Product Description
Sleep like camp royalty with the ultra luxurious Therm-a-Rest MondoKing 3D Self-Inflating Foam Camping Mattress. With couples in mind, the pad can be paired with a second MondoKing for a double sleeping pad. The pad offers an R-value of 8.0 for maximum year-round comfort thanks to thick thermal foam and StrataCore construction, which uses a continuous layer of thermal foam nestled between alternating ridges of air and foam (R-value measures the material’s ability to insulate; the higher the R-value, the warmer the sleeping pad). Perfect for car camping, expedition basecamps, RVs, and boats, it also makes an excellent guest bed at home. The stable mattress offers maximum stability, cushioning, and protection from rocks, roots, and uneven ground surfaces. All styles have dual valves that allow compressible foam core to expand and inflate when unpacked, and all styles mate perfectly with other Therm-a-Rest MondoKing mattresses with a similar style. Available in three styles: Equipped with the Standard Valve with the 2018 or 2019 model, or equipped with the TwinLock Valve the sleeping pad has dedicated "in" and "out" valves to make inflating and deflating the pad easier than ever. Standard Valve models are 4.0 inches thick inflated and include a stuff sack, and TwinLock Valve models are 4.5 inches thick inflated and include a stuff sack that can also be used as a pump sack (for easier, breath-free pad inflation). Made in the USA. Manufacturer’s limited lifetime warranty.

I bought it to use with my queen size sleeping bag. Being brand new, it will not self inflate much. You have to blow into it. Once you leave it inflated for a few days, it should self inflate to about 80% capacity. You have to fill the other 20% yourself. This is the way it works. Don't expect 100% self inflation on any self inflating mattress.
I still have 2 other Thermarest I've had for 20 years and they still work just fine. That is a testament to Thermarest quality.
I did do some research and saw those cheaper Chinese self inflating mattresses. As temping as their prices are, you can't put a price on quality when you are camping for a few weeks and you have a leak. Thermarest is made in the GOOD OLD USA BABY!!!! Cry once (twice for me) on price and be happy for many years.
You should also know that when you store any self inflating mattress, you should leave it inflated with the valve open. Do not store it compressed with valve closed.
The best way to get roll these big Thermarest is to leave the valve open, roll it up. Then close the valve. If it fits in the stuff bag, then good. If not, unroll it without opening the valve. Try rolling it tighter. Make sure you have your valve closed. When you have about 2 feet from the end, you will have to open the valve to let the air out. Keep a tight roll til the end. Close the valve. Yes people. It take a little effort. if you don't want to put in a little effort, sleep on the ground or bring a 4" memory foam mattress as your base. Just a pain in the butt for space if you ask me.
I will write an update once I use it during summer camping in Eastern Sierra Nevada.
I am a travel photographer and I lived in my van as I drove all over North America from the Arctic Circle in Alaska to Key West Florida. I tip the scales at 268 pounds so I needed some thing that was not only comfortable but that could withstand that kind of weight every night. The foam/air combination is really the best of both worlds. This is not an air mattress for hiking due to the size and weight, but it is perfect for car camping or tent camping as long as you can drive to your campsite.
After 2 1/2 years on the road I settled down again, got an apartment, and continued to sleep on this mattress for another year before my cat accidentally got her claws into it. I was so glad they still made them so I ordered up another one and it is just as comfortable as the first one. I did try the new and improved version, but after a couple nights I decided I didn’t like it as well as the original, so I returned it and got the dark blue version again.
Therm-A-Rest has always been a quality brand and this model is well-made, durable and comfortable.
I highly recommend it, but if you get one and use it the way I did driving around a lot just remember to leave one of the valves open so that if you change elevation the expanding air can get out. You wouldn’t want to inflate it at sea level and then drive over an 11,000 foot pass in the mountains or something like that.
My second main problem with this mattress was that it was extremely difficult to deflate. I bought it to take on a trip where I would have to set up a new camp every night. This mattress makes me cringe at the thought of trying to forcibly deflate it every morning and try to stuff it back in its sack. I've been debating if it was worth it, or if I should go with a different mattress for my trip.
That said, if you are looking for a comfortable bed, you won't find anything better than this.
I'm 6ft 3in tall and 185lbs, and I bought the 80in x 30in mattress to sleep on a wood floor in my house, and it's really comfortable. I don't even notice I'm sleeping on what is effectively a memory foam mattress. I'm a tall guy, and I'm glad I bought the larger version of this mattress, because there is comfort in knowing you can roll around without falling off, plus if you're spooning your partner you can fit them too.
The durability of this is great, as I've mentioned I sleep on this every night, it is my bed. After about two weeks the air-valves do need to be opened up to allow the mattress to reinflate itself, because as it slowly loses air and becomes less firm, the mattress is more likely to move around and deform when you sit/lay on it.
The only con I can think about with respect to this product, has more to do with how I use it than how %99 of buyers will be using it... Because I use it every night, I do have to open/close the air-valves every two weeks to reinflate the mattress, and these valves are potential failure points in the very-long-term. However, I have a trick when opening and closing them, I grip the back end with one hand, and unscrew the other end with my other hand: this reduces tensile stress on the fabric, which will prevent wear and greatly increase the lifespan on the mattress.
I recommend this product, but I don't think it's an "every night sleeping mattress" which is how I'm currently using it, as I tend to toss a lot while I sleep, and honestly I probably need a queen size bed to really sleep well.
