Making cucumber salad, an apple tart or a potato gratin? Try the OXO Good Grips Hand-Held Mandoline. Use the soft knob to simply adjust to the desired slice thickness, and slide the food over the stainless steel blade for perfect, even slices. A clear surface shows slices accumulating below. In the past we have tried a few different expensive mandolins. They were awkward to use, difficult to set the thickness and have it stay there. In turn we threw each one away. That said, we have some experience with this category of kitchen tool. This OXO slicer is a dream to use. It is easy to adjust and very easy to use and to clean up. When it is set to a certain thickness, it stays in that setting. Like all the OXO brand tools that we have, this one is well designed and well made. I would definitely buy it again. Id does come with a safety grip for holding the material to be sliced.

I had seen "mandolin slicers" advertised for many years - including demonstrations in supermarkets and on TV - but I had never purchased one. I finally gave in and bought another model. While it did performed as advertised, it was fairly large, and had several pieces (which needed to be disassembled and cleaned after each use). It was just too much effort to use just to get a few slices of onion or tomato for a sand which. When I saw the Oxo Good Grips model, however, it appeared to be small, uncomplicated, and easy to use and to store - so I decided to give it a try. It is much more convenient - it stores easily in my drawer and it's easy to clean - and I'm very happy with it. I have only 2 criticisms (which is the reason for 4 stars rather than 5.) First, even at the thickest slice setting, the slices are too thin. I prefer a larger slice of tomato or cucumber than this device allows. Second, and more importantly, it's just a little too narrow. Unless the vegetable can fit between the lateral guides, the vegetable cannot be properly sliced - and a large tomato or onion will not fit! I have to cut a piece off the side of the vegetable before I can get it between the lateral guides, which makes its use more cumbersome and ruins the aesthetics of the tomato slices. They can keep it the same length, but it should have been 1-inch wider. Anyway, it's convenient, it works well, and it's easy to clean - and so I use it in preference to the other "mandolin slicer" which I had purchased previously.

It almost isn't worth writing a review for this because there are so many other glowing reviews. But I needed a mandoline that was small (storage issues at our house), but that could easily cut vegetables for lunch. Clean-up and safety were important too. I just threw it into the dishwasher, so clean-up was easy. And (so far) I haven't cut myself.

The need for a mandoline became strong when I found this recipe for cinnamon rolls into which you put thinly sliced apples. The apples make it look like a rose. This mandoline made the perfect thinly sliced apples ... but then I burned the whole thing. Which wasn't the mandoline's fault, so I didn't deduct any stars!

My husband says that mandolines always work well when their blades are sharp. I will update this review if it dulls quickly.

 Super compact for storage. Easily adjust for different thickness. Stores with blade totally depressed for safety. The item holder also locked in place for storage.

2 minor issues with it. It's not super wide so very wide. Vegetables like eggplant occasionally don't fit. Also, the spikes on the vegetable holder are not that deep so sometimes it's hard to keep a vegetable in place but I've adjusted my technique.

Despite cooking for many years, I either avoided recipes requiring thinly sliced vegetables or made do using a sharp knife and tolerating inconsistent sizes. I won't tell you that you need to get the Oxo brand version, but it is a good implementation of a fantastic concept for a kitchen gadget. I don't mind slicing things for food prep with a knife--I have a nice chef's knife, I even think it's kind of fun. But this gadget is so incredibly fast, and gives you perfectly consistent cuts with optionality over thickness. And it's *easier* to clean up, since you don't a big cutting board that's awkward to clean since it's bigger than the sink. And then it stores away easily, it's barely bigger than a chef's knife.

It is crazy good for slicing potatoes, and also works with more oddly shaped things, like mushrooms. The grooves do a good job of keep the food stable while you pass back and forth over the blade. The "gripper" also works well as a safe way to holding the food you're slicing in place. I do like to get the slicing started by hand, but I'm very mindful of the peril of the blade, I switch to the gripper after a few passes.
