This tool is very easy to use and figure out (just watch the you-tube videos if you are not sure.
It is well constructed, sturdy, and appears to be a well thought out design. It is exactly what I like in a tool... well designed, well constructed, easy to use, and with infinite uses. I will be using this on many projects to come, it has almost endless applications to those of us who like tight, well attached joints (using screws that are hidden) which are easy to build and secure, without making intricate, complicated wood-working joints using routers and lots of glue. Sometimes you just want the finished product asap, and hidden fasteners, without stressing about hardware-free professional joints. This tool is well worth the price for a durable and handy jig.
I like the attachable boxes that come with it. A handy place to keep the screws and accessories.
It came with Kreg screws, but for my project I just used square-drive backer-board screws of appropriate length and size.
I used the Kreg Jig to drill pocket holes into shelving that was installed in a bathroom cabinet, to create heavy-duty shelves that will hold heavy liquid dispensers (cleaners, shampoos, etc.). By putting pocket holes under the ends of the shelves it created hidden but extremely secure permanent attachment for the shelves. Simple, but strong.
I also used the jig to drill pocket holes into the square seat frame board of old oak dining chairs that I am refinishing and re-upolstering. The jig allowed me to make them secure and tight after many years of use (they were getting loose, with the pegged and glued joints coming apart). This worked very well and did not require taking the chair completely apart. I used large clamps to clamp the chair joints back into place tightly. I took the screw guide out of the jig and clamped it tightly in the inside of the seat boards at a slight upward angle so I could get my driver into position (it would not fit horizontally inside the chair frame. It was then simple to run the bit into the guide on each inside corner, then drive the screws into the pocket holes to securely tighten the joints. These holes are then hidden under the chair when the corner angle supports are replaced under the seat and the seat-top cushions put back into place.
The jig gave me a very easy solution to the problem of fixing these old antique chairs without trying to totally take them apart and rebuild them.
The only tricky thing to using the Kreg jig is making sure you are setting the pocket tool to the right height to match the thickness of your wood material and the depth you want the screw to penetrate the piece you are attaching it too. I highly recommend using a scrap piece of your material to drill some sample holes, and then screw in the screws you are using to make sure the angle and penetration depth are right for the project that you are doing and that you are using the right screws for the job. This makes sure the jig is set up right before you do some permanent drilling.
I recommend this tool if you want to create boxes, furniture, cabinets, shelves and make well-fastened joints with the fasteners hidden. Or if you are repairing old wood joints. Overall a very Nice Job Kreg! I have become a pocket-hole convert.
Better than k4:
The clamping system allows the user to not only move more easily between boards of different thicknesses, but also feels much more secure than the k4. The clamping system is also located in a more convenient place on the user side of the jig, rather than the opposite side like on the k4. The k5 also comes with two extension wings the attach with tapered dove tails from the top. While these extensions feel slightly flimsy, they add a lot of support to the workpiece, and open for light storage which i use to store pencils and the other for the drill bit. The k5 is also much thicker and wider than the k4 giving it a more substantial feel.
Falls behind the k4:
The k4 had a great feature in which the way to adjust the bit for different thicknesses was milled directly into the body of the jig which was very quick and convenient. The k5 however has a seperate flimsy plastic piece that you place on the bed of he jig and drop your bit through the guide to adjust the bit hight. I have no idea why they did this. It's annoying to have to use a seperate piece when there is more than enough room to use the existing method on a wider base. The dust collection attachment is another area that could use improvement. While the swivel feature is nice, every time i attach and remove the dust collection, the swivel breaks off. The only thing holding it on are very tiny plastic tabs that let go literally every single time I use it. Not just when I detach it, but while i’m using it.
I would like to see a solid piece that works in a single direction, but can be flipped to work in both directions.
If you are looking for a pocket hole jig, this is absolutely the one to go for. Even with the slight short comings, the good outweighs the bad. This does accept drill guides from other generation jigs, the micro drill guide, the kreg HD, and the new kreg plug cutter with no attachments or adjustments.
I bought the Kreg single pocket hole (clamp-on) jig and albeit an extremely useful tool as well, it requires a ton of work to position, clamp then drill (then repeat) when building things that require multiple pocket holes in succession.
Holy cow this awesome little guy makes ANY pocket hole drilling almost fun! It’s incredibly easy to use and is so well thought out with little depth guides and such that it’s virtually fool proof.
I mounted mine to a work bench and it has made my life so much easier and enjoyable when I need one or many pocket holes.
The best thing is that with the depth guide you won’t drill a hole too deep. It’s always to the perfect depth.
I held off on this tool for probably a year because I thought the price was a little steep but finally took the plunge and oh my god... so worth it.
The only part of the tool that’s a little on the flimbsy side is the shop vac hose port. After it fell off (or unsnapped) a couple of times I realized my shop vac hose would fit into the larger opening where the flimbsy plastic piece attaches. (See photo). With the vac setup this way there is absolutely NO saw dust left behind which is so nice as drilling pocket holes does create quite a bit of saw dust.
I would recommend this product all day every day. A must for a woodworking shop.
