. There were no signs of imperfection, no extra insulation around the feet. There were no imperfections or bubbles from the molding process. The production was good, with no scarring from any finish work or buffing. The cooler was clean. The seal was well fitted and connected. The lid stays up by itself. The drain plug hole was finished well. I stood on top of it, bounced a few times (my 190 pounds), and it was sturdy. Tried the lid up and down and could feel the seal causing extra effort to lift the lid initially. Now I have a cooler that could be a seat, step, stool, or casting platform instead of just a cooler (limited space on a boat). The drain plug has a foam pad on the inside.

Update - Ice lasted 10 days. No condensation around drain plug. Temperatures outside 60 to 78 degrees. Lid seal works well, a little effort to open. I love it. I bought the basket and divider from RTIC. Both fit well. The divider will work as a bait board and cutting board. Ready for fishing season.
