Product Description
Reliable digital technology by HAKKO – Introducing the HAKKO FX-888D Excellent thermal recovery Heater output has been increased by 30% compared to that of the conventional models HAKKO 936·937. Also FX-888D delivers excellent thermal recovery by using T18 series tips for their terrific heat conductivity. This allows soldering at a lower set temperature and reducing the thermal impact on components as well as tip oxidation that can shorten tip life. Thermal recovery graph Rise time to 350Degree C is 20 seconds faster and tip temperature drop is reduced during continuous work.

I've had this nearly a year now, and it is SO nice to use.
My ONLY complaint is the sponge. It has these weird cuts in it (not the slots). The slots in the sponge are OK, but the near ends are where that will wear out. The weird cutting of the sponge (half circles off the slots), I don't get. The dampened sponge is a little softer than I'd like, but this is a very minor issue. To be clear, I haven't bothered to find a better sponge yet, but when it wears out, I'll find something more suitable.
Tip for sponges - you want it wet all the way through (at the least, to expand and stay put in the holder), but wring / squeeze out excess until JUST damp. Too much water will shock the tip and draw out heat, too little will allow the iron to burn the sponge. Re-dampen as needed.
That said, nothing else comes close for the money. Tip holds heat well, power is more than adequate, got an assorted set of Hakko tips, good quality.
A tip for your tips: always wipe and add fresh solder BEFORE returning to the holder, then wipe and add fresh when removing to use. I still have a 30 year old 25W Radio Shack iron I was using until this (it actually worked better than others I tried over the years), original tip, and while certainly not used for production, hundreds of times over many hours would not be an overstatement. The #1 mistake I have seen of ppl soldering is wiping a tip clean and putting in holder. This isn't like "clean before you put it away" things - oxidation attacks metal, heat accelerates oxidation, a wiped-clean tip has no buffer of sacrificial solder to protect it as it bakes in the holder.
Another tip tip, use the biggest wedge you can manage versus super fine tips, finer tips go through more thermal shock when soldering, and erode faster than fatter tips - and finer tips don't transfer heat as well. I recall fighting Weller fine tips in my earlier days that just seemed to like to burn. On the Hakko, I'm using a small wedge I turn on edge when I need to work in a tight area, still like new.
Upon the recommendation of my friend, I am using 500 degrees F with a 60/40 resin core solder. If that does not work for you, then you can easily work the temperature up in 50 degree increments until you are satisfied with the results of your soldering. Understand that several factors affect the heat you use. One is the gauge and type of solder you are using. Second is the type of circuity you are soldering as there may be temperature limits you need to adhere to so as to not over heat your project.
The metal sponge provides for a quick and easy way to clean the tip. A regular sponge is also provided. Between the two, all options are covered. The length of the cord between the base and the actual soldering iron is quite adequate. The separate base for holding the iron when not in use, is heavy and sturdy as well which provides a secure and steady mount for the soldering iron.
I feel comfortable in following my friend's lead in highly recommending the Hakiko solder station to others.
These irons and 1/8" tiplets served me very well for many years. The only problem was that the tiplet would eventually break and need replacement. They are threaded but it is impossible to get the old one out unless you drill it out. Too much work so I just bought a new heating element and put in a new tiplet. My tiplet broke and I decided to search the internet. Perhaps someone had by now figured out a way to replace the tiplet without drilling.
No luck, but I kept seeing replies that essentially said "toss your Unger and get a Hakko soldering station". If you've looked at soldering stations, you will see that prices are all over the place with some too expensive for a simple hobbyist like me. I think you could find something for less but then I don't know if it would be as well rated.
So, I purchased this unit. I really don't need precise temperature calibration so I just set the dial in the "middle". The reason that I like temperature regulation is that the the iron heats up extremely fast, about 15 seconds to melt solder. I'm so old that I can't afford to wait 3 to 5 minutes just to solder one joint. Temperature regulation also ensures that the iron won't cool off if you have several joints to solder.
I also like the very small handle and very flexible cord. The smaller handle gives you better control when you have to very accurately position the tip. It wasn't clear which tip the unit came with so I ordered a D16 chisel point separately. I was afraid it would come with a pencil tip which I don't like because it's sometimes hard to put enough heat into the joint. It did come with the small chisel tip I prefer so I should have waited to order the extra tip. The two tips will outlast me, I'm sure.
Lastly, the base unit comes with a sponge and a metal "cleaning wire" which looks like a cross between a Brillo pad and a wad of metal shavings. This seems to work pretty well. I've always just used paper napkins to remove excess solder and "clean" the tip. This is not a perfect process as sometimes solder goes places where you wish it wouldn't. Like, I have a solder-splash shaped "tatoo" on one foot.
The quality of this unit looks very good on the outside. There is an article online which shows how to modify this unit so that the light on front indicates "ON" as well as "Tip Heating". As it is, the light only shows when the tip is heating so one might be concerned about leaving the unit on because there isn't an "ON" light. I won't make this mod because I'm very careful about leaving stuff powered. The point here is that the article gave me a chance to see what the guts of the base unit looked like and it also looks to be of high quality.
Soldering is not that hard, but there is a learning curve. I would recommend this unit to beginners as well as experienced solderers because it just makes it more easier to make precision joints where connections are closely spaced and parts are more heat sensitive. If you're just soldering railroad track together, you don't need this. For IC and microprocessor work, this unit will save you time by not having to rework "cold" or bridged joints.
