We have never had a president like Donald Trump.

Some say he is our best president ever. Others say he is the absolute worst.

Some look to him as a savior figure, while others compare him to the antichrist.

Some say that, as Christians, we must support this pro-life, pro-family, pro-Christian president. Others say that by standing with him, we have destroyed our Christian witness.

How do we sort this out? Did God specially raise up Donald Trump to be president? Are Christians called to vote for him, or should they vote him out of office?

In this unique book, based on his wide-ranging reading and research, Dr. Michael Brown presents both the pro-Trump and anti-Trump positions, laying out the challenges we must face if we are to pass the Trump Test.

Review

Dr. Michael Brown is one of the most sophisticated Trump supporters among evangelical Christian leaders. As a Trump voter himself, he has laid out the evangelical case for Trump and the evangelical case against Trump. He assesses President Trump's tenure carefully, with appropriate approval and necessary critique, ultimately calling Christians to put allegiance to the Lord above all else. This is essential reading for those who want to face America's spiritual, moral and political crisis as the November election looms. --James A. Beverley, Associate Director, Institute for the Study of American Religion, Woodway, TX

With all the sound and fury from always-Trump people and anti-Trump people I have looked for a voice that reflects my views, a spiritual voice, a reasonable voice and sober voice. I have found that voice in the writing of Dr. Mike Brown on President Trump. He is the one person I recommend without reservation. Read his book to gain a solid perspective. --Daniel Juster, Director, Tikkun International

Evangelicals at the Crossroads, Will we Pass the Trump Test?
This is the title of Mike Brown's new book. It is the best I have seen on Evangelicals and the issue of voting for Donald Trump. Before Mike wrote this, I wrote a long post as a final word on my concerns and ultimately why I come down on voting for Trump but with reservations. I mentioned four categories of people who are pro and anti Trump among believers in Yeshua. Now Dr. Brown has written a powerful summary. Here is what he covers and with brilliance and perception.
    1. The case for voting for Donald Trump.
    2. The prophetic words and Donald Trump
    3. The importance of speaking the truth on the destructive aspects of Donald Trump and not buying into silence as a means of support as if these matters are not important.
    4. Keeping a right heart and balance so that politics and patriotism does not become idolatry. The central focus reaming Yeshua, repentance and revival.
    5. Staying godly and keeping friendships with believers who disagree if they are willing. Our unity in Yeshua is more important than even the national issues before us.
    6. Why we are called to political responsibility and cultural influence but not to make this the center focus of our lives.

I could say more but there is no book on Trump with which I more agree. I have had friends upset with me for being for Trump even with my qualifications. Other friends have been upset with me for calling out the destructive things Trump does as hurting the cause of our culture battles. Mike argues that if we do not call him out on the destructive things, we hurt the cause of the Gospel. I have friends who have been anti-Trump but agree that I have some good arguments. I don't know why but these folks are rare. They do exist. It seems that few anti-Trump people are given to solid reasoning on the issues, but seem blinded by their antipathy to Trump.

I can not recommend this book too highly. Somehow when Brown deals with an issue he is able to provide thorough research and also is able to provide prophetic insight and power. Please get this book. Also available electronically. Daniel Juster, Restoration from Zion

Fluff abounds. Opinions, founded and unfounded, proliferate. Most adult United States citizens hold deep convictions regarding which political party’s candidate is needed for our country to become what we desire. The level of verbosity and incivility is wearying. Into the milieu comes a book of wisdom and honest analysis that is targeted to Christ followers. Others could read it and would benefit. First things are kept as first things. Incivility between Christ followers is addressed head on.

While this book is an important read it is not a surface discussion. Whether your political leanings are blue or red or colorless Michael’s arguments are timely and appropriate.

The U.S. Social scene has become horrible since Dr. Brown released this book. January 2020 Examples don’t apply in September.
But he’s right. We’re not voting for a pastor of a church. Chuck Colson said - Jesus will not return riding in Air Force One.
Unchanged is this “what are you voting FOR ?” Bible doctrines and God’s Covenants, or not?

Dr. Brown is an easy to read book with all sides, including God's, of the topic presented fairly. This book will make you either think or rethink about your views & encourage you to have a heart that loves God first & your nation second. I was certainly influenced by what Dr. Brown wrote & urge you to read this book with an open heart.

The actual Trump Test is revealed in Chapter 17 as the conclusion of this book. It is the best part of the book! I heartily agree with what author Michael Brown expounds on are “Ten Essential Keys for Passing the Trump Test.” These keys are (to paraphrase), (1) cross before flag; (2) Trump is our president, not our savior; (3) Spiritual activity must have greater emphasis than political activity; (4) Don’t get caught up in election fever; (5) Do not justify carnality and unchristian behavior; (6) We must regain our prophetic voice; (7) Christians are to be holistic in pursuing justice and righteousness; (8) Christians should walk in love toward those who vilify and oppose us; (9) Christians are to unite around Jesus rather than divide over Trump; (10) Christians must lead the nation in repentance to open the way for revival.

The sixteen prior chapters are in a sense a dialogue between the arguments of Never Trumpers and Trump supporters of various stripes. To his credit, Brown makes an effort to express common arguments of both polarities. His audience are white evangelical Christians who continue to be Trump’s most potent voting bloc.
In an earlier book, “Donald Trump is Not My Savior,” (which I have written a review), Michael Brown shares his journey from being an opponent of Trump during the 2016 Republican primaries to eventually voting for him in large part because he detested the idea of Hillary Clinton as president. This latter book is a redundancy of his earlier book other than Brown has had more time to apprise the current Trump presidency and critics and supporters.

Brown zeroes in on several key public policy issues that he claims are central to evangelical Christians. I assume “white” evangelicals, as he does not mention black evangelicals who have some different key issues. Brown’s main issues seem to be, (1) Court appointees (especially Supreme Court) that will support religious freedom; (2) combatting LGBTQ overreach; (3) prolife stand against abortion; (4) strong support for the nation Israel and establishing an embassy in Jerusalem; (5) Combatting Islamic extremism. Here and there, Brown expresses concern about creeping socialism. He lauds Trump’s buildup of the U.S. military, and that Trump is trying to rein in illegal immigration and the wall might be okay, and agrees with Trump on bailing out of the international Iraq nuclear disarmament deal.

Brown gives much space for critics of Trump’s character to complain. Brown agrees with them. Yet throughout, Brown concludes that Trump’s policies that fulfill the evangelical Christian bucket list outweigh his horrendous character. In other words, a quid pro quo. Emperor Constantine in the early 4th Century CE gave Christianity favored status and protection, for which the Church apparently overlooked his unsavory past. And ever since, Christendom has fought the wars of kings, overlooked the oppression of the weak and poor, while enjoying a large share of political and economic power of the governing class.

Brown gives space for Lance Wallnau and Jeremiah Johnson who prophesied that God rose Trump up to be “a wrecking ball” and a “chaos president” to shake America up and return it to a moral base. They got the first part right, the wrecking and chaos. Yet the Bible more often portrays God raising up a ruler to judge His people. Rather than Trump “Making America Great Again,” God may be using Trump as an instrument of His judgment to humble and break America. The prophets did not laud the Assyrians or Babylonians as they devastated Israel, even as they said that Israel deserved it.

Likely most of the readers of the book will be conservatives. Too often Brown prejudices the reader by prefacing a quote by naming the person as liberal or progressive. Importantly to me as I read the book (and the previous book), I looked in vain for any significant treatment of human-caused climate change. If climate change will be as serious as most accredited climate scientists say, it will be the utmost prolife issue as the earth becomes difficult to deadly for people to live upon. Ezekiel warned of those who sleep when the watchman trumpets that the enemy is approaching (Ezekiel 33:1-9) and those false prophets who say all is well when God’s judgment (flaunting His creation order) is upon (Ezekiel 13:1-16).

I normally don't recommend political books, but this is a must-read! Whether you are Pro-Trump or Never-Trump this book will speak to you.

Dr. Brown is fair and balanced as he examines both sides of the aisle. His goal is not to try to persuade persons to become Pro-Trump or Never-Trump but to show that even though we might have political differences we can have unity through the Gospel of Jesus.

This book is both challenging and encouraging!

Very lucid and unbiased account of the influence and implications of a Trump Presidency in America. It clarifies in many ways the conundrum for Christians faced with an election involving Donald Trump. However, it clarifies the possibility of upholding Christian values while disagreeing with the way in which Trump behaves and still voting for him.
