With over 3 million copies sold around the world, Graeme Base’s amazing alliterative alphabet book Animalia is one of the most beloved children’s picture books of all time, treasured by children and parents alike as a special reading experience.

“So extraordinary, so extravagantly illustrated, so astonishingly alliterative, so thoroughly delightful that any child who does not soon possess it may rightly feel his education has been shamefully neglected.” —San Francisco Chronicle

Animalia’s incredible imaginary world intrigues readers of all ages, with hidden objects and ideas on every page.
  • A is for an Armored Armadillo Avoiding an Angry Alligator
  • B is for Beautiful Blue Butterflies Basking by a Babbling Brook
  • C is for Crafty Crimson Cats Carefully Catching Crusty Crayfish
  • And the rest of the alphabet is just as much fun!
Graeme Base’s work offers a color-packed palette and imagination-filled menagerie that has changed the way that children’s books are illustrated. Animalia, like many of Base’s books, is a vast puzzle, built with color and filled with creatures. This astonishingly original treatment of the ABCs changed the way parents and teachers imagined the books that they read to children.

Base offers a single- or double-page kaleidoscopic illustration for each letter of the alphabet and challenges the reader to find as many words beginning with that letter as possible within. Each illustration is a visual feast, and a fun way to challenge and expand your child’s vocabulary.

No parent or child will ever be disappointed in getting Graeme Base’s
Animalia as a gift. Its colors and humor are timeless. You will smile, giggle, and laugh when reading about “Horrible Hairy Hogs Hurrying Homewards on Heavily Harnessed Horse.”

Note: This is the “midi” edition of
Animalia, perfect for smaller hands and bookshelf storage.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

What's this elaborate illustration? "Horrible Hairy Hogs Hurrying Homewards on Heavily Harnessed Horses," of course. Graeme Base's astonishingly creative oeuvre begins with Animalia, the 1993 alphabet book that challenges the standard idea of how long reading a book for small kids ought to take. Animalia, like many of Base's books, is a vast puzzle, built with entrancing pictures that unfold into layers and layers of objects--all matched to each page's corresponding letter. Base leaves us stunned and amazed, painting reflections into the oddest surfaces and driving the urge to page-turn. This wonderful picture book works for 2-year-olds, 5-year-olds, and adults alike--something few other alphabet books can manage. --Andrew Bartlett

You've got to get this book if you have a child in your life !
I saw this book at a friends and had to get it for my grandson ! The pictures are fantastic and the alliteration is superb . I mean " Diabolical dragons daintily devouring delicious delicacies " ! It just doesn't get any better than that ! It's the ABC'S presented in a way that would make any child want to read !

First off, our family LOVES anything Graeme Base, this book does not disappoint. The rich illustrations, the vocabulary, the hidden pictures (What else can you find that starts with L?), the alliteration... all of it is here. A child can spend hours on this book, and it's a great way to spend time with the kids. His books offer much for a reluctant readers.

Second, I was looking for the 25th anniversary edition online and somehow happened upon this listing (I didn't find it through Amazon search engine). The listing didn't mention the book being 25th Anniversary Edition, but I bought it (for much cheaper than anywhere else online) because the picture showed the 25th Anniversary Edition. It arrived today and I was thrilled that it was indeed the anniversary edition. This particular edition comes with a poster on the inside of the jacket "that holds a riddle to be solved."

As a side note, I saw this book at a local big box book store and was very disappointed in cover of the paperback. It looked like a poor photocopy. So, if you're trying to decide between paperback and hardcover, I would recommend hardcover... and buy it now while the 25th Edition is still being sold (look at the picture, you'll see "25th Anniversary Edition" at the top of the cover if it is).

Also, in regards to the negative reviews.... I use anything that shocks me as a teachable moment with my child. How can I teach them to deal with the emotions associated with being exposed to something unusual? There is no doubt in my mind that my children are exposed to so many things that I would prefer them not to be exposed to on a daily basis. I don't set out to shelter them from these things, but offer advice and talk about the 'weird' things we see and that happen to us on a daily basis. It is our job as parents to prepare our kids for the Big World out there. Trust me, this book will not harm your child... get it.

I'm giving these to some little cousins, and was so glad to be able to find the original size. I was all ready to purchase the paperback, when I happened to read that it was much reduced in size. That wouldn't be such a bad thing for little hands, but when the quality of the print and legibility suffer, that's not so great. My only quibble with this purchase was with how Amazon packed the books. They were just tossed in a paper box, no padding, no protection, and on a day when we got nearly 3 inches of rain. I'm glad I heard the drop off and got outside to rescue the box before it got soaked (through no fault of the delivery driver).

I loved this book as a child. I pored over each detail of the intricate imagery, discovering something new each time. If I saw something I didn't know what it was, I'd go figure it out. So not only was this book entertaining, but it was also educational too. Decades later, after having children of my own, I sought to find this book again for them. My current 2.5 year old loves this book as well for the same reasons. It is a timeless addition to any book collection and I would recommend it to anyone with children.

I am obsessed with Graeme Base's books. I don't have kids of my own, but have now purchased this book and the Eleventh Hour for friends' kids as his books are one of the lasting memories I have from early childhood reading. When I've bought these recently to gift, I found myself cracking open the pages myself to preview and having my interests reignited. His works are simply magical. I think I may pick one up for myself as a childless adult :).

As to this book itself, I just gifted Animalia to a 6 year old this past Christmas. I gave him the Eleventh Hour last year. His parents told me he loved the Eleventh Hour, and this year upon receiving this, I thoroughly enjoyed watching him go over each page.. reading it to himself (he's an advanced reader) with his dad's help for some of the new larger vocab (like "diabolical" and "improvising"). He's definitely a bright kid, so I think how wonderful to introduce him to all these new words! And the pages are just so rich with detail... he was enjoying himself at finding the hidden little Graemes on every page and the additional letter-appropriate images (like a "hummingbird" and "hyena!").

Love it. For those who are worried about content or things like a swastika on the S page... I have no memory of negative thoughts from reading this as a child and also the swastika is a revered, holy symbol for many religions like Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism. It's a shame to have the nazi association, but first, little kids would not even know what it is, and second, if they do, this kind of teaching moment is really useful I think.

I've loved this book since I was a kid and been so happy to share it with my friends' kids as they grow up. I must have bought a dozen copies, because I remember so vividly how gigantic the pages seemed when I was 3 or 4, looking through the pages and becoming completely engrossed in the scenes. "C" is definitely my favorite because my name starts with C, but the book overall is just enchanting, and even in the past few years as I've re-read it I've seen new things I never noticed before for each letter. Will say there are a few obviously Australian terms but overall translates very easily to American English and brings me joy every time I open it.

I bought this book years ago, when it was first published & kept it for myself, to pull out when needed. The alphabet has no better friend than this authour; the descriptions, the illustrations, the use of colour, the tiny surprises hidden like gems among the larger illustrations are absolute delights. I want to cut out every page & have them framed - but this is not practical & would be hideously expensive. This book demands to be read aloud, preferably to someone nestled beside you, someone who loves the role of listener & pointer-out-er of each lovely animal/creature. So I bought this new copy as a gift for the youngest & dearest person in my life, with great hopes that she will love it too.
