But then, I turned the thing on. Wow.
Even at full price, this TV has a screen and features that rival even some of the most expensive TV's. The off-axis viewing is impressive, especially for a cramped studio apartment, where perfect seating for everyone just isn't possible.
The colors and saturation look great out of the box and the gaming mode performs impressively well with an Xbox.
All of our streaming subscriptions are available in the Fire TV App Store, making it easy to set up viewing without an antenna or cable - though those options are easily available through the Fire TV interface. Best of all - no external media streamer required. It's all built-in to the TV.
PRO TIP: Download the Fire TV app for iOS or Android. It makes entering strong passwords much easier, especially when you're setting up a dozen apps.
The speakers are very good, though we don't use it much since we purchased a sound bar.
Overall, I'm very happy with this purchase. Hopefully our current TV at home will last a long time, but should it die, a Fire TV will be at the top of my list to replace it.
!!ATTENTION FOR 4K GAMERS!!
I play 4k games on my xbox one S. Out of the box the picture quality on this tv for my 4k games were atrocious. After some tinkering around with the picture settings, I FINALLY FOUND HOW TO MAKE 4K LOOK GOOD. Mess with all the dials all you want for your own custom fit. BUT. The important thing is to go to the picture setting > advanced settings > HDMI Input Mode> and change it from 'Auto' TO either 'mode 1 or 2'. This will significantly improve your 4k image with your 4k compatible gaming console and games. This is a MUST DO!!
After reading some reviews I was kinda iffy. But now that I have tested it out myself, I would say that some one star reviews are user error or unfortunate accidents out-of both parties control.
Regular price $319.99. Bought it on Prime Day for $219.99. I updated my original review after using it for almost 2 months.
Pros: It's a smart TV at a great price on sale. The picture and sound are both very good. The TV looks about as good as any TV of this size. And the legs are very stable though it was a bit difficult to get the screws in since they are a little short.
Cons: The Fire TV operating system isn't great. When I first got the TV, whenever I would turn it on it would start at the home screen, not the channel that I was watching when I turned it off. Very irritating! I figured there was a setting somewhere to change that but after spending quite a bit of time looking for it I gave up. I went to Best Buy, since it is their brand, and ask them about it. It took 3 people to find the setting. That tells me it is in the wrong place. There have been other things about the operating system that are not very intuitive also.
The biggest con of this TV though is the remote control. It is the worst remote control that I've ever used. It is very poorly designed. The rounded back makes it slide around in your hand as you press buttons. It's hard to tell if it is the right direction in your hand because it feels the same either way. There is no back lighting so it's hard to easily know what buttons you are pressing if the room is dark. It has limited functionality as well. There is no number pad so you can't go directly to a channel. You have to use a menu to access many of the functions I would expect on the remote. If it is hooked up to cable then you can use that remote instead.
Rating: I give this TV a 4 star rating only because the picture and sound are very good at the sale price. I wound not pay anything close to full price though. There are TV's with better operating systems and much better remotes at the $319.99 price.
