FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
1. Why Normal recording is limited to a minute video? - The First reason behind the 1-minute file is that we want to keep file transfer bearable for our users over Wi-Fi and Cloud. At the 25Mbps bitrate, one minute of recording is about 187MB. Even at 5GHz Wi-Fi transfer, it would take a while to download the original file to the phone. Another reason for keeping the files short is that if there was a failure during the file writing process of the dashcam to SD card, then the damage is minimized to just a minute file.
2. What are the Parking mode options? - Region-Based Motion DetectionMotion & Impact Detection Parking Mode detects both: Motions recorded by the image sensor (marked [P] in the file list). Impacts detected by the accelerometer/G-sensor (marked [E] in the file list). Choose detection regions to reduce the risk of triggering unwanted motion recordings due to trees swaying in the wind, far-away moving objects, etc. Time Lapse +Buffered EventsContinuously records at 1FPS (one frame per second). Videos are played back at 30FPS. 1-minute Time-lapse Parking Mode video = 30 minutes real-time coverage. Cover more than 27 hours on a single 16GB microSD card at the highest (Extreme) quality setting. When an impact is detected, the dashcam creates a buffered Event video. Please note that you need your dashcam to be hardwired or using a Battery pack in able to use the parking mode,
3. How to avoid disconnection from Wi-Fi? - For a smooth Wi-Fi connection of your smartphone to the BlackVue direct Wi-Fi, the distance between the dashcam and the smartphone should not be more than 10m (32ft). The radio interference due to other electronic devices in the car can affect the Wi-Fi connectivity of the dashcam, and it might randomly disconnect from the smartphone. To troubleshoot this issue, turn off all other electronic devices and try to connect again or take out the dashcam from the mount and power it up at home using a power adapter and try to connect your smartphone to its Wi-Fi. For Android Users: Before connecting any Android device to the dashcam, make sure to turn off the [Smart Network Switch] option in the Wi-Fi settings of the smartphone. BlackVue acts as a Wi-Fi server for your phone or tablet, but it does not provide a connection to the Internet, so the [Smart Network Switch] function might cause it to disconnect from BlackVue. For devices with Android OS 6.0 onwards, turning on the location in the application permissions might solve the connectivity issue (go to Settings -> Apps (or Applications) -> Application manager -> BlackVue -> Permissions -> Location, choose [Allow])
For iPhone Users: Before connecting your iPhone to the dashcam, make sure that the [Wi-Fi Assist] option is turned off (Go to Settings > Cellular. Then scroll down and tap the slider to turn off Wi-Fi Assist).

You can tell that most of the dash cams are "commodity" based technology, meaning they are just copies of other dash cams with a different name or label. Also, if a dash cam vendor doesnt have a website to provide firmware, move along... DO NOT BUY IT
Like I said, I had a few dash cams and I was just getting pissed off everytime I would look at my dash cam not recording ... so I did my research and wanted something reliable. I didnt want my family to get into an accident and not have a commodity based dash cam not working.
I found this one ... you can tell this product was designed by people that used and installed a dash cam. The connections are grouped on the side and not the top or in some place that makes it difficult to remove or connect.
The cables are good quality and not some super cheap old technology mini-usb trash connectors that break off.
The app and the firmware just show you this is a good product.
You can buy a cheap dash cam... but you have to ask yourself... will that bite you when you are in an accident and you find out it didnt record or was such garbage, it wasnt even working and you didnt know it? now imagine if that footage showed it wasnt your fault ... it is worth the extra coin ... believe me...
The first dashcam with a 32GB SD card had firmware issues. After doing a hardware installation in the first car following every instruction to the letter I had nothing but issues. I changed the settings to turn down and off the sensitivity of the accelerometer and the picture resolution to no avail. I tried changing many of the firmware settings on the camera and using the laptop and nothing would change. While driving, changing lanes or hitting an overpass transition on the freeway caused the dashcam to register everything as an event which quickly filled the 32GB card with bogus events in about 10 minutes of driving so there was no room for normal driving recording. I purchased a 256GB top of the line Samsung SD card to try and get more capacity. Technically the dashcam says it only supports a Blackvue SD card but since the friend that referred me to the Blackvue has Samsung in both of his cameras and the Blackvue SD card is 5x the price of the Samsung I gave it a try. The dashcam bricked the 256GB SD card. When inserting in the dashcam the SD card was put into read only mode permanently making it usable. Yes, I tried everything including DOS low level commands on my laptop to turn off the read only and nothing worked. Amazon took that SD card back and I bought a second Samsung. I first plugged the 2nd SD card it into my laptop and saved some files to it, then erased it to make sure everything was good with the card before plugging into the dashcam. After everything worked well I put it into the dash cam and the camera bricked that SD card as well.
I sent the 2nd SD card back to Amazon and sent the dashcam and the 32GB Blackvue SD card back to the seller under warranty for replacement since it had to have a firmware issue. They sent me another dashcam (new serial number) but did not send back my 32GB Blackvue SD card. I had a 200GB Sandisk and purchased another 256GB Samsung SD card for the new unit. The new dashcam would not format either SD card. There is no way I am going to throw good money after bad by buying an overpriced $189 256GB Blackvue SD card after already wasting over $350 on this Blackview dashcam.
Terrible experience and the warranty has now expired so you are taking your chances if you purchase this supposed premium dashcam.
The only minor gripe I have is that the collision detection is too sensitive for my Jeep. I had to turn it all the way down because it was marking almost every clip as a collision event. Even with it at the minimum setting (not off), I still get normal driving clips marked as collision events.
I didn't think the WiFi would be that useful when I bought it, but I really like being able to connect to it while my wife drives and pull clips live. It sure beats having to pull the SDHC card to download clips.
Top reviews from other countries
Running the cables for this dashcam was pretty easy in our RAV 4 once we knew the location of all the airbags. This is actually very important! While it would likely not be too much of an issue to have a non-fixed cable crossing an airbag, why risk it? There was more than enough cable for the rear camera to go around our A pillar so that we could completely avoid the airbags, then still route through the car trim to the back window. Similarly, there is a lot of cable for the 12V outlet cable; in fact, it was too much for our setup and we had to stash it behind some trim on the passenger side. The included cable clips are nice for managing the cable routing, and are not too noticeable. Depending on the surface you’re sticking them to, however, we had one that didn’t want to stick.
Similarly, installing the cameras is super easy. The included adhesive (same for both front and back cameras) does need to be stuck to a warm surface, so installing this camera in the Canadian winter meant we had to leave the windshield defrost on for a few minutes before the mount stuck. Once it was on though, it stayed stuck on and doesn’t move. When positioning the camera, it’s important to ensure that there is enough clearance to remove the camera from the mount if needed, as it slides out one side and this distance is important to consider.
The quality of the video the cameras produce is about what I was expecting. Both record properly in Full HD, and the front camera at the elevated 60 FPS rate. The 60 FPS is great, as it does help when trying to get a clear view of signs or license plates as there is less blur. I sort of wish that I had gotten the 4K version, as this would help even more, but in general the FHD resolution is sufficient. Both cameras produce their own separate video files on the micro SD card, so if you want a combined view you’ll need to piece them together yourself. Additionally, at the default (highest) recording quality, the clip length is limited to 1 minute before a new file is started. These files do have a bit of overlap, so to combine them you’ll need to trim the start of each subsequent clip to match the end of the previous. Again, this isn’t a big deal and is good as it ensures nothing gets lost when the recording file changes.
Feature-wise, there are quite a few configuration options in the camera’s firmware. These can be set via the camera’s app and built-in WiFi, or by inserting the memory card into a computer and using their viewer desktop app. The built-in WiFi is quite slow to transfer files, so if you need to pull more than 2 or 3 clips, you’re much better off taking the micro SD card and transferring directly from there (I picked-up an adapter for my phone to be able to do this on the go). Depending on the firmware version you’re using, connecting via the Blackvue app can be cumbersome and throw a few error messages before it finally works. This can be frustrating, but it doesn’t cripple the overall system. I also found that the default G-Sensor settings are way too sensitive and trigger event clips when driving normally. There are some additional settings, such as the information which is shown on the bottom of the videos, which are nice to be able to configure based on your own preferences (for example, I do not have my speed shown).
The camera embeds GPS data (speed and position) in each video file, and this data can be seen in the Blackvue desktop app. I’m not sure how this data is stored, but it would be nice to be able to extract it myself without the need of their app. One big caveat with this storage method is that some video players and editors (such as Davinci Resolve) do not seem to like this embedded data, and may crash or not play the video. Running the video files through a converter (such as the one in VLC or the Windows Video Editor) removes this data and makes the files usable.
Additionally, again depending on the firmware version, the G-Sensor settings may not work properly. On the latest version (as of Feb. 20, 2022), the parking mode settings apply to normal mode as well. This is a pain and not clear, but thankfully the Blackvue support team was able to suggest using just the parking mode settings as a fix for now. We’ll see if their next update resolves this issue, and I will update this review if so.
Overall, this is a great dashcam. The video quality is good and there are many convenient features which you can configure. We’ll see how the camera holds up over time, but so far it’s looking pretty good. I would recommend this dashcam if you’re looking for a 2-camera system with 60 FPS forward recording!
