While on a walking holiday through the beautiful, deserted hills of Crete, Nicola Ferris stumbles across a critically injured Englishman, guarded by a fierce Greek. Nicola cannot abandon them and so sets off on a perilous search for their lost companion - all the while being pursued by someone who wants to make sure none of them leave the island . . .
When the big white bird flew suddenly up among the glossy leaves and the lemon flowers, and wheeled into the mountain, I followed it.

Review
"Don't miss her ever." —Boston Globe
"Mary Stewart has moved forward quietly to take the chair of romantic mystery so long held by Daphne du Maurier. . . . Her reputation has grown . . . on the regular appearance of one good book after another, each with a characteristic mixture of eerie memories of past tragedy, star-crossed love, danger and the vivid evocation of exotic landscape."—Houston Post
"Don't wait for a rainy day to curl up with Mary Stewart." —Sandra Brown
"A master craftsman." —Richmond News Leader
From the Inside Flap

Warned to stay away, Nicola was unable to obey. And before she realized what she had uncovered, she found herself thrust into the midst of an alarming plot in which she would become the prey . . . .
"Here is magical writing . . . . A story of breathless excitement . . . seasoned with spirit and humor." -- Los Angeles Times

About the author
Lady Mary Stewart, born Mary Florence Elinor Rainbow, was a popular English novelist, and taught at the school of John Norquay elementary for 30 to 35 years.
She was one of the most widely read fiction writers of our time. The author of twenty novels, a volume of poetry, and three books for young readers, she was admired for both her contemporary stories of romantic suspense and her historical novels. Born in England, she lived for many years in Scotland, spending time between Edinburgh and the West Highlands. Mary Stewart's legacy as an author is vast. She is considered by many to be the mother of the modern romantic suspense novel. She was among the first to integrate mystery and love story, seamlessly blending the two elements in such a way that each strengthens the other.

For me it was a pleasurable reread of an old friend. I remembered almost nothing from the first read 40 years ago. The heroine of the story was an English girl named Nicola. See works in a minor capacity at the British Embassy in Athens. She and her cousin Frances agree to meet for a holiday in a small town on the Isle of Crete.
You can tell that this was written in a kinder, gentler time because I can't imagine a 22 year old girl today would be safe wondering around on Crete all alone.
Nicola decides to take a trek into the mountains before heading for the small town of Athos Georgios where her cousin will be joining her in a few days. Mary Stewart paints a glorious picture of the scenery. Her words bring out the beauty of Crete.
While on her wondering through the countryside, she stumbles across a wounded man and his companion with a strange story to tell. She helps the wounded man, Mark, a fellow Englishman, while he tells her how he ended up with the bullet hole. Suddenly Crete doesn't seem that safe after all and the tiny town where she and her cousin will be staying suddenly seems dangerous.
That is as far as I go into the story without divulging the rest of the story which the reader needs to discover for themselves. This book is fascinating, exciting and so worth reading. Enjoy!!!
This is an adventure set on the Greek island of Crete, and has all the mystery, danger and romance you could ask for. It was written in the 50s or early 60s, so the slang will be unfamiliar, and it has a refreshing innocence that is completely missing in novels written in today's times.
Results: rereading this was so much fun. I'm sure that it would be enjoyable for new readers as well. It's a timeless classic, I believe. And there is no gratuitous sex, no foul language, and no explicit violence. Try it, I think you'll like it.
