Kiss Her Goodbye (A Fourth Dimension Thriller Book 1) Kindle Edition

3.9 3.9 out of 5 stars 157 ratings

INCLUDES A NEW AFTERWORD BY THE AUTHOR ABOUT THE MAKING OF THE CBS TELEVISION PILOT!

“Kiss Her Goodbye is a smashing good read. It moves at such a breakneck pace that you'll scarcely have time to take a breath.”
—Tess Gerritsen, New York Times bestselling author of The Mephisto Club

In a gripping thriller that matches one cop’s love for his only daughter against the diabolical cunning of a charismatic madman, debut novelist Robert Gregory Browne announces his presence in territory long ruled by the likes of Dean Koontz and John Sandford

ATF Agent Jack Donovan has two ambitions: take down cult leader Alex Gunderson after years of violent mayhem, and reconnect with his daughter Jessie, who has somehow managed to slip from his life. But, none of Jack's experience as a stellar cop or an absent father has prepared him for the unthinkable way these two parts of his life are about to collide.

In a desperate act of revenge, Gunderson kidnaps Jessie and buries her alive. But just as Jack’s team is closing in, fate intervenes in the form of a bullet and the secret to Jessie’s location is lost. With only a few precious hours of oxygen to sustain her, and with not a single clue pointing in her direction, Jessie is sure to die—unless Jack can somehow find her. Jack would trade anything in the world for just one shot to save his little girl—even his own life.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Provocative violence, a colorful Chicago background and a dollop of the supernatural lift Browne's debut thriller. ATF agent Jack Donovan almost captures his nemesis, ruthless gangster Alex Gunderson, during a bank robbery. Gunderson's amoral pregnant wife, Sara, is shot in the ensuing chase, leaving her in a coma. Gunderson seeks revenge by kidnapping Donovan's teenage daughter, Jessica, and burying her in a coffin with enough air for three days. As the tension builds, a vainglorious Chicago cop shoots the kidnapper, who dies without revealing Jessica's whereabouts. Browne's experience as a screenwriter shows as he shorthands the parallels between the anarchic Gunderson and straight-arrow Donovan, both of whom are single-minded and personally loyal. Elements of the supernatural, including out-of-body experiences, provide humorous relief from the breathtaking pace. (Feb.)

I picked up this book because it was written by Robert Gregory Browne; I had not read anything about it, but loving how this author writes, I knew it would be great! I was not disappointed! I love a good "cop story", I love action, I love memorable characters, and I loved that I found this story so wonderfully unpredictable! I would've probably railroaded through this nail-biter in one sitting, but I lost my Kindle for an agonizing 24hrs. Once back in my hands, the "plunge into darkness" took place in the storyline, and I was happily immersed and invested in this story and spent the rest of the day reading the rest of the book without pause. Browne masterfully fooled my brain's conclusions quite a few times, and I couldn't be happier! Fantastic ride! Thank you, RGB!!!! 5 stars and then some! I'd encourage everyone to take this book for a spin without reading anything about the content - you'll be happy you did! Get it!

The book was great. Kept you, on your toes. It was a different feel than other thrillers, in that you don't spend your time trying to figure out who did it. We already know that. What you do spend your time doing is holding your breath, & cringing as the protagonist, makes crazy decision after crazy decision. Like I said it keeps you on your toes. It did drag on a bit, but I did like knowing the back story to certain characters. So all in all I would absolutely recommend.

The idea of a race to save a loved one who has been buried alive certainly isn't a new one, but the author is a good story teller and hooked me early.

The action starts fast and doesn't let up until the midway point. That's where he started to lose me. It was like a different writer stepped in with a supernatural angle. Pacing changed, and the ending was a let down.

The author certainly has skills and I will try another of his books. I just hope he picks a genre and stays with it

This book blew me away! So well written and thought out! Story line amazing and characters so interesting. There is suspense, thrills, some paranormal, a touch of romance, and a surprise ending. Oh.....and FBI, Police, and ATF! What more could you want? Robert Gregory Browne is going on my Pinterest board of "Favorite Mystery and Thriller Authors". I'm definitely going to be buying more of his books......hope you do also.

Wanted to read RGB since reading Poe and have been a huge fan of Brett Battles so I was really looking forward to RGB. Kiss Her Goodbye was fast paced, well written and I loved the other world twist. My first RGB read was Trial Junkies which I did not like so it was with some hesitation that I read this book but he gets so many good reviews that I wanted to give his work a second chance. I'm very glad I did and while I'll probably stay away from the Trial Junkies series, I will read more Browne.

I know I'm coming into the party late, that the book has been out for awhile but nevertheless... Truly enjoyed this novel, so much so that I used it as my reward for chores. If I find a book that holds my attention, that I don't want to put aside, I use it as an incentive to force myself to do things I don't like to do. Once I started Kiss Her Goodbye, I knew I'd found my reward program for the day. Read a bit, go do a load of laundry, reward myself afterward with two chapters. Need to load the dishwasher after dinner, reward with four chapters. (Hey, cooking dinner and doing dishes is worth more than a load of laundry!) Thanks for the entertainment, Rob. I look forward to my next Browne reward novel!

As I read this book, I was more and more impressed at the imaginative complexity and depth of this story. I was filled with admiration for the talent of an author that could create such a plot. It was daring, engrossing, suspenseful! I have definitely found a new author to follow, I thought breathlessly, as I eagerly raced toward the conclusion. The "ending" was very satisfying and it tied up all the elements of the plot in a
way that made all of the belief-suspension that had been necessary well worth it. But wait a minute! Then I read the REAL ending: a final, misguided, cheesy, sell-out add-on that ruined everything! It was like throwing a big plop of cow dung in the shining snow. I won't say more in case someone out there decides to read this book, but take my advice and DON'T DO IT! It is rare for me to write a review, but I am so disgusted that I just had to let it out. I would like to email the author and be more detailed about why this ending was so disappointing and spirit crushing, but his website, it seems, has been hacked and therefore is down.

I bought this book after reading the exciting sample chapter, but after reading a few more chapters I lost interest and ended up fairly disappointed. The characters were unrelatable and the dialogue was too simple for my liking. Not the crime-thriller that I expected it would be.

Fab book. Really enjoyed. It's one of those where you want to finish so you know what happens but when you do finish you wonder: Erm, what am I supposed to do now? Easy answer. Buy the next book. Off to do that now. Thanks for a great read!
