Purchase options and add-ons

Late one winter night a little girl and her father go owling. The trees stand still as statues and the world is silent as a dream. Whoo-whoo-whoo, the father calls to the mysterious nighttime bird.

But there is no answer.

Wordlessly the two companions walk along, for when you go owling you don't need words. You don't need anything but hope. Sometimes there isn't an owl, but sometimes there is.

Distinguished author Jane Yolen has created a gentle, poetic story that lovingly depicts the special companionship of a young child and her father as well as humankind's close relationship to the natural world. Wonderfully complemented by John Schoenherr's soft, exquisite watercolor illustrations, this is a verbal and visual treasure, perfect for reading around and sharing at bedtime.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Among the greatest charms of children is their ability to view a simple activity as a magical adventure. Such as a walk in the woods late at night. Jane Yolen captures this wonderment in a book whose charm rises from its simplicity. "It was late one winter night, long past my bedtime, when Pa and I went owling." The two walked through the woods with nothing but hope and each other in a journey that will fascinate many a child. John Schoenherr's illustrations help bring richness to the countryside adventure. The book won the 1988 Caldecott Medal.

From Publishers Weekly

A girl and her father go owling on a moonlit winter night near the farm where they live. Bundled tight in wool clothes, they trudge through snow "whiter than the milk in a cereal bowl"; here and there, hidden in ink-blue shadows, a fox, raccoon, fieldmouse and deer watch them pass. An air of expectancy builds as Pa imitates the Great Horned Owl's call once without answer, then again. From out of the darkness "an echo/ came threading its way/ through the trees." Schoenherr's watercolor washes depict a New England few readers see: the bold stare of a nocturnal owl, a bird's-eye view of a farmhouse. In harmony with the art, the melodious text brings to life an unusual countryside adventure. Ages 2-6.

Fantastic children's book!! My son loves it when I make the owl sound
My son really loves it when I read him this book, while I read it to him, I say out loud the owl hoot sound, he just goes crazy over that! It keeps kids really into the book I'd say. This picture I took of the book doesn't do the book justice, it's just my lighting on this old smart phone. Bought this book for him for his birthday, and the book isn't too long of a read which i like too

My grandchildren ages 5 & 7 love this book. Well written and beautiful illustrations. I bought this book in the 1980's for my children. I recently bought it @ Amazon for my 3 year old granddaughter. Beautiful story of owling on a wintry night.

This is the most wonderful, heartwarming, kind and gentle book!! I had this when my son was growing up and read it aloud to him countless times. I got as much delight from this as he did and we both always looked forward to story hour each night and this is the book that was most requested by both of us. My son is now 26 and when he was moving he had stored the box containing all his old children's books on a back porch at his cousin's house which sadly was stolen by some jerk when he left it outside for an hour or so while going to the store. I sent this to him for Christmas figuring he should at least have one kids book in his house and was he ever delighted to receive this. He was so very happy to have this again and he said that it was the very best Christmas gift he had ever received. I can't recommend this terrific book highly enough and for those of you who are parents of smaller kids get this by all means and read it out loud to your children. You will all just fall in love with it. A wonderful, wonderful, wonderful book!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars The most amazing children's book I've ever seen
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 13, 2021
This is by far the most amazing children's book I've ever seen. Our daughter LOVES it and asks us to read it to her constantly. Such a beautiful story and drawings. She was just under 2.5 when we started reading it to her and it was PERFECT for her even then (despite it being really quite advanced language).

I used this book to help the children to quiet down, because the child in the book explains how special it is to go into woods but you have to be quiet (even when you're a bit cold).
