Fast forward a few years, after the DLC was released, I decided to give it another chance. This time I picked up the PS5 version (which you get for free for getting the PS4 version), and OMG... what a game. I can't even begin to describe the depth of the game, only that I put over 120 hours into one play through and I still didn't get to everything. There are so many play styles supported... so many weapons for different kinds of playing. And who knew that Keanu could act? The story is really, really good. So is the voice acting. The missions range from amazing to just OK, but there are so many amazing ones, that I treated the OK ones as practice. There are a ton of different endings depending on player choices, but with strategic saves you can see all of them without having to do a new game. Combat is amazing; when you get into your style it is certainly a power fantasy running around, dominating the field.
Oh... and there was a point after I got better at the vehicle controls (the vehicle controls are atrocious, but at some point it stops mattering) I found myself driving from place to place on a motorcycle, lane splitting, running lights, just at high speed instead of using the insta-travel kiosks... I still miss it.
Oh... the bugs... there are lots of them. They're all annoying. But I didn't run into any that broke my play. The game is so good I'm going to overlook them, but even at this point it will crash, secondary features will stop working (requiring a game restart) or very occasionally a new version will leave you with a missing equipped item or two.
I've done all the endings but the secret ending... my main character did not handle some dialog correctly and I don't have access to it. Maybe I'll do another play through...
Notice also how the majority of 1 star ratings are from Dec. 10th, which was launch day--those who bailed on day 1 gave up way too soon. By later that same day, CD Projekt Red had already released Update 1.04, which fixed a lot of the worst bugs. Now a week later, they've already released Update 1.05, which fixes even more problems.
I have 60 hours logged on this game already--on a base PS4 bought in 2015--and have only encountered funny glitches, the kind any fan of open world games has already seen and lived with for years in Elder Scrolls, Fallout, and Assassin's Creed games. Cyberpunk 2077 also gives you a ton of auto-save and quick-save slots along with unlimited manual saves, so it is easy to have plenty of fallback points if you need to do a reload (isn't that what any open world RPG gamer already does anyway?).
One game comes to mind as deserving this kind of response, and it isn't Cyberpunk 2077. It's We Happy Few. If anyone reading this followed that debacle, CP2077 is not broken the way that game is. It just has some hiccups every once awhile, but nothing a quick reload won't fix, especially as the developer keeps churning out massive updates.
As for the graphics, it still does look beautiful on a base PS4. Those saying it looks like a PS3 or worse game are greatly exaggerating. I can understand why--CD Projekt Red should not have made it seem like the images in their advertisements were from last-gen consoles when they were all from high-end PCs. Still, the game looks great even if not as good as on next-gen and PCs.
In the early hours of the game, my only criticisms were that it is full of open world and cyberpunk cliches that hinder its originality. But once I hit around 10 to 15 hours, I realized there is a lot more to the game's mechanics and story than the opening imply. CP2077 does hit its own stride after hitting you over the head with "look how cyberpunk" in its opening hours.
I'm loving this game, and since I'm on winter break and recovering from oral surgery, I'm really glad I didn't have to wait. If you've been able to live with glitches in your massively open world games in the past, you'll know how to make the best of this fantastic game.
Top reviews from other countries
Even though there are some bugs, this game isn't all that bad. The graphics are amazing and the controls are awesome. I definitely recommend this game to all open world enjoyers.
Do note; this game IS NOT FOR KIDS. There is very intense nudity and sex (uncensored). Some of the scenes aren't shippable. If you do buy this for your kid, there is an option to disable nudity.
All in all, great game!
