There is so much to like about this product! The optics are great, I had no trouble setting it up. Thanks to another review on Amazon by “MH”who discussed potential issues between house Wi-Fi and Swarovski Wi-Fi I had no trouble at all setting up. I spent most of today testing the camera component out in different light conditions: first, practicing on a feeding station at my house where the light is good; later out in the woods. I was very happy with the quality of the photos I got after practicing. I think my good Cannon camera with a zoom lens is more consistently sharp but I think that’s a matter of my shooting technique on my first day. The fact that the Swarovski is one very light and compact unit that shares to my cell phone in the field rather than me juggling my binoculars, and my camera is quite a bonus. Merlin correctly ID’d all the clear photos, with only one misidentification of a blurry (my fault) photo of a female cardinal. Another absolutely fantastic feature is that the product can be synced with five different electronic items. I synced it with my husband’s iphone as well as my own and I was absolutely delighted at how well it works. I can’t wait to sync it with a couple of grandchildren’s iPhones so they can follow along with me out on hikes. This was my first day with my Swarovski optik DG and I will update this review as I travel to other places and test Merlin on more challenging smaller birds.

The product's optics are excellent. It takes clear pictures as advertised. The biggest challenge with the product is a cumbersome setup process to connect the device to your mobile phone that is poorly explained. The customer support offered is poor. It took over a week to get an email response from the manufacturer and that response didn't address the problem. I called the customer service line and the person told me I needed to update the firmware, but he didn't know how to help me do that. The device doesn't connect to your mobile phone via Bluetooth technology. It uses WiFi and requires firmware to be transferred from the device to your mobile phone.

Here is the fix they couldn't offer: First download the dG app. Once you are in the app, it will walk you through a setup process, but will most likely leave you with a message that your phone cannot connect to the device. The firmware loading process doesn't work unless you first temporarily disable your mobile phone's cellular data connection and you instruct your mobile phone to forget any WiFi connection you are connected to when trying to load the firmware from the device to your mobile phone. This will allow your phone to connect to the device's WiFi connection and download the firmware. Once you have done this, you can restore your regular WiFi and cellular data connections. The device should work as promised after that is all completed.

The focus for the pictures is a bit touchy, but it is quite useful to get to ID birds along with Cornell's Merlin software and bird guide

MH wrote an incredibly helpful review that I feel compelled to speak to a little more. First, thank you MH, whoever you are.

The dG is an incredible piece of equipment. I believe most “blur” issues are a problem when adjusting the diopter, and I don’t have enough experience with the monocular to speak well of it yet. Except to say we have no issues. The issue that you will run into, nearly guaranteed, is a problem connecting your iPhone for the first time to the dG. A very basic first step, and Swarovski fails miserably at explaining it. For such an expensive item you would think this would be much easier to work or at least they could afford stellar customer service. Nope.

In short, what needs to be done after you have downloaded the dG app is to turn off your cellular data. You do this on iPhones by swapping to the middle of the screen from the upper right hand corner and clicking “off” the radio antenna icon, not the Bluetooth icon. Leave WiFi on. Same thing can be done in settings. That is really all you need to do. That easy. Once you connect you can download the firmware, which it will ask automatically. Downloading the firmware takes a while and your iPhone may time out (disconnect). Don’t worry, just select reconnect when it presents itself and it will continue the download from where it left off.

MH also claims that you’ll need to “forget” your previous WiFi but I didn’t find this necessary. If you have problems, then I would suggest you follow MH’s instructions, but turning off cellular data fixed my problem. As soon as you connect you can switch cellular data back on if you wish. It doesn’t effect connection with the dG once it is active.

Pain in the backside to figure it out initially, and I wish there was more out there identifying the issue. Ironically took a review from Amazon (MH) to finally figure it out.

The optical elements are terrific, bright and sharp and easy to focus and use. The idea of making a photo and connecting to the Merlin Bird app is excellent. The WiFi interface with a phone is a bit awkward but it works as does the Merlin connection. However, despite the online instructions, we could not get an in-focus image from the camera. We contacted customer support and were told that person who answered was unable to help but that we would called by technician. The call never came. It is too expensive to keep without the working camera.

Terrific device. The USBc cable provided was bum, but otherwise a powerful lens, camera, and interface to the Merlin birding app.

As per another reviewer it takes out of focus images that makes it unusable. I wrongly assumed that the other reviewer maybe did something wrong so I went ahead and bought it locally in South Africa.
I read the instructions carefully and followed the Svarovski problem solving steps without any success. I then tested it in a studio environment and clearly the autofocus functionality does not work as it should. It sometimes gets the focus right and most other times not.
I am returning it for a refund.
