Hellmann’s mayonnaise has been on our family’s table since before I was born. It’s seems there are an increasing number of brands, some familiar and some unknown, that are trying to get their product on store shelves. I’ve tried most of them and they range from barely tolerable to truly terrible. I know taste is subjective and I’m used to what I grew up with but look at the label, most look like a chemistry experiment. Hellmann’s is and always has been simple and pure.MAYO FACTSI am stating these facts according to what others have said, there is no way to prove or disprove their validity.1. Hellmann’s mayo used to taste better. Everyone says how much better things were in the good old days but this one has been confirmed by the manufacturer themselves, well not that it tastes worse now but they did have a change of formula a few years ago and a lot of people aren’t too happy about it. You can get the old formula, its known as extra heavy mayonnaise here at this online store but it is only available in huge 1 gallon jars.2. Hellmann’s tastes better than Best Foods mayo. For whatever reason the company markets supposedly the same product as one brand east of the Mississippi and the other brand west of it. I live west of it and the only brand I can buy in the supermarket is Best Foods. I have tasted them side by side and I am convinced (as many other people are) that Hellmann’s tastes better. So I find ways, like with this batch. to buy it through mail order. Yes it costs a little more that way but with inflation driving the price of this stuff to ridiculous heights it’s too close to call.WAS THIS A GOOD PURCHASEI purposely bought the small 15 ounce jars, which most supers no longer sell rather than the more common 30 ounce size. The larger size takes up too much room in my fridge and once mayo is opened ideally it should be used within a few weeks and my family simply does not go through that much of it, so by a month or so it is tasting not so fresh anymore. Doing careful price comparisons the two jar set I’m reviewing has one of the lowest cost per ounce. The one downside is I have no idea how long it’s been sitting in blazing hot warehouses or vans. The expiration date though is a reasonable January ’24, I think.YES NO MAYBEBased on all of the above this size combination is about the best overall and the product itself earns it the full five star treatment. But on the other hand there are two glaring issues. One is that someone put a big white sticker over the important info data on the label including the expiration date. That is unacceptable and earns zero points. The other is that the manufacturer themselves is culpable for making their date code not consumer friendly, The code should be easy for anyone to understand and it purposely is written in such a way that you have to guess what the actual date is, which earns another zero points. All for an average of only three stars.

MAYO FACTS

I am stating these facts according to what others have said, there is no way to prove or disprove their validity.

1. Hellmann’s mayo used to taste better. Everyone says how much better things were in the good old days but this one has been confirmed by the manufacturer themselves, well not that it tastes worse now but they did have a change of formula a few years ago and a lot of people aren’t too happy about it.
