On February 6, five of the train carriages containing VC were in danger of exploding, but the US EPA managed to safely burn and discharge the chemicals into the air. Although no injuries were reported, numerous locals have reported feeling ill and having headaches, and environmental activists has advised the community to record any health issues and report any dying animals or fish. Two Pennsylvanians have also filed a federal complaint against the rail operator, Norfolk Southern, for medical exams and other associated services for those residing within 30 miles of the disaster.
The book also examines the broader implications of our use of hazardous chemicals and the need for stronger safety regulations and practices. The US EPA and OSHA have put in place restrictions to limit exposure to VC, but accidents can still happen, highlighting the need for rigorously adhering to laws and taking the right safety precautions.
