Her community is set on a mountaintop where the poor, hardworking families live and down in the valley live the wealthy and privileged. Mallie works for one of these families cleaning their home and has to finish before the last train leaves for the mountaintop because to walk home, she would have to go through the forest where monsters live.
Yes, this is a fantasy story about a world where the air is filled with dust, the forest is full of monsters and the Guardians rule the land making young boys go work in the coal mines. This is where Mallie has to step up because her family owes a large amount of money to the Guardians and no way to pay it back. The Guardians have threatened the family that they will take Mallie’s little brother and make him work in the coal mine if their debts are not paid. They give the family a week deadline.
Mallie decides to save the family by going on a dangerous mission disguised as a boy to,earn the money. Here she learns the true meaning of grit and perseverance. Also, she learns to fly!
Come sail away with Mallie to find the truth behind her dust filled world. Does she have what it takes to save her family?
A wonderful story of how young children can make a difference in the world. Geared towards a young audience, all readers will want to finish the story to find out if Mallie is strong enough to save her family.
Audience: Young boys and girls will enjoy the story

Born with only one full arm, Mallie Ramble, like other girls in Coal Top, works as a housekeeper for a wealthy family, the Tumbrels. The family depends on Mallie’s income to survive. Her father, a former miner Down Below, is blind and unable to speak due to the dust he inhaled while mining. The Dust engulfs the area in which they live; Guardians govern the people and formulate all the rules of living. When the Head Guardian, Mortimer Good, invites boys to participate in an adventure riding Starbirds for which they can earn five thousand featherweights, Mallie is determined to participate. Disguised as a boy, Mallie attracts one of the flying horses immediately. When Honor Tumbrel “outs” Mallie, Mortimer Good changes the rules and allows Mallie to participate. As the story develops, Mallie learns that she is more courageous than she thought; she is able to overcome obstacles through determination and with the help of others.
“Over the Moon” succeeds on multiple levels. The setting provides a picture of what may happen should countries not protect the environment. The dangers of a totalitarian government, ruled by an elite class, highlight the importance of every citizen, regardless of social station. The story shows young readers that everyone has a purpose and everyone is able to succeed in some endeavor. It depicts individuals rising above their different physical challenges – Mallie’s lack of a full arm, Iggy’s stature; Mr. Ramble’s sightlessness – to succeed. It emphasizes the importance of family and the nobility of self-sacrifice. Nevertheless, Natalie Lloyd never becomes maudlin or didactic as she makes her points. The story is a magic journey into an fantasy world where good triumphs over evil and right trumps might.
Twelve-year-old Mallie is the sole breadwinner for her family. Her father went blind and dumb after an accident in the mines. The mining company claims that her father caused the accident which also destroyed machinery, so their family is denied disability (sounds like no disability insurance exists and no workman's comp either) but they're being hounded to pay the mine. The mining company is threatening to take MIllie's younger brother to have him work in the mines. Millie must come up with a ridiculous sum of money to save her brother from the mines.
Millie hears about a dangerous competition which was organized for orphan boys. Millie has one good arm and is smaller than most of the competitors but this doesn't keep her from giving her all and proving that she has the courage and mind to excel. For the first time ever, it seems possible that Millie will be able to make enough money to protect her little brother. Millie undertakes risky journeys to bring back gold dust and a rare mineral. She flies through dangerous Dust and faces down monsters and shady politicians. Millie is a compelling heroine and she wins us over with her courage and loyalty.
Natalie Lloyd delivers a magical adventure that will appeal to young girls and boys.
